Sorry for the length of this post, but I feel like I need to get everything out. Also, I’m so excited about the trip that I want to tell everyone every detail, and my wife is sick of hearing about it (more on that further down). From reading this board (especially trip reports) it looks like you guys will eat it up, instead of telling me that you don’t want to hear it.

I live in Southern California, near San Diego, and about an hour and a half from Disneyland. I have been to Disneyland more times than I can count, but I’ve always wanted to go to Disney World. Well, it’s finally happening later this month.

When we first started dating, and until we had our son, my wife and I would to go to Disneyland about twice a year. When our son was about 1 1/2, we went for the weekend, and ended up upgrading to annual passes (The SoCal passes). When those expired, we took 2 years off, and then got annual passes again. When those passes expired, we took another 2 years off.

Because the good SoCal passes are no longer available (no more Sundays), this year we were looking into getting more expensive passes, and we discovered the Premiere pass that was good for both DL and WDW. We kind of joked about getting them and the jokes started getting more serious. I started doing some research and really wanted to go. We didn’t have a big vacation planned for this summer (the last few years we have gone to family reunions, so those were really our “big” vacations), so I started seriously pushing for a WDW trip. My wife was concerned about our son not being old enough to enjoy it (he’s 7, and will be 2 months away from turning 8), but she relented. We got the Premier passes in June (on Father’s day), but had already booked most of the trip before then. Incidentally, we paid for the passes (over $3000 total!) with $50 and $100 Disney cards that we bought from Target at 5% off. That took a while, but the CM was awesome.

Because this may be the only time we ever go (it’s been 42 years in the making for me), I kind of want to do everything. We will be there for 8 days (August 29 – Sep 6) and will be hitting every theme park (not the water parks), with 2 MK days, 2 Epcot days and 1 day each for HS and AK. We’re taking a break day in the middle of the week, to decompress, change hotels, swim, and check out Downtown Disney. What? Change hotels? Yes, we are staying 4 nights at POP, then moving to the Wilderness Lodge. Why? We could have just done a moderate for about the same price, but we really wanted to try a deluxe, and the Wilderness Lodge has the added benefit of being kind of like the Grand Californian for about half the price. (And my son thinks it’s like the lodge in Planes Fire and Rescue, which he loved). And like I said, I want to do everything.

I’ve spent the last few months doing tons of research. We got the Unofficial Guides, subscribed to Touring Plans, have been reading this board a lot (but not posting until today) and watching lots of trip videos (Hi Joe and Ashley!). Needless to say, I’m super excited, and so is my son, but my wife is apprehensive. Every trip we’ve taken, somebody gets sick, usually our son, but sometimes me (and sometimes both). She’s extremely worried about food. She’s a vegetarian and has a hard time finding good food. I eat meat, and our son eats a little, but we both get upset stomachs if we eat too much greasy food. We all get cranky when we are hungry, and I get major headaches if I have not eaten, drank or slept enough. So I can see where she’s coming from. She’s worried that something will go wrong, which will make me upset because I’m building this up in my mind to be the most awesome trip ever.

On the food front, we’ve placed an order with Garden Grocer so we will have fresh fruit, some veggies, and some supplies to make our own breakfasts and a few lunches. We’re not doing the dining plan because we are not huge eaters and out of pocket will definitely cost less. Well, actually, I can be a huge eater when given the opportunity, and the dining plan would probably cause me to gain about 10 pounds and be miserable from eating too much every day. We do have a few dinner ADRs planned, and will be doing counter service for other meals.

As far as planning, I’m stuck between over and under planning. We know what parks we’re going to each day, and have our FP+s picked out. I’ve made a few custom touring plans using the Touring Plans site. We did a few trial runs at Disneyland, and I discovered that rides usually take longer than the app thinks, and stuff ends up being pushed back or missed, which frustrates me, so we will have to take that into account. I definitely don’t want to be the drill sergeant, telling everybody where to be and when, and not have a chance to just take it all in. On the flip side, I don’t want to spend 2 hours in a line that would have been much shorter if we had gone at a different time. My plans only go to early afternoon at this point, so the rest of the day is open (except for night shows and fireworks).

The toughest day to schedule is Hollywood Studios, because there are so many shows that have scheduled times, so fitting everything in is tough. Add on the fact that my son wants to do Jedi Training so we can’t plan that one until we get there and get a show time.

We are planning on making rope drop most days, but that’s going to be a little rough. My son is a super early riser, but I am not. However, I can get myself ready and out the door 10 minutes after rolling out of bed, but it takes my wife and son an hour, even if I try to help. My biggest concern is going to be getting everybody to go to bed and fall asleep at a decent time (especially on the first night with a 3 hour time difference) so we can get up early in the morning.

Because we are Disneyland veterans, but have never been to WDW, this will be an interesting trip for us. From watching videos and reading books I feel like the Magic Kingdom is kind of an alternate universe version of Disneyland where some rides (like Bear Country Jamboree and Peoplemover) were never removed, and other things are different. I think it’s going to be both familiar and different at the same time, which is cool.

