A few years ago my family went to WDW over Mother's Day, and the love bugs were out in full force then. We noticed quite a few at the AKL pool, but didn't really notice them anywhere else.

We were at WDW the last 2 May's. Mothers Day week both times. The love bugs were out, but it wasn't anything terrible. They didn't bother us.

We went in May 08 (2nd week) and while we saw them, They did not bother us (or anyone) else in any way. We mostly just saw them flying around one on top of the other. They fly pretty slow and do not bite or sting. I didn't notice them at the pool any more than any where else. They couldn't have been that bad as we have May of 09 booked! Hope that helps.

I've been wanting to get this correction out so might as well do it here. It's lovebug - all one word. A lovebug isn't a bug. It's a fly. Only true bugs have the "bug" as a separate word. There. Now I feel better.

Two major lovebug flights occur each year, first in late spring, then again in late summer. The spring flight occurs during late April and May, the summer during late August and September. Flights extend over periods of four to five weeks.

And yes, lovebugs do have a purpose. The larvae feed on the dead vegetation within the thatch of a grassy area. That releases the nutrients and also thins the thatch so grass pests don't have cover.

Feel bad for the guys. After mating, the male dies and is dragged around by the female and she herself only lives 3 or 4 days.

These are the exact dates I will be staying in 09. I am curious how were the crowds and weather during your visit?

You know on 2 hours of sleep I actually thought the ME driver was talking about Herbie when he mentioned lovebugs.

We were there in early May this year and we barely noticed any however in October of LAST year (2007) there were tons and at that point they were starting to decrease.

BUT, we just came back from a late Oct. trip this year and didn't see one! Every year they change in intensity. On average though Sept. is "usually" the worst month for them, some years they're bad and some years they're not so bad. I think it has to do with how cold the winters are which has an impact on their breeding for that following year.

I tried to send you a PM last night, but it said I didn't have enough posts to send it. So, here goes.... We absolutely LOVED our May trip. We felt the crowds were not as bad as June, the temps are warm but not uncomfortable, plus we only had 2 brief little rain showers. It rained half the time on our first trip in June. The last half of May would definitely be my favorite time of year to go, I'm just hoping we can again this year, and not have to move our dates to June.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. :)

    Hi all,
I've been going at the end of April to WDW world for a few years now and have friends in Orlando who keep me updated about them during the Spring and Fall. During my last April 08 trip which was the 3rd week of April the love bugs were just starting to pop their heads up then so I didn't see too many of them. However, in October 08 during the 3rd week, I didn't see a one.

I hear that when the weather is dry they tend to stay low in numbers so only time will tell how badly they will reapppear in the spring. I don't have a problem with them so much as they guts they leave behind in a splatter or how I hate when they fly into your mouth on a roller coaster ride, etc.

Our first trip was end of April beginning of May two years ago and last year was mid May after Mothers Day before Memorial Day weekend. Both times were great as far as crowds, I think last year was definately hotter and more rain, nothing substancial but I don't remember even a sprinkle the first year. As far as the "lovebugs" I don't remember them either year :confused3 not sure what I am missing but really didn't bother us because we are going again this May 09:cool1:
