So….we’re back . As always in the immediate days that follow our return from the sunny south, I can hardly believe it’s over. Months of preparation, research, planning and excitement all came together into 9 days of fun, sun, and memories. And despite a wrinkle in the plans here and there, it was simply marvellous: every last single second.

For those of you who didn’t check out my pre-trip report, and want to do so before you read the rest of the entries here, you can find that PTR here:

http://www.disboards.com/threads/pt...-2-muggles-celebrate-in-diagon-alley.3372361/

For those that just want a quick summary of the basics before I begin, I’ll give you the Coles Notes version too (though fair warning, I'm generally not very good at being brief ):

We are Gina (41) and Steve (43), and this was a couple’s trip to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary on May 1st. This was us then:

And here we are now:

(well, that isn’t exactly us “now”….that pic was taken last Christmas during our “Howl-iday” at Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls :santa: …. but close enough!)

We have one son, our beloved Jake, who turned 19 this past January:

(don’t let the Tough Guy pose mislead you….that kid is as soft-hearted and sweet as they come...just don't tell him I said that :ssst: 'cause he would consider me totally uncool....one has to keep up appearances, you know)

He had just finished his first year of college in April and opted to stay home so he could grab as many shifts as possible while he has the opportunity to stock pile some cash (he’s a very financially savvy young man….he may look, and act, like his daddy, but he has the budget-mindness of his momma). Jake also wanted us to have the chance to enjoy some special time together since the vacation marked a notable occasion for us. I’m not going to lie: it was weird, and not very easy, to leave him behind. But I knew he was more than capable, and had a good support network (my Mom, his girlfriend’s family, and our fabulous neighbours all vowed to make sure he was well cared for in the event of any emergency that he felt he couldn’t handle), so the planning for two went full steam ahead.

With strategies in place for multiple trips to Orlando within the next year, we purchased Premier Annual Passes for both of us: it made sense to go all out with the most expensive passes as they came with a Halloween Horror Night ticket for each of us (we are travelling again in October…..couples trip #2!) and free Express after 4 pm, among other benefits (8 free bottles of water per person, free preferred or valet parking, dining and shopping discounts, etc.). We are owners at Sheraton Vistana Resort and would be staying there again for this trip, though not with our timeshare weeks: those are reserved for October and Christmas. After comparing pricing at Cabana Bay and the onsite Universal resorts, we snagged a great deal via Skyauction on a one bedroom villa at SVR, being mindful of the budget considering we have three vacations planned for 2015 alone. Did I mention I have a tendency to be a bit budget conscious?

Our culinary mission for this trip was to try as many new places as possible….when not travelling with the (somewhat finicky and less adventurous) kiddo, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. From an attractions perspective, we wanted to conquer as much of Universal as we could manage, but in a way that we really took the time to enjoy the parks. We’re definitely not the commando type, so you won’t read about us running from one ride or show to another, trampling anyone at rope drop, or following a printed touring plan to maximize every second of every day. We had a list of special items we wanted to eat and drink, from Butterbeer and cauldron cakes to a Flaming Moe and a Clogger Burger, and a pretty generous schedule……other than pre-booked tickets for the Orlando Eye, the balance of the week was pretty much ours. Crowds were projected to be reasonably low, so we had high hopes (coupled with managed expectations).

We pre-purchased the Photoconnect annual pass (for those who are unfamiliar with that product, its like Universal’s version of Memory Maker/Photopass), plus I was armed with our own two cameras, and as a result…..we ended up with a lot of photos. A LOT . Like, more than 1000. If somewhere along the way I start overdoing it on the pictures in this report, someone please speak up and say so. I can sometimes go a little overboard in my enthusiasm! :hyper: I have a significant amount of uploading to Photobucket and resizing to do before posting, but hopefully that won’t slow me down too, too much.

My big Steve had lost 41 pounds since January after we committed to a healthier lifestyle for 2015 and beyond, but the diet and exercise plans were put on hold for this vacation. We would eat what we wanted, when we wanted, and undo the damage once we got home. We hoped that the vast amount of walking and swimming we would be doing would counterbalance at least a smidgen of our indulgences, but now that we’re home and I’ve looked at some of the photos, I really am not so sure. There will be a lot of food porn in this report: you may want to adjust your waistbands now :rolleyes1 .

We were scheduled to depart from Syracuse, New York on Friday, May 1st as the sun rose. Being from Canada, that meant we had a bit of a road trip to kick off our vacation, so we embarked on our grand adventure under sunny skies on the afternoon Thursday, April 30th. That’s where we’ll begin…..in the next post.

To anyone who stops in to read along: welcome aboard! Whatever you do, don’t be shy: feel free to add your comments, ask questions, or offer up your suggestions-for-next-time. With another trip just 150 days in the future, I’m all for learning what to do better on the next round :thumbsup2.

So pull up a chair, get comfy, grab a Butterbeer (okay, make it a Coke Zero and use your imagination! :drinking1), and join in. Let’s have some fun with this :goodvibes .

Thursday, April 30th:

We set the alarm for 6 am so we could be up, bright and early, to tackle the must-do’s before we headed out the door. Jake was off to work right after breakfast for his 8:30 am shift at the Y, so I gave him my teary hugs and he beat a path for the door. Mom was emotional, and I think he was a bit, too. He’s got a real sensitive side, especially where his family is concerned.

With just the two of us left in the house, we embarked on a thorough cleaning and laundry blitz. Steve questioned my logic in ensuring the house was spotless when we departed, considering Jake was going to be home alone all week (not that he’s dirty….but let’s face it, his cleaning standards are not on the same level as mine), and while I agreed with him in theory, I still needed to get things in order before we left. One of my (many) manias, I guess. Steve and I divided and conquered (I put the big guy on vacuuming duty.....I figure its kind of like a power tool, right?), and as a result, we had the house shining like a new penny, the laundry completely washed, dried and put away, and luggage loaded before noon. That set a new record for us :thumbsup2.

With all of our tasks taken care of, we saw no reason to stick around and watch the minutes pass on the clock. We drove to our local Tim Hortons for lunch, and enjoyed a quiet meal together before hopping in the Journey and hitting the road. Fresh coffees in hand, we were set to roll.

The drive to Syracuse is relatively uneventful. There are no major metropolises between home and our destination, so it’s very rare that we encounter traffic aside from any wait at the border. That’s really the only big unknown. We pulled up at the toll bridge:

paid the fee, and it was over the 1000 Islands bridge and onward to the border stop.

Happily, there was virtually no wait when we pulled up to the border crossing….there were only a couple of cars ahead of us. The gate agent went through the standard questions (where are you going, how long will you be there, where are you staying, etc.) and we were quickly allowed to pass through. My boss, two days later, was not so lucky. Full vehicle and luggage search. Oye vey :guilty:.

The rest of the journey, from the border to Syracuse, is the longest and most boring of the entire road trip (it’s just a long drive through a whole lot of nothin’) but we were excited and happy, and the weather was sparkly and bright, so it wasn’t too tough to bear.

We arrived at our castle for the evening, the Holiday Inn Express Syracuse Airport, shortly after 3 pm.

We had stayed at this property before, but not for several years…..it always seemed to come in at a much higher cost than the sister property, the Candlewood Suites, across the parking lot. Plus, the Candlewood offers suites with separate bedrooms where the HIE does not….an important sanity-saving feature when travelling with a snoring husband and a teenaged boy. Considering we did not need that separate sleeping area this trip with just the two of us, and thanks to the Friends & Family discount rate that I was able to secure through the generosity of a fellow Diser (thank you Rupert Puppenstein!) our park and fly costs on a king room at the HIE came in about the same as it would have at the Candlewood, and for a much lovelier room.

The Holiday Inn Express is physically a nicer property than the Candlewood. It’s newer and a little “classier”, offers an indoor pool, and provides a free hot breakfast. It’s also smoke-free….while the Candlewood is not. I prefer the staff at the Candlewood Suites to the Holiday Inn Express (they are much, much friendlier) but I could overlook that for such a short stay.

I had ordered some clothes online in advance of our trip (brands we like that we can’t get here at home), and had them delivered to the hotel. They were all waiting for us at check-in, and handed to me by the front desk staff without even having to inquire if there were packages waiting.

We checked into our room and stretched out for a bit, indulging in a rest after being cooped up in the Journey for such a long stretch. Our second floor room was right as you stepped off the elevator, and offered a king bed, flat screen TV, desk and chair, mini fridge, microwave, and full bathroom.

