List of Tips for the Disney 1/2 Marathon

    I was hoping we could start a thread of tips for the 1/2 marathon since many of us have never done a marathon before and don't know what to expect or things needed etc. If you know of something please post it hear and we can all get ready for the big event.

    Here are a few I have come across...

    1. Bring throw away clothes to keep warm prior to the start and then discard them on the side of the road. They will be donated to charity. Or you can use a trash bag.

    2. Put something called Glide or vasaline on area that could get blisters or run together to cause irritation.

    It sounds like you're talking about BodyGlide, which I can definitely recommend. You can find it at sports stores, running stores, etc. - and click here for the BodyGlide website.

    After my walk on Wednesday, I definitely see the need for some Body Glide! :o Ouch, ouch, ouch!!

    Don't forget an energy source. I have tried (and don't like) the Power Gels and Gu. Bleck.

    I have tried and like the Clif bars. Black Cherry Almond is my favorite!

    99 cent cheapy cotton gloves for the start. (I will probably get a dark green or black to match my plastic trash bag. ;) :crazy: ) Those too can be discarded without much thought when you get warmer.

    Socks with Coolmax or Dri Fit. These are great!

    Don't start out fast. Do the first couple of miles slower than your goal pace. It's really hard to remember this because the first three miles are so exciting, you just feel like you are floating.

    Aftyer my long walk on Thursday, I definitely plan on having some chap stick on hand for the 1/2. My lips were killing me by the end of my walk.

    Camera! Bringing my camera! I'm a Penguin, what can I say? (As John Bingham so describes me)
    Someone had also suggested one of those space blankets for pre race at least that can be discarded and will be big enough to wrap in as it is supposed to be cold before step off.

    ear covering as my ears always get cold.

    SOMETHING LIME GREEN Really, how are we all planning to ID ourselves?

    I cant tell you how nervous I am about this marathon. I have read so many things we should wear/bring/do, i can;t possibly remember them all! I am totally stressed out about this and just know I will forget everything I need............
    can someone make a MASTER list! lol........
    or I am gonna end up luggin a tote bag with unessasary stuff with me!


    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Maybe we should have a list of running questions/concerns and we can gather all necessary ideas from that about 2 weeks before the marathon- what do you think?

    Let's just start with these 3 questions :

    1) What are you putting in your fanny pack?
    2) what are you going to do for clothing?
    3) What are you doing for food on the walk?

    For me-
    1) My fanny pack is already packed and I am practicing walking with it right now. It holds the following:

    2 water bottles
    tissues
    my inhaler
    chapstick
    walking cd
    cd player hooked onto fanny pack belt
    paper toilet covers
    blister packs
    3 snicker marathon bars cut into bite size pieces for energy renewal.
    and my $1 store gloves for my hands if it's cold

    2) Right now I ma practicing walking in the clothes I think I'll be wearing that morning. It's been difficult to try to figure this out, but I'm getting there. I think I'll wear my gloves, long pants with shorts under, a short sleeved shirt, a long sleeved shirt and a sweat shirt.

    3) There is no food available on the half marathon until the 9th mile. There will be water and gatorade at each mile though. So- if you think you'll need something to refuel with- be sure you pack it in your fanny pack. I'm using snickers marathon bars and will probably pack gummy bears as well.

    kare, you are totally freaking me out!!!!!!!!!!!lol
    and making me feel sooooo unprepared ( which I am)
    the only thing I know for sure is the sneakers I plan on wearing.lol
    that is really good stratagy..........but then again, I am one of those people that pretty much go food shopping at the gas station late sunday night! lol...........
    Ok so the good thing is I dont procastinate the holidays, I am pretty much done shopping ( with the exception of this coming BLACK friday shopping) so i wont be too busy the next month, I am gonna do the same thing you.
    Ill start buying some stuff including a fanny bag which i do not have.............. thanks for the idea.............
    And, yes, I do think we should start a thread with these ideas.those were three really good qestions to start with

    I'm freakin' out too Renee! I just pretend I know alot!!! I read and read and repeat the info I read to others. BUT it has helped me feel better prepared. Don't forget that we're all beginners here and in the same boat!

    For whta you will need in your back pack- I just made a mental note on what I missed while I was walking. Like- my nose was running alot when I walked- so I tought tissues would be good for me- and theyhave turned out to be! The toilet seat cover thigns- I found those at target in their travel size bins. I didn't think about them, but when I saw them I thought- I'd like to ahve those if I needed to use the porta potties durng the race.

    Don't panic! Before you know it, you'll be thinking this way almost always!

    SEE! it never even occured to me that I may have to use the potty during this time! LOL!!!!!!!!!
    Especailly with all the water Ill be drinking.............

    Seriously, break it down for me.whats your plan of attck I mean i know what your bringing but what will you be drinking eating?
    i need to know it all!! lol

    JR.you mentioned vaseline on areas that may get blistered or rub together........
    What about my feet........

    just wondering how that may feel on my feet with socks on?

    Anyone ever do this.whats your thoughts?

    Renee- do you mean what I am eating for breakfast- or on the walk?