Also, somewhat unintentionally, we will be there on my birthday. The week we are going wasn’t our first choice, but my work schedule interfered with our first choice. We will be in Epcot that day, and are having lunch at the Biergarten (where I will probably eat too much and be miserable for the rest of the day. See above). Incidentally we went to DL for my wife’s birthday last week (lunch at Blue Bayou) and are going for our son’s 8th birthday in November (Goofy’s Kitchen for breakfast).

Of course, since we have the Premier passes, we are already talking (not super seriously) about going one more time, (for a slightly shorter trip) before they expire next June.

It’s getting really close now. I can’t believe it’s less than a month away. Our POP MagicBands came yesterday, and our WL bands come on Monday. We also got a set for the annual passes, so we each have 3 bands. My wife has a friend who went recently who thinks it’s weird, be we think it’s really cool that we each have multiple bands.

I’m not looking for advice or anything really, maybe some reassurance, but I just wanted to get it all out there. For everyone who made it this far, thanks for reading. I feel like I rambled a lot there. Feel free to ask me any questions, or tell me what you think.

Sounds like a lot of fun!

I encourage you not to get too caught up in the "do everything" mentality. 8 days is just not enough. On the plus side, you're a DL vet, so you could technically skip many of the rides that are identical and come closer to your dream, but I don't think I could do that, personally. We always like to go on rides we like, regardless of whether or not we've been on another version.

Congrats on your upcoming first WDW trip! It sounds like you have most things accounted for and under control. We did the opposite - went to WDW every year and finally visited DL for the first time this past May after talking about it for 10 years. It IS like visiting an alternate universe, in a good way!

The food at WDW does tend to be a little more on the heavier side than at DL, but you can usually find some healthy snacks, and do be sure to bring in your own to the parks. Since you said you did a lot of research, you probably already know it is a lot hotter and more humid in FL, so afternoon breaks are always a good idea, and drink a lot of water. The heat can wear you out. At least it won't be crowded the time you are visiting. It will probably still be rainy, so make sure to take rain ponchos with you to the parks too.

I also think you'll enjoy both resorts because they are so different. I hope you have time to look around each on your down day. Have a fabulous time!

I really enjoyed reading about your plans and hope you'll consider writing a trip report when you get back. Your family and various concerns remind me of my family in many ways. We also have one vegetarian, some sensitive stomachs, headaches when we're hungry, and we spent my husband's birthday at Epcot. I think my youngest was 7 on our first trip too. Excuse me while I vacation vicariously through you. Have a fantastic time, and have a happy birthday!

You will have a blast! And your son will absolutely love it. We took our kids last year, and they were about the same age. Glad to see how excited you are, I get the same way!!! Have fun, and enjoy your trip.

First, :welcome:. Congrats on coming out of lurkdom :) Second, you're not going to be able to do everything. :D But, you will do a lot and you'll have great fun. Most people who are DL veterans are surprised by the sheer size of WDW.

Sounds like a good idea to have some fruit and veg on hand since your wife is a vegetarian. I'm not, but I cannot swallow meat, so I eat a lot of vegetables and I have to eat soft foods due to disphagia, and I have found that WDW does really try to make you happy when it comes to food and special diets. I'm sure there is a thread on the restaurant boards that has all the great vegetarian places and the best dishes. Also, all the restaurants menus are available on line. I always read every single one, trying to figure out where I will be able to actual find something I can swallow. Lol.

Your idea of planning some things and leaving room to be a little spontaneous is a good one I think. When you have kids you probably need to be flexible and possibly change in the fly, if you have done your research, you will be able to do that. And your child sounds like a great age to be able to appreciate the trip.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Jdismom: We're planning on rain every day. Hopefully it's not too much. It's actually been more humid here than normal this summer, so we keep saying that it's preparing us for the trip. I can't really see us heading back to the hotel every afternoon, just because of the long bus rides, but we will try to take it easy. I've planned for long lunches.

Mrs Eeyore: That's funny that your family is so much like mine. I haven't decided if I'm going to do a full trip report. It seems like a lot of work. Definitely taking lots of pictures and videos though, so maybe I will post something.

Mouse of Mystery: I know in my head we can't do everything, but I don't want to believe it. I made a list of every attraction and show, and we all ranked them with "Must do" "Want to do" "Don't really care" and "Don't want to do". I 'm hoping we can at least do all of the musts and wants. We are skipping a few things that are exactly the same, like TSMM, especially because it's a time-sink, and we will be heading for Jedi sign-ups at rope drop.

That's an easy one.

As soon as you get on the plane, you set your clocks ahead and you start behaving as if you are on eastern time. You don't think about what time it is at home at all.

You can get most of it done if you have a good touring plan. We very rarely wait more than 20 minutes (never more than 30 minutes) for anything.

Congratulations on your first trip to Disney World! :) I definitely agree with not trying to do everything. I went overboard with our last trip because it was DH's first time going to Disney World. I had no idea when we would be back again (Surprise! We're going back in 26 days for our one year anniversary!) and I didn't really make any time for relaxing, be it at the resort or. I told myself not to do and I did it. :sad2: We were there for 11 days, but the first few days were wedding related since we were getting married at Disney World. I'm all about the parks and the rides. DH had a good time, but he definitely would have liked to go to the pool a bit more than a few hours before we had to leave for the airport. This year, since we won't be back for a few years at least and plan on going to DL/D23 Expo in 2017, we're making list of must-dos and making time for relaxing at the pool and doing one park each day with the first couple of days being dedicated to the pool, relaxing at the resort, walking around DTD, and playing mini-golf. I don't want to over plan and make things miserable for the both of us. Since it's going to be hot, we plan on hopping into rides that are air conditioned to cool off when the heat gets to be too much.

I wish you the best of luck! You're going to have a wonderful time! DH and I will be at WL Sept 3-8! :goodvibes

Sounds like you have done enough planning and are ready for a fantastic trip. I hope your family has a great time.
Last year my family went to Disneyland because my dh was sick of WDW. While the two places are alike, they are very different.
Consider taking a mid day break. That will help the family last longer.
I love your post. Keep em coming!!!!!

Seems you have it planned out well. that should be enough days in each park. I also say skip repeats (repeats being stuff currently at DL too). I think DL is actually the one with more older attractions (ones that used to be at WDW)

Congrats on your upcoming trip. I loved reading your post and could just imagine the energy and enthusiasm in your "voice". I went to DL in 1991 so I know how small that park was in comparison to WDW. Probably the most breathtaking moment for you will be walking down main street and standing in front of the castle for the first time. I've been to wdw about 25 times and I still stop and soak it all in at that spot. You are going at a great time with respect to the crowds. That will help you get in as much as you can. We are staying at the WL this trip. Have you checked out the resorts forum for the wilderness lodge?
And if there is one thing I have learned about Florida in August/September, it is hot and humid. Tell your wife not to worry about makeup and getting her hair perfect. You will all be sweaty as soon as you leave your room. You'll adjust and make it through the day. And check out allears.net for menus. There are lots of vegetarian options.
Safe Travels to your family.

Hello! We are also first timers to the world. We use to live in San Diego up until the Navy moved us in April 2014, we now reside in Lemoore which is near Fresno. We had DLR annual passes for about three years and it broke our hearts to not renew them when we moved, but 6 hours away just wasn't doable with our crazy conflicting work schedules here and his recent deployment. So, we plan on doing DLR once or twice a year, we just went in June. I'm SUPER excited to visit WDW in September. I'll be stalking this thread. ;)

Sounds like you have done your research and Im sure you will have a blast! We're going at the same time, the crowds then a super manageable and as you said if you hit rope drops you will be amazed at how much you get done the first 2 or 3 hours. Plan on not doing everything but you then will be pleasantly surprised at how much you will do.

Congrats on your 1st trip - you will have a blast!!!

Once your wife snorts that Pixie Dust, she will too!! :)

It sounds like you have done your homework and will have a great trip! My family and I went in June and we did a split stay, because like you, I really wanted to stay at a Deluxe. We did Caribbean Beach for a few days and then moved over to the Yacht Club. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I am so glad we did it. I have always wanted to try the Wilderness Lodge, so we may do that one next time.

One of the things that my wife was concerned about was that our son would be too afraid to ride some rides. He really doesn't like the dark, and last time we had passes, he didn't want to ride Pirates (he was 5 and had loved it when younger). He also was afraid of the coasters.
We've been going to Disneyland a lot in preparation and in the past couple of weeks, he has surprised us both. He went on Big Thunder a couple of times, and the Matterhorn and Indiana Jones and loved them all. I'm not sure if we are going to make it on Space Mountain, but he's been a real champ. In fact, I had to update our Fastpasses for Animal Kingdom because now he wants to ride Expedition Everest, where before he thought it looked too scary.
I think that has made my wife a little less apprehensive, although she is still concerned about food. She's also paranoid that we will all get sick from the water, so she ordered a couple of cases of bottled water. I would rather not haul bottles of water on my back everyday, but at this point, I'm willing to do that if it makes her a little more (mentally) comfortable.

Well, the first thing you have to consider is that DW rides are mostly located inside! because of the hot Florida son they make long Q's that are inside, air conditioned and are themed to the ride you will go on. A lot of them are also a bit dark so it may bother your son a little. second, DO NOT COMPARE TO DISNEY LAND! they are totally different even though they have similar rides. Just go and have fun, everything will be fine!

You are going to have a great time. WDW is similar but different from WDL. No advice, just get ready for things to be further apart from each other . Dont' forget that the parks are only a small part of what is at WDW and find some resort hopping time to check them out. They are all very different with different restsurants and activities and such.