They had Bath & Body Works products in the bathroom....gotta give them high marks for that:

Not fancy digs, by any stretch, but more than adequate for our one night stay. And heck, with a 4:30 wake up call, it hardly even counted as a full night to begin with!!

We listened to the Universal podcast together (the excitement was mounting!) and then headed out in search of dinner. Cracker Barrel in neighbouring Cicero, NY would be our first mammoth American meal of this vacation.

Am I really the first one here!? Can't wait to read about your trip report! (I am especially excited to hear...or read....about The Eye).

Also, as a side note; for either (or both) of your upcoming visits; I just this past weekend did "Escapology" with my boyfriend. They will allow 2-6 people in a room at a time. It was pretty awesome. Right now they have 3 different "rooms" you can do; who knows how many they'll have come December. Anyway, perhaps it might be something to look into; and they have had some good groupon deals lately, too. Check it out here: http://orlando.escapology.com/

Wahoo, you started! Great pictures already. Funny, we have a Cracker Barrel not far from us, and never go there. Hope you had a nice meal.

Subbing..........

Joining...have enjoyed following your planning (a welcome distraction from my own planning) and not a Fast Pass reservation in sight. Now that's got to be good!

Fantastic start Gina........:thumbsup2

More pictures the better....don't worry about that!! You can really see Steve has lost a lot of weight.....he must feel great with that!

Looking forward to reading along with you.......::yes::

Yay! Found your new report!

Off to a good start.

Love that Thousand Islands Bridge, so pretty. I'm always fascinated with those lucky people who have those houses on those tiny islands, seemingly all to themselves.

Welcome, chiamarie! :goodvibes

Yes....we are seriously considering an Escapology Groupon for October! Good to hear the positive feedback from you first. We thought it might be a fun way to kill time before heading to the airport on departure day. Those final few hours are always hard to fill.

Welcome, Lynne! It was a lovely dinner at Cracker Barrel....and so inexpensive. I am glad we don't have one near our house or I may never cook :rotfl: .

third on a match......

Yay! mac's here! Welcome aboard! :)

Ah.....it was marvellous having an open schedule with no firm commitments. No meals reserved, no rides reserved, and park days even negotiable. We loved it!

Glad to have you along for the TR :thumbsup2 . I hope you enjoy it!

Booking my place Gina :thumbsup2

Thank you, schumi! Glad to have you here! :sunny:

We were back to our regular workouts and swimming last night at the Y. All that indulgence on vacation has made its mark....time to get back to normal (so we can indulge again in October, lol!).

Yes! I love your trip reports

Thank you! Welcome aboard! :flower1:

Hey there, my friend, good to see you! :)

Those folks with cottages on the island are super lucky in the late spring/summer/early fall, but winter on the water would be killer. I'm sure most of them are summer properties anyway, but for the price they would pay.....I'd want to be in them year round!

I'm here! So excited to read your report. I always learn so much from you~

Glad to have you reading along :goodvibes . Welcome!

Can't wait to read all about it, Gina!!

Hey there mrsabbott, thanks for joining in! Haven't seen you around the board as much lately, so its nice you have dropped by to read along. Hope you and all those beautiful kiddos are doing well!

Looking forward to your trip report, Gina! :)

Thank you, nancipants! So happy you are joining in for the ride :thumbsup2 .

I am just working on the next installment now. Hope to have it up soon. :surfweb:

Thursday, April 30th….continued

The drive to Cracker Barrel isn’t a lengthy one (maybe 10 minutes, tops, from the hotel) but the traffic between the two scares the crap out of me. The I81 is pretty tame until you hit Syracuse, then the big city driving mentality seems to kick in. I am always glad that Steve does all the driving (by choice). I think I closed my eyes more than once! Thankfully, going back to the hotel was less busy and far less treacherous than the way there. Driving around in the large US centers always reminds me how slow life is in our small Canadian city.

Cracker Barrel had a lot more cars in the parking lot than they did diners in the dining room. Lots of folks milling about the store, but no so patrons many enjoying dinner just yet. That meant we were seated quickly and attended to very promptly by a lovely young server, who gave us lots of attention (but not too much) throughout the duration of our meal. Things picked up as our time there wore on, but nothing too crazy. I’m guessing the fact that it was a weekday helped significantly with crowd control.

