Last time we cruised DCL and Key West was on the schedule we got off the ship ourselves and took the kids to the aquarium there and walked around town a bit. I loved the city but wish I knew more of where to actually go/things to do. So we are getting to stop there again on our next cruise so I was wondering, what is everyone's favorite thing/excursion in Key West?

We took the Old Town Trolley (Hop on Hop off). Did the entire circuit. Then stopped at Kermits for many Key Lime treats. Went to Truman's Little White House and the Ernest Hemingway House (6 toed cats along with the history). I would have liked to have had time to visit the shipwreck museum - looks interesting to me - and I assume that KIDS enjoy it. And we visited the Southernmost Point in the US.

My husband and I were there in May. We stayed there for 5 days. If you want the best Cuban food ever go to El Siboney. I am not kidding. The Sangria is wonderful...you can tell it is homemade! But, don't expect any froo-froo here. This restaurant is all about eating good authentic food and getting on with your day!

For dessert, stop by Kermit's (or any ice cream shop - they all have them) and get the frozen key lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate. I am not kidding! (And please send me some!)

We enjoyed the trolley tour we went on because it gave you an overview of the island...City View Trolleys.

I would do a lot of just walking around! If you want to enjoy a few drinks I can give you some fabulous bars! The Hemingway House is neat. I am partial to polydactyl cats because my cat has 9 on each of the front paws and six on each of the back paws!

Also, if you ever need a great hotel in Key West you must stay at the Orchid Key Inn! They have a cute little bar too!

We did a wonderful snorkel/kayak trip with Danger Charter. I simply can not say enough good things about them! The trip was small...maybe 20 people max! They are very big on safety...which, as a former sailing instructor, gave them points from me! We went snorkeling first! We saw a good about of fish! They got in the water with you and pointed out things I would have missed. Then had a nice lunch on the ship. Then, we went kayaking in the mangroves! That was really incredible! Again, they go with you and teach you things. They know their wildlife and are working to protect it! We saw this very rare spoon billed bird...(I forgot the official name)...there were only two last year and now there are 4 with babies! We cheered! I saw baby sharks, horseshoe crabs, loggerhead turtles, etc. Also, there is plenty of beer and wine for the sail back!

So, on the trolley, are you just purchasing your tickets on line before you go? I noticed the trolley is not listed on DCL's excursions, so we'd have to do it on our own (which is fine). Just curious what others had done. I like the idea of being able to "hop on, hop off" at places we want to stop.

Also, for those of you who have done the trolley before, are the trolley's pretty frequent?

We did the trolley tour one year and di not think it was worth it. We got off the trolley near the southern most part of the island and waited quite awhile for another trolley because they usually leave full and few people would get off so we had to wait for a trolley that had available seats. I would just recommend walking. The butterfly museum was nice but only lasted about half an hour. I would enjoy the ship for most of the day and then walk off when they start setting up the sunset festival at the pier. Very interesting merchandise and the "catman" is great, also the tight rope walker.

We spent a week in KW 13 years back. May not be an excursion per se but we loved the tour at Truman's Little White House and the tour through the Hemingway House. Finding a great place for lunch like Pepe's -- that would be my perfect afternoon in KW.

I saw on another post someone mentioned about a sandal factory. Does anyone know about that?

Kino Sandals

Kino Sandals, Inc. located in Key West, Florida. All of the sandals sold at Kino Sandals are handmade using natural leather uppers and natural rubber soles. They are assembled and glued in our traditional sandal factory in Kino Plaza at the corner of Greene and Fitzpatrick Streets. If you are in Key West, please feel free to visit and watch as our sandals are made.

My DD and I love their sandals and they are decent priced!
Also Old town trolley is totally worth it. We were in KW this summer and we loved being able to get on and off wherever we wanted to stop. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is a great hamburger joint!

What kind of cost would there be for the sandals?

In May 2012 we did a chartered seaplane tour for my hubby's 40th birthday. It was awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone. Not long after we got home we actually spotted the same company AND our pilot on the Travel Channel. That was pretty cool!

We plan on doing the trolley. Frozen Key Lime Pie dipped in chocolate is not to be missed. Margaritas and people watching is on our agenda this time. Relaxing day!

We did the Catamaran Sail and Snorkel back in May. It is with Fury but we booked it through Disney. The staff was excellent! They were fun and entertaining and very helpful with my daughter who was terrified once she got in the water. They stayed with her and talked to her and helped her calm down lol. You can buy a neat little booklet type thing with 2 pics and it comes with a keychain of a smaller version of one of the pics. Here's one of the pics:
