A man celebrating the Fourth of July died when he tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, Maine State Police say.

Twenty-two-year-old Devon Staples of Calais had been setting off fireworks with friends on Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home, according to Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

He says Staples placed a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off, injuring his head. He died instantly.

What a ridiculously stupid thing to do; alcohol and explosives don't go well together.

Such a senseless loss of a young life; may his family and friends find comfort and strength as they mourn their loss.

That is a horrible thing to happen.....but such a stupid thing to do

Oh, good lord.

I used to work in a hospital; we dreaded the fourth of July because of the horrific injuries we'd get that were a combination of too much booze and too little brains. So many tragedies. People maimed or killed, out of sheer stupidity.

Drugs or alcohol must have been involved. What a horrible thing to happen.
It was alcohol.

It is truly sad, but...what an idiot! If you don't have the sense God gave little green apples, you shouldn't touch fireworks, ESPECIALLY if you are inebriated!

Broader point, there are two kinds of people in this world:
those who can be responsible around motorcycles, fast cars, firearms, EXPLOSIVES, knives, power tools etc.....And those who can't. I don't like when young people die (or suffer permanent consequences) because of a seemingly meaningless stupid stunt but that's the way it goes......

Rest in Peace. Senseless death.

All I keep thinking is did nobody see him and try to stop it from happening?

I would've screamed bloody murder to knock it off his head. Idk, maybe they did and he was too drunk. Maybe the bystanders were all drunk too? Maybe he hid around a corner and came out?

I just can't wrap my head around how this could happen with multiple people all around and not 1 person stopping him from his insane idea.

Another article said all his friends told him not to, they thought the convinced him to stop, then all of a sudden he did it anyway.

Thanks for filling me in. What a shame.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Le Fou once said, "No ones slick as Gaston" but apparently that is not very true in this case. What a tragic situation, but it does show that alcohol can make you do some pretty dumb things. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I feel very sorry for the ones that saw him and the aftermath. How horrific!

From an online source:
The deceased man’s brother, Cody Staples, was only five feet away when the nightmarish scene played out.

“I was the first one who got there. There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there.”
