We're looking at taking either the Jan. 5 or Jan. 12 Fantasy cruise and have two questions:

From a weather perspective, how is the experience. Castaway Cay will be our northernmost port. Will it be warm enough to swim comfortably?

Also, we'd like to snag a VGT room if possible. At what point might these rates be available?

    Thanks!

Depends on where you're from, but as a Floridian, the water temperature at Castaway was ice cold and way too uncomfortable for swimming when I went last mid-January.

The odds of a VGT rate in January are good... Especially for the Dream. Hard to say for the Fantasy, though. It wouldn't surprise me, though.

I thought the water was cold when we were there a couple of years ago in January. It became tolerable, but it took time to acclimate to it. The water temps were definitely more pleasant farther south.

We're from upstate NY, but are not fond of cold water. We were on Castaway Cay in April '08 during a cold streak. (Our entire trip to WDW was cold that year. We weren't able to swim at all during our stay at the resort.) We were able to swim at CC, but the water wasn't as warm as we had hoped.

We've done several January and February cruises, and find that the weather varies a lot. Sometimes it is 80 and sunny during the day and the water is great, but it's hard to forget the time I sat on Castaway covered with every towel and piece of clothing I'd taken to the island before I told myself to quit being a dummy and headed back to the warmth of the Magic.

Good luck, but there is no way to predict the January weather. Our cold one is only one of at least 7 cruises in that the Jan/Feb window.

Thanks to all responders on the weather perspective. Any thoughts on when VGT rates might be released?

The *GT rooms are typically offered shortly after the penalty period for the cruise date selected--about 70 days before the cruise. However, we've seen them released both earlier and later than that, and we've seen them released at least twice (at different cost) on one cruise. The VGT appeared, disappeared (we assumed sold out), and a few weeks later popped up again!

SO....best shot, about 70 days before the cruise.

We were at Castaway Cay last January and the weather was beautiful. I brought wet suits for my teens and they swam all day long. Others felt the water was a little cold, but we are from Chicago. It didn't stop us. We also swam at the Bahamas stop.

First you have to define cold.
The record cold water temperature in the area of Castaway Cay is 73.
If you think 73 is cold, then I guess that's cold. 68 degrees water temperature here is when people start using their pools.

We were on Castaway Cay on January 2. Water was fine, but the air temperature was about the same, so it felt coolish when you got out. It sprinkled a bit. I was amazed how many people went back to the ship after lunch when the sprinkles started. We snorkeled all morning, had lunch, stayed in our bathing suits, rented bikes in our wet swim suits in the sprinkles all afternoon, and were in the last group back on the ship.

We went Jan 3rd in 2010 and it was not warm enough to swim on CC or sunbathe.

We were at Castaway Cay in mid-January almost two years ago and the weather was beautiful - hot and sunny and we went swimming and snorkelling there. It can be cooler that time of the year too though, so we just lucked out and hopefully you will too! :)
