Love is “Universal”: Our Awesome Anniversary Adventures in Orlando (May 2015 TR)

That breakfast looked gorgeous!!

We love extra legroom seats too......makes such a difference on a flight.........glad it was uneventful, long as you get there safe I suppose.

We've been lucky with our rentals so far, worst was last year's that just wasn't perfect....few scratches and the infamous chocolate milk carton. But glad yours was decent.........

Waiting for next chapter.........:D

Oh I hope you liked Sweet Tomatoes. We love it and whir in LA last year drove out of our way to find a location

We loved it! Enough that I think it may be an arrival day tradition :) (when we're not travelling with the kiddo, that is....I don't think it would impress him as much as it did us).

That breakfast at the hotel looked yummy. I wish my kitchen would magically have all of that stuff laid out for me every morning!

GAH teenagers! That's so funny. At least it wasn't a super long flight I guess :)

Aw, they were okay on the flight. Their youthful exuberance was endearing, in a way. None of them were rude or anything, just .... so .... talkative :hyper2: .

Well the plan at the moment is that we land about 3pm on 11th, so straight to Bonnet Creek to drop our bags then head to DTD to buy his lego birthday present (we are all big lego fans). Then in the morning we will go to Toojays for birthday breakfast and then a Disney waterpark. Infact we might do something we have never done before and go to Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach on the same day. We have tickets for 5 water parks (if you include DC) but we love them. Also might go bowling as Henry loves that and then birthday meal in Longhornes. A perfect day.

Sounds soooo fun! What a special day you have planned!

We love the waterparks, too. I'm almost considering adding one into our October plans. Aquatica maybe, or we still have yet to try Wet 'n Wild.

Off to a great start! I love love love Sweet Tomatoes.

:thumbsup2

I'm late to the party, but it's clearly well worth coming! Haven't even seen a billboard yet and I am loving it!! ;)

Maria :upsidedow

Hi Maria! Thanks for joining in! :goodvibes

A good quick arrival at Orlando.

I have changed allegiance this year and gone to Alamo from Dollar (last time we had to swap our allotted car as it had a few dints on it), but honestly it was just based on price and like you found Dollar efficient at the airport if using Express.

As glad as I am to hear you enjoying the weather and not the humidity, it is my first time in 10 years that we are going in July and the humidity is the one thing I am not looking forward to. As previously discussed, the hair doesn't fare that well!

I'm actually really glad that our Dollar rental worked out well. Its nice having a fall-back company if Alamo rates are too high.
popcorn::Subscribing! We leave in 2 weeks, so I'll be anxiously awaiting your updates!!! :yay:

Two weeks!! That's awesome!! The last couple of weeks just fly by.....your travel dates will be here before you know it.

Welcome to the thread :goodvibes . I hope you enjoy the posts!

A couple of days into our vacation, I went to open the passenger door to exit the car when we got back to the villa after a day at the parks, and Steve says to me.....what's that on the door? I held it open so I could look, and the whole corner section of the bottom right of the inside of the car door was covered in what looked like exploded liquid (perhaps a can of Coke? or something similar). They must have completely missed that section of the door panel when they detailed it after the last renters. We had already had a bottle of water roll out from under my seat on the first day (not ours, also must have been from a previous rental occupant).......so after we noted the spatter on the door, I said to Steve.....if you smell something funny, check for a chocolate milk container!!

Then I had to tell him your story :rotfl:. He thought it was pretty gross  .

Friday, May 1st…. part 2

I always love the drive from the airport. Once we’re off the plane and coasting away in the rental, it’s just such a wonderful feeling. We’re here. And a whole, wonderful week of fun and relaxation is spread before us, just waiting to be enjoyed. Any anxiety or stress just melts away in the seat of that car as we get closer and closer to Lake Buena Vista.

Since it was still so early in the day, we decided to eat before attempting to check into our villa. Breakfast had long since worn off (remember we had a super early start) and we didn’t eat too many snacks on the plane, so we were starting to get rather peckish. We knew we wanted to give Sweet Tomatoes a try, and the most logical location to visit was located in the Crossroads, just a stone’s throw away from the Vistana.

The Crossroads is a big area, with a lot of different places all crammed in quite densely. It took us a few minutes to find Sweet Tomatoes, but it turned out to be right next to the Pirates Cove Mini Golf that we visited as a family last August. I guess we never saw it then as we visited after dark.

Upon entering, the Sweet Tomatoes mascot was greeting guests just inside the front doors. It wasn’t super busy, but yet it wasn’t super quiet, either. Steve asked if I wanted a photo with the mascot (he knows how much I love those crazy kinds of photo ops) but we were kind of bewildered at that particular moment so I took a pass. Right inside the doors was the cold salad portion of the buffet, with the cashier at the far end. We assumed we must have come in the wrong set of doors, and were just about to exit and go around to the other doors when a very friendly staff member approached us and explained that we could fill our plates on the cold buffet, pay the cashier and grab our cutlery and drink glasses, then seat ourselves and partake from the hot buffet as well. Following his instruction’s that’s exactly what we did. I had signed us up before travelling for the Sweet Tomato’s email club and had a variety of coupons from which to choose (though we didn’t receive the buy one, get one free introductory coupon that many people speak of when signing up….perhaps they have discontinued it?). I think the best deal ended up being 20% off our entire order (including beverages) so our total bill, including tax, came to $19.79. Very reasonable.

Steve, a self-described salad aficionado, adored the cold salad bar……he raved about the freshness of the ingredients and the variety of options presented. We were also both super, super impressed at the cleanliness of the entire establishment. While many buffets suffer from the Messy Guest Syndrome, the staff were working their buns off to keep all of the areas spotless and their efforts did not go unnoticed.

Not a big salad girl myself (hence my brown plate at Cracker Barrel, lol!) I was eager to check out the hot entrée stations…..everything smelled so yummy. I loved the fact that their bowls were fairly tiny (though not so little that they were useless) so it was easy to try just small bits of the different soups and chili’s without having to use an enormous bowl for a small amount. I really enjoyed everything I tried, though if I could toss out some constructive criticism, the pasta could have been hotter.

Everything was well labelled, and the food itself was very flavourful. We were impressed.

Since we ate so healthily for lunch, we couldn’t muster the willpower to bypass the delicious looking desserts (and hey….why would we want to, anyway?). The ice cream sundae bar was a big hit, and the brownie bites were warm and sooo fresh. Two thumbs up all around.

We sat and chatted for a bit (there were lots of open tables, so we weren’t delaying any other diners from being able to partake in their meals) before finally deciding it was late enough to try checking into the Vistana. The mascot was once again stationed inside the entrance door (he had taken a short break for a bit while we had been eating) so I took Steve up on his offer to take a pic…..my first “character meet” of the trip!

We hopped into the car and drove the short distance to the Vistana. Within just a scant few moments, we were parked outside the front of the Sheraton Vistana Resort Welcome Center.

You know that feeling you get when you revisit someplace you have been before, and a whole swirl of fond memories and moments come rushing back that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy from toes to nose? That’s the feeling I get every time we pull onto Vistana property. It’s so beautiful and tranquil, so familiar and comforting, it really does feel like we’re coming “home” every time we return. I cannot tell you how much I love this place .

We wasted no time in getting inside, as we were eager to see the extensive renovations that were completed during the fourth quarter of 2014 to the Welcome Center. We had viewed the artist’s rendering of the finished product before the project ever commenced and the proposed changes were very exciting. They literally started the refresh and upgrades the week after we checked out at the end of August, and the work didn’t finish until the New Year (I am pretty sure Christmas was their initial target completion date, but I don’t think they were able to complete it by then).

We walked inside, and were VERY impressed by the new décor: it’s warm, inviting, casual and so pretty. It has a very modern, clean appearance that doesn’t sacrifice a comfortable feel for the contemporary look. I think Starwood nailed it ::yes::.

Gone are the long, endless counters where multiple agents worked to check in incoming guests. Those counters have been replaced by individual stand-alone kiosks for a more personal approach, and the new layout worked very well. While we had received an email suggesting the Diamond Lane office might be reopened by our arrival date (it has been closed since the renos and refresh commenced…..due to a re-allocation of space, maybe?) that wasn’t the case, but nevertheless we were greeted immediately and taken to one of the new kiosks to obtain our resort map, towel cards, and room keys. I was elated to learn that they had been able to fulfill every one of our advance room requests, despite them being fairly specific: a one bedroom premium unit in Lakes, top floor, and as close to the Fountains pool as possible. They even placed us in a Saturday building to ensure each request was met, despite the fact that we had a Friday check-in and Friday check-out. Steve was super relieved that we were granted a premium unit (900+ square feet with a full kitchen and balcony) versus the standard one bedroom (400-ish square feet) which does not have a balcony and features just a small kitchenette on the opposite side of the living area. Our Skyacution confirmation left the door open for being assigned to either villa type (specifying only that it would be a one bedroom villa…..so both were possibilities), but being used to a 2 bedroom villa…..the small one bedrooms would have felt tight.

We were escorted to the sales desk, picked up our welcome package (coupons, magazines, etc.), declined the offer for sales meeting (they had upped the ante since our last visit in August…..$100 cash + light sabres and ticket discounts from last August’s $75 + extras) and were off to get settled in to our villa in short order. A very pleasant experience overall: the sales folk were not aggressive and easily took no for our answer.

