A nice jesture for the people working at the France pavilion.

They are moving the flowers to the back somewhere and some people are not happy about that move.

I can see both sides of it.

On one hand, people want to pay their respects and show their support, with a memorial of flowers.
On the other hand, people go to Disney to forget their troubles. Maybe Disney thinks it's a bad idea to remind guests about what happened in Paris last night.

Let me ask you, is there anything that would have made you for one second forget 9/11?

A unspeakable tragedy has happened, trying to pretend that it hasn't happen imo is insensitive and a little ridiculous.

IMO, acknowledging what has happen and that there is evil out there makes the special times all the more important.

If I were Disney I would be asking all the cm's to wear little "we are Paris" buttons. Some times we have to put rules, regulations, ideas aside. some times we just have to acknowledge that the world is not always "magical" and some things deserve to penetrate the "Disney" bubble.

I'm just not one for sticking my head in the sand and pretending it does not exist. it never works.

Where are they getting the flowers? Is Disney selling them? I can understand how Disney doesnt want to start having memorials of certain attractions but its all so sad and now way too close to us.

I live in New York and was working in the city on 9/11 and thank God I had no lknger worked in 2 Workd Trade. I can tell you flowers or not, even sticking your head in the sand does not help, make it better or forget.

Poor Everyone.

I'm just speculating on Disney's reasons for moving the flowers. :confused3

Personally, I don't need to see a memorial of flowers or wear a button to remember. That doesn't mean I'm sticking my head in the sand and pretending it didn't happen. :confused3

It does seem a little bit strange to leave flowers showing support at a theme park. Perhaps at an embassy or consulate, but a theme park? Seems almost like leaving flowers in front of a French restaurant.

I don't think it's about the sentiment, I think it's about the aesthetics. One of the reasons people love Disney is the consistency of the product, and Disney works hard to cover any distractions in the visuals-chipped paint gets painted pretty quickly, trash gets removed, anything obviously damaged or altered gets moved and repaired. Having all sorts of different flowers, all wrapped differently, all in different stages of wilting, all out in the France Pavillion could be considered a deviation from their brand image. This is an opportunity for Disney to offer something that is Disney-designed, like maybe a huge display of those flame-less candles. That way guests should show their concern for the people of France and Epcot can maintain the control on design. Just a thought.

Those kids who work there are French, and they are far from home. They are not just here to serve pastries. They are here on a cultural exchange program. They must be overwhelmed, poor dears. The French still walk around with the spectre of WWII haunting them. They are very protective of Paris and hold it in very high regard. I think it is entirely appropriate for people to let them know we are thinking about them and we care. We don't live in bubbles.

On another thread about this, it was mentioned that the flowers are going backstage as a private memorial for the French CM's. I like this idea.

Where are people getting these floral tributes? Nowhere on site that I'm aware of. I can see them being moved if they are obstructing traffic flow. Nothing more inspirational than bunches of grocery store flowers that are wilting in the heat and being trampled on/ scattered by the crowds.

As for being supportive of the French CMs, I would think that they might appreciate a few kind words over a pile of dying produce that they have to clean up.

I think that's just lovely. Very kind. Those poor kids. Can you imagine being so far away when there is such chaos at home? It would make me feel very powerless indeed.

As my grandmother always reminded me, it's the thought that counts. They will probably appreciate anything anyone does that expresses concern and support.

I know. I feel for them. I'm sure they'll get many kind words of support today. :goodvibes

Someone recently posted a picture of the collection of flowers, flags, etc that people have brought that have been put backstage. It looks very nice. I understand Disney's reason for not leaving them out in guest areas. Perhaps some of the French CMs don't want to stare at them all day when they're trying to put on a happy face for work, either... just a thought.

I've worked with French expats before. Certainly we discussed tragedies like 9/11 or the 2000 Concorde crash. Certainly there was a discussion of these events and condolences, but flowers would have seemed a bit strange. I know people want to feel like they're doing something, but a kind word can do wonders.

But thats my point, removing flowers so as not to remind guest of real life, if that was the reason is very much pretending.

:sad1:. :sad1:

Have you seen the news reports?? The French are leaving flowers all over the place. can't be that strange to them

Really just a bit callous to me. just my thought. all over the world from Canada to antartica people are leaving flowers and candles publicly, of course only at the mouseworld is it a problem

Disney is a theme park. It's not real life. Maybe they don't want to upset guests. Do you need to see a memorial to know this tragedy happened? Of course not. Nor does anyone else.

Besides, moving the flowers to a backstage area for the French CM's seems both tasteful and thoughtful to me.

Yeah I understand leaving flowers at the site of a tragedy, and in this case it's several sites. However, leaving flowers at some tangentially related business across the ocean seems like a strange gesture.

Oh me too BUT the fact is many guest ARE leaving the flowers so obviously a whole bunch of folks don't think its strange, maybe its a way to commiserate with the french.

Whether or not WE would do it is moot, some one, quite a few someone's are going out of their way to do it and if its enough to make a memorial, then evidently they find it important. Like I said, I just think its in extremely poor taste.