    Snickers makes an ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS marathon bar. They're called Snickers Marathon Bars. You can find them for .96 at Walmart. They are in the area that sells SLIM FAST and low carb bars etc. On the bottm shelf last time I saw them. Both kinds are great! I will use 4 of these for the race.
    I will drink only water for the race because I'll get my carbs from the snickers. I'm bringing some gummy bears too. If you want to use something like Gatorade to drink, then you need to start using it now. The idea is that you don't eat/drink/wear or do anything new to your body the day of or a few days before the marathon because you don't know how your body will react to it.
    Anything you think you will do at the marathon you need to start doing NOW. If you're gonna take ics during the marathon- make sure to bring your camera with you when you walk now. Wear the same socks (get some good coolmax walking sock. They're expensive, but will help prevent blisters and are oh so comfortable!), same shoes, same clothes. This way you'll know if you need to apply body glide or vaseline to certain areas to prevent chafing.

    Disney has Powerade at the marathon, so try that now to make sure you can drink it. Make sure you are hydrated before you start.

    Deb&Bill- Thanks for the Powerade tip! WE all appreciate any little tid bit of info we can get!

    You didn't happen to get close to what we WISHWalkers like to call the "Sweeper" did you? That would be the truck that picks up those they think aren't walking fast enough. I'm DEFINETLY a little paranoid about that!!

    Yea who fear.............join me in embracing the SWEEPER. We shall think of it as our friend, who is standing by to help us in our hour of need. Should we stumble, falter or fall it shall rescue us and deliver us to our loved ones at the end of the trail.

    Way to go KareBear, you are so right :)!! Whatever you plan on doing for the actual day--TRY IT OUT before hand and do not try anything new on race day!!!!! They are so stressing that to us in training. Especially that Vaseline or Guide--you want to know how that will feel on a long day before using it on the real day. You won't be able to change your socks during the race ;)

    The other thing--I will not be running my marathon before I run my marathon--translation--20 is our max that we will be doing.

    I wish the marathon was now!!! I can't wait!

    In my fanny pack (still being tweaked--I have until my 20 miler on Dec 11th--so 2 more runs to get it right!):

    Gu Gel Packs--starting at mile 2 and one for every increment of 4 after that and one for the last two miles. I will NOT be eating anything offered on the course. The only provided food I'll consume will be at the finish line.

    Cell Phone--to coordinate with friends in different corrals or other team mates who I can't find but are around my pace and to also call my family in the home stretch to make sure they are where they need to be when I cross the finish line.

    Water bottle--so I don't necessarily have to slow down at every water station. I am only drinking WATER. I tried gatorade on my 16 miler last week--and it just made me super thirsty. I even asked my coach to place out more water. I just can't handle the 'ade type drinks. Perhaps b/c I'm getting the right nutrition from the Gu Gel or something.

    Snack--trying clif bars right now--may just switch to an ordinary cereal bar.

    Still debating a camera!

    Possibly toilet paper--when you gotta go, you gotta go and sometimes you just have to wipe!

    What I am wearing: Ear Muffs!!! My Wrist GPS as my personal motivational tool, running shorts, tech long sleeve shirt and team in training singet--with my number on the singlet, so it doesn't accidentally disappear when I am tossing off my clothes! The layers on top will be determined by what I can find at thrift stores...I have been told when all else fails to use adhesive vel-cro on whatever I buy--so the clothing will become pull away clothing. Trash bag for a wind breaker and blanket for pre-race warmth. I ran today in Atlanta--very very chilly. So I was quite layered up--I am comfortable with running a few miles in layers.

    What I am eating:
    I am still tweaking my breakfast--my tummy started rumbling on my 16 miler last week--hence why I want a snack in my fanny pack. I don't want to eat too much and feel stuffed--but I want to avoid the grumblies. Right now--breakfast is a whole bagel (Thomas' whole wheat) with Earth Balance Spread and a banana. Probably will have a Gu prior to the start--and then again at mile 2 and every 4 miles thereafter. Will probably will do a double-dose of Gu at mile 24 for that quick pick me up in the homestretch.

    Last tip--for those removing pant layers during the race--make sure you can remove clothes without removing your shoes. Since your feet swell while you run or walk--once you take those shoes off, you might not be able to get them back on. That is why I'm looking at the vel-cro approach!

    Start at the front of your corral (or close to it) rather than at the back of the pack. The sweeper clock doesn't start until the last person crosses the start line (to be fair to everyone of course!). It takes a long time for people to get to the start. You can buy precious seconds on your pace by starting further up in your corral. Some have posted seeing last year's results with paces well over regulation pace (I think 17:18 in one case)...this is the reason why.

    This can possibly have you walking faster than a warm up pace--so use your wait time in the parking lot to not only stay warm--but to do your warm up as well (practice at home--don't try new things on race day)..you can do jumping jacks, jog in place, walk around the lot, arm circles, leg lifts--Anything that moves your body. After they herd the crowd to the start--you can use your standing in place doing nothing time--to keep on moving--that way you can start at close to normal race pace (perhaps not quite race pace).

    I discovered at my half marathon yesterday--that I will indeed be using my trusty water bottle. The water on the course was too cold for me and I had to drink it too fast (so I could toss the cup)--even if I walked while doing this. I am using the water stations to fill my bottle as needed and sip whenever I need it instead of chugging the whole thing.