We were in the room before 1 pm……a full 3 hours before the regular check-in time .

A tour of our villa is next.

I am sitting here eating my "Last-Minute-I-Should-Eat-Something-For-Dinner-But-Have-Not-Gone-Grocery-Shopping-In-Two-Weeks" of spaghetti thrown together at the last minute.

And now I wish I were eating at Sweet Tomatoes. I LOOVE that place! I always leave feeling soo stuffed; but with delicious, healthy food! Also, I never knew they had a mascot.

The world has changed; hasn't it. I have actually heard teenagers ask why telephones have hashtags on them; when hashtags didn't used to exist. :scared: (that being said; I've been told that I'm good at hashtagging....haha!)

I still have no idea where Vistana is; I should look that up sometime....

Loving the report so far! :thumbsup2

Glad you enjoyed Sweet Tomatoes. I'm like you, I don't eat the salad, but I love the soups. And the ice cream. :D

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I drive by the Vistana every day on my way to and from work. (And always feel bad for the people who have rooms adjacent to I-4!) :)

Love salad but don't really eat soups or pasta, so this place has never been on our radar really. But glad you enjoyed it and felt it was clean......so important.

Nice you got into your accommodation nice and early.........I have seen the vistana many times, does look nice so far.......:)

The Vistana is just around the corner from Downtown Disney (they're only 3.2 miles apart). Its also just off the I4, so we find it very convenient to go almost anywhere from SVR.....when the I4 is moving, of course! lol

Glad you enjoyed Sweet Tomatoes. I'm like you, I don't eat the salad, but I love the soups. And the ice cream. :D

Oh, their ice cream was soooo good. ::yes::

I always request to be in a villa that doesn't border the I4 or the 535.....I wouldn't want to listen to that road noise for the duration of my vacation. We own in the Fountains, so we generally don't have any chance of getting one of those poorly located villas anyway, however...I always note it, just in case!

Do you like chili, schumi? They had two different types.......the one I had was delish!....the other looked a little strong for my liking (very dark colour...I wasn't brave enough to give it a try). Their homemade focaccia breads were the perfect accompaniment. I could have happily filled up on those two items alone.

Nice start to the vacation. That was not the sweet tomatoes we last went to. I love the ice cream on top of the warm brownie. For that alone, the place was ok. I don't remember if we got buy 1 free, but I think I did get that with our first visit. I assume they stopped that great coupon for signing up now. I signed up several years ago, even though we only visit one on vacation in Orlando.

Ahh, got my air reservations today. More than I wanted, but at least I have them now. Done. All in place now. Just have to wait until the end of December. And, to make sure we do not have any time at the end of the summer this year, DD's school soccer starts up at the beginning of August and games start at the end of August. Oh well. She gets to play on her birthday this year, and well, as a teen girl, it becomes a running whine. Not my fault. LOL

So this is where you've been hiding. There's a PTR too???? I feel left out....you don't love me anymore.

So things are off to a good start. I may have to ride your coat tails and enjoy this TR as my summer vacay. I'm not sure that I can take one this year....there are so many things happening that there is hardly any free time plus, we may need to replace our roof which we though we had at least 2 more years with. Bummer!

I'm totally shocked that you have never been to Sweet Tomatoes. We go at least once if not twice or more every trip. We went 2 nights in a row in March.

The kids and I love Cracker Barrel but Hubs isn't a fan. We don't eat there often, but certainly enjoy it when we do! And their store is really nice. They have such a great variety of things there..

Never tried Sweet Tomatoes. We noticed one when we were in Orlando. It was near the Target. Is it just a buffet or is there a menu as well? Might be on our wish list for next time!

Looking forward to reading more, Gina!! :)

I too enjoyed Sweet Tomatoes, we are signing up to the email club for a voucher. Last time we did get BoGOF even though we didn't have a coupon (the cashier took pity on us ;)) but I won't count on that happening again!

Didn't realise there was such a big difference in the 1br units. We stayed a few years ago now in a 2br at the Vistana Village resort and that was nice. :goodvibes

Hate chilli Gina..........love chilli`s however......or jalapenos to most folks.

Got a funny look off a waitress years ago on our first trip when I asked if I could have extra chillies over my salad.....she said did I want a cup of chilli......long story short.....we worked out I meant jalapenos. Would have been a messy salad otherwise........:crazy2:

But chilli is a food I never liked despite loving hot and spicy anything!!!

We did look in Sweet Tomatoes, one at top of IDrive......but got sidelined by the Brazillian steakhouse further along........meat and lots of it.........:D

Woohoo for the airfare purchase!! Its always a relief....despite the price  ... when that aspect of the vacation is taken care of.

Well, may I say Carey.....its about freakin' time you showed up!! Here I thought you had written me off :scratchin. I always enjoy your sarcastic wit :p .... you give my reports the little kick they need to keep 'em interesting :rotfl: . Your presence on my PTR was sorely missed.

Its just a buffet.....all healthy and fresh though. The absolute opposite of Golden Corral!

I am surprised your hubby doesn't enjoy Cracker Barrel. With all that "down home cooking", it always seemed to me like it would hold a HUGE appeal to men!

I too enjoyed Sweet Tomatoes, we are signing up to the email club for a voucher. Last time we did get BoGOF even though we didn't have a coupon (the cashier took pity on us ;)) but I won't count on that happening again!

Yup, the difference between the standard one bedroom and the premiums is HUGE. I could probably have lived without the extra space, but I would have been gutted to not have a balcony.

Strangely enough, I hate hot and spicy anything!! But we also often refer to jalapenos as chili peppers here in Canada. You would get along well with my Jake....he's a spicy lover, big time. The hotter, the better!!

Friday, May 1st…. part 3

Being assigned to the Lakes Village meant this was our first time at the Vistana in a building with an elevator. It was strange (nicely so) not to have to haul our luggage up the stairs on arrival.

For anyone who is interested, the layout of our specific villa can be seen here:

https://www.starwoodvacationnetwork.com/villa-collection/sheraton-vistana-resort/villas#floorplan-12

And here is what it looked like in person:

Building exterior:

Entryway, as you walk into the unit:

Foyer, as seen walking back toward the entry door (the laundry facilities are behind the double doors to the immediate left of the entry door):

Kitchen:

Living/dining rooms:

Bedroom:

Bathroom:

Dressing areas (the first located outside of the bathroom, the second located outside the master bedroom):

Balcony:

We had a lovely view of the Lakes pool from our balcony, as well as a part of the pond which lies immediately adjacent to it (sorry for the effect of the screen :().

The Lakes pool is not one of the three of seven that are open late (it closes at 10 pm versus 1 am) so we did not find it noisy while we were trying to sleep. It was also pretty sparsely inhabited for most of the week…..we would often look out and exclaim “there isn’t even anyone in the pool!”.

This is our building from the pool side….our villa was the top floor, the balcony to the far left of this picture:

Since we were much further ahead of schedule at this point than we had anticipated, we took the opportunity to unpack the suitcases and get settled in before heading to Universal to activate our annual passes and Photoconnect AP. Originally, we figured we’d just dump everything and head to the parks for a bit and worry about settling in later that evening, but we sure hadn’t expected to have access to the villa right after lunch. So, we put our clothes in the dresser drawers and hung the hangables in the closet, set out our personal toiletries (since we had two separate dressing areas, we each got one to ourselves), locked our cash/car keys/passports/other valuables in the safe, and bounced out the door en route to our first taste of park time. The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing, the birds were chirping…..and we were thirsting for our first Butterbeer since 2012! :drinking1

Up next: we’re on a mission to meet the Minions! :hyper:

This might be an “adults” vacation, but let’s be honest….we’re really just big kids at heart.

Wahoo! Time for the Dark Side. My favorite is entering the City Walk and then the parks. Not a butterbeer fan, but will share one with DS.

Stay calm...we're only on page 3. I had to let things marinate at little before stirring the pot:stir:

For the record....I was watching on the Orlando hotel board but 'someone' didn't turn up and decided to go on the Universal board instead. It never occurred to me to look elsewhere:charac2:

You don't like Butterbeer?!? :scared1: Have you tried the ice cream, or just the drinks?

We still haven't had the hot. Maybe in October or December, just so we can say we tried 'em all.

Hmmmmm......maybe its time for a shameless plug on the Orlando hotel board, then?

At any rate, I'm glad you're here :teeth: . Now I can start working on wearing you down to join us in October. Who needs a new roof, anyway? Just put out some buckets when it rains  .

:rotfl2: I was just looking on the SW site at airfare for October. You're a really bad influence. I'm totally wasting my day off....so far, I've spent half of it online.

It's not that I don't like butter beer, it's just that it's sweet, and while I like butterscotch, it's not my favorite, so sharing is my go to. Not sure I'd like it hot. Did not try the ice cream either. Went for the other flavors and yummm. I rarely turn down ice cream! LOL

To help narrow your scope.....October 10th to the 17th. Just sayin' :rolleyes1 .

We're even flying out of Buffalo for that trip. We could meet for dinner the night before :hyper2: ,

I'm betting you would LOVE the ice cream. Its divine, and sooooo smooth. Put it on your to-try list for the next trip (whenever that happens to be!).