After a thorough review of the menu (it was really, really hard to pick….so many comfort food options that all appealed to the palates), we placed our orders, drinks were delivered shortly thereafter, and our server brought out a plate of their signature biscuits.

Steve was anticipating a very sharp decline in his willpower as the week progressed, so he opted for a healthier option while he still had the desire to eat right. He opted for a salad, which he said was super fresh:

I’m not a fish lover, so I avoided eye contact with his plate after this picture was taken …. And I’m really not even sure what type of fish it was. Haddock, maybe? Can anyone tell from the shape? I guess I should have asked so I could record it properly. At any rate, he really, REALLY enjoyed the fish….said it was cooked perfectly and had a very nice flavour. Considering it’s something we never cook at home, I’m sure it made it that much more enjoyable.

My entrée was a little less….uh…..sensible.

Everything was piping hot and very tasty. The macaroni and cheese, in particular, was superb….you could tell it was homemade in-house, which was a nice surprise. The meal was a HUGE portion, though, and considering I had already consumed half of one of those dense biscuits, I didn’t even come close to finishing. Steve was happy to assist with my left-overs after he finished his salad and fish.

Too full for dessert, we were brought the check once our plates had been cleared away, and as usual, we were floored by the low cost of dining out in the States. The bill totalled $26 with tax, and that included bottomless non-alcoholic beverages for both of us. It costs over $20 for two of us to eat at McDonald’s at home.

After dinner, we milled about the country store for a bit (they have some really cool stuff in there…..I would have loved to have taken home one of their rocking chairs from their front porch!) then headed back to the hotel. Feeling a tad over-stuffed from dinner, we promptly switched into our swimwear and headed down to the pool.

The pool was exceptionally warm and not very big or deep (the photo makes it look larger than it was, and the “deep end” was a mere 4 feet) but it was better than nothing. We joked that the pool seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis….was it a small very warm pool, or an oversized hot tub without the jets? Regardless, we spent a good hour relaxing and floating and soaking out our cramped up, road trip legs. It was pleasant and quiet and we enjoyed the first taste of our couples times immensely. Yes, it was going to be wonderful to enjoy each other’s company exclusively for the next week.

Having already set up our wake up call for 4:30 am with the front desk, it was lights out for us by 10 pm. I had a quick chat with my mom to let her know we had made it safe and sound, we set the bedside alarm clock as a back up to the wake-up call (didn’t want to risk sleeping past our flight time), and it was off to dreamland.

Okay, well that was plan. Not surprisingly, there wasn’t much sleeping going on. The bed was comfy, the temperature of the room was perfect, the hotel was whisper-quiet, but we were too excited, as usual. Ah well…..we’ll have a chance to nap on the plane once the Gravol kicks in.

Next entry: it’s time to get this show on the road. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 7:50 am … complete with our own squad of cheerleaders .

Who wants muffins??? :cheer2:

MUFFINS!!! WOOT, WOOT, WOOT! :cheer2:

Hi Gina! Your meal looks very "brown." You need some veggies! We have a Cracker Barrel down the road from us. We don't eat there too often, just because we sort of forget it's there, but my kids love to look around the store! We might have to head back there soon...

I love, love Cracker Barrel. I would eat there all the time if I could. The closest one to us is in Binghamton which is about 45 minutes away but my husband isn't a fan. We have eaten at that one in Cicero a few times too. I actually waitressed at one in college and really enjoyed working there too. Fabulous food. The breakfast there is so good too, I always try to stop at one on road trips. I want some right now! Sounds like a great start to your trip!

I love fish!!! That looked lush!

Haven't been to Cracker Barrel since 07.... may go back for a lunch at one point.........do enjoy the shop for candles and such...........

We are exactly the same with loving how cheap it is to eat in the States.........everywhere!!

Looking forward to reading more of your trip......:thumbsup2

Glad to hear your meal and hotel was so good. DS wants to go to Niagara Falls, and then to other Canadian areas, Toronto for one. Kid is always thinking we can just travel. Um, SW will be opening their fares for December shortly, that's the only travel planning I'm doing now.

Love the pictures!

Looking forward to reading your trip report! We're off to Uni for our first trip in just a few more days - so waiting anxiously for more updates :)
