I know the magic is going under a rigorous 5 week make over. Does anyone know what is going to be done to the ship during its dry dock?

    Everything!!! :rotfl2:

Disney generally does not actually announce what they are doing until just before the dry dock, or never. But generally one can expect, Scraping and repainting the hull, new carpets, new linens, the usual stuff, and then this is when they can do the big stuff as well, like repainting much of the superstructure, or replacing the soundproofing in the WDT(They may have just done this three years ago), possibly new seats in the WDT. New light fixtures, updated sound systems, heavy maintenance to the engines and motors. Installing new features, like the virtual portholes or interactive game floors. At this point, they could do just about anything. pirate:

I haven't heard, but if DCL follows the lead of Carnival, Celebrity, and RCI, they'll be bringing some of the Dream class features to her. I suppose it's also possible that they could stretch her, but I don't think that's likely.

Five weeks is a pretty long time for dry dock especially if there aren't any known mechanical issues which we'd know from missed ports, cancelled sailings, etc. thus, my guess would be cosmetic in addition to maybe magic portholes, revamping of AP, addition of interactive artwork, and perhaps the BB Botique.

It's really anyone's guess and I'm curious to hear others' thoughts.

We found it interesting on our last Fantasy cruise that each CM who talked to us about it "knew" what was happening in their area. We were told that Topsiders is being remodeled into something similar to Cabanas. Our stateroom host told us that all the cabins were being totally gutted and re-done.
All public areas will be cleaned, repainted, recarpeted, etc. New seats in the theaters. Of course, all of this must be considered rumor...but it is what CMs told us.

And what will for sure happen is all the engine inspection and work that is required.

The biggest rumor is that there might be a WBTA added when they have all the dry dock info completed!

Now, as to the original post--5 week? Are you sure? I've also heard 6 week, but then I haven't whipped out a calendar to count days. This is WAY more than cosmetic. There are 5 or 6 weeks empty between the last Med cruise and the date that she's due in Madeira and Gibraltar!

The Magic's vacation is scheduled for September 7(after dropping people off in Barcelona) to October 20 (when she will be in Miami) this is 43 nights of work and travel from Barcelona to Venice and Venice to Miami. My guess is that they will not have a WBTA so they can keep working and testing things on the journey to Miami. But 43 nights is a long time for a ship to be out of service. Can't wait to see what they do! pirate:

From what I have been told there will not be a WBTA due to Disney wanting to make sure all the changes are completed for the first cruise on October 20. I am booked on the October 20 cruise, so I guess I will see first hand. Not that I have anything to compare it to since I have never been on the magic.

According to the Interior Designers of the Dream and Fantasy - they are also doing the Interior Design of the Magic Refit 2013 and Wonder Refit 2014.

    http://www.tillbergdesign.com/about/ (look under References Marine)

[Unfortunately, no photos or concept designs shown.]

If Disney is going with the same interior designers than I definitely could see them using best practices from the larger ships and making them work for the Magic & Wonder.

If this is true and the Wonder is getting the refit in 2014, it would make sense for the Wonder to be in Europe in 2014.

Carnival is doing a 49 day $155 million refit to the Destiny, adding a deck even, and then renaming the ship The Sunshine next year, so if the Magic is out for 43 days I would expect some big changes.

My kids say if the Magic had an aqua duck it would be a perfect ship, but I can't see that being added.

She has scheduled docking dates in Madeira and Gibraltar. There are rumors flying as to where the dry dock is scheduled....we've heard 2 different places in Italy and one in Spain. I don't know what is accurate.

The Tillberg Design web site goes along with what we've heard about the guest cabins......

Thanks for info. I'm slowly getting the hang of acronyms, but I hadn't seen that one before.

We got off the Wonder 6-14-13. While aboard, I asked about the 2013 and 2014 DCL schedule, specifically the possibility of a WBTA. According to Pierre and Lisa, officers in the hotel services end of the cruise line, a lot depends on the decisions being made at an excutive meeting that was being held the week we were aboard. Apparently there was a meeting of the highest Disney executives, chaired by Robert Iger, to decide business directions, including the budget and overall business plan for the Magic. That would determine the scope of the drydocking for the ship. So while they could not tell me anything in part due to confidentiality directives it was in large part because a lot is yet undecided. They did say that Magic would be drydocked in Spain, not Germany nor Italy.

Have you been on the Magic before. I haven't so I won't have anything to compare it to. I really don't like cruises but my family out voted me. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that we selected a decent cabin for our trip.

I heard from a CM on our cruise last Jan that they were going to gut deck 9 and completely redo it. I don't know if this is true or not, but we'll see.

That goes along with redoing the Buffet and I could see them making the quick service locations like the new ships, though I liked them the way they were. But I don't see them being able to do much with the pools... And the spa could be getting a makeover as well... Makes perfect sense to say that deck 9 is getting an "extreme makeover"... haha Walt Disney Company puns! pirate:

Do ya'll think there is any chance they will add a concierge lounge? Does anyone know when they announce what is being done?

Nope. I've only been on one cruise ever. It was a 3 nighter on the Big Red Boat for our honeymoon. I will always remember it. It was the year the Magic launched too. We were at the dock and we first saw our ship and thought it was so big. Then we saw the Magic next to it and were all :scared1: at the size of it. Funny how times change. Now the Magic is a small ship.

Anyway, this has always been my dream vacation so I am super excited for it. We were originally going to go on the Fantasy, but this ended up being cheaper, even with concierge. Plus it goes to Castaway Cay twice and from all my reading, I am really excited to go there. I just wish it wasn't a year away!

I can't wait to find out what they will do in dry dock. Why don't you like cruises?

BTW, I am very worried about my daughter (she will be 19). She gets sick even on the ferry boat at MK.

I don't like hanging out on a boat. I rather stay on an island and explore it. Also, too many people in a confined space. The best cruise that I ever went on was a Windjammer and there were 126 people on the boat, including the crew.

We booked a 1 bedroom concierge cabin. So hopefully, that will give us plenty of room. I really don't like small rooms.

My dd who will be 10 when we go, get motion sick on car rides, so she will probably wear her seabands if she needs them.

Sounds like we have a lot in common. :goodvibes We booked a suite as well for the space. The more I have researched, I am actually glad we are on the Magic. I do like technology so would have likes the Fantasy's gadgets. But I really don't like crowds. And my 6 year old doesn't do well with them either. I think he will prefer the kid areas on the smaller ships. If we had gone on the Fantasu we wouldn't have gotten a suite. Plus I can have a shot at a cabana this way.
