Wow...that water looks pretty rough in the channel. Glad she made it back.
Wow. TugBoat assisting the Fantasy into channel. That's rare!
2 of them helping, actually.
And now I see a THIRD tug guiding the Fantasy in. Conditions in the cannel must be very bad.
Why is that rare?
I'm totally clueless with this stuff. Are they pushing that huge ship? This is very interesting to watch! Explain how this process works to me.
I wonder if PC required the Fantasy to have tug assistance, given the fact that Monarch of the Seas was already ported and the wind is obviously blowing...or if the conditions are simply too much for the stern / bow thrusters to manage?
Tonkas Skipper, are you around??
Tugboats are AWESOME!!! It's amazing how they can help a ship of that size move around in turbulent waters!
Saw a very interesting post on cruise critic about this. Some of the interesting points from that post:
the port captain may require tugs under these conditions.
The ship's captain may decide for safety (and career) purposes to have tugs
The Monarch actually never left yesterday.
On you tube their is a whole video of building and sea trials of one of the Disney ships. One had a bow thruster problem and they show bottom of ship in dry dock. These new ship do not. Have fixed propellers. Aft unit rotate and bow has two thrust units that when in use push either port or starport. They can sit in one place and rotate 36O degrees. It allows them to arrive and depart ports without assist from tugs. The wind was blowing enough to create an issue today at Canaveral. Think about the surface area of the side of the Fansty and start pushing on it with a 20 mph wind. This may be more force that the thrusters can over come. Tug get on for and aft and apply force to help turn ship. They were running real late too, and this speeds up process.
Using tugs is expensive. 1000 per hour.
Exactly....since DCL is typically the first into PC to dock, I wonder how much concern there was for loss of control while maneuvering in the turning basin to get Fantasy docked and possible collision with Monarch.
That was good information.
Also hearing that Disney is offering 25% off a future cruise or WDW stay. Very classy if true since they really aren't obligated to do anything.
Has Fantasy left yet or when will she?
It's rumored to leave around 8pm
Sent from my iPhone using DISBoards
Just checked Port Canaveral web cam and she is still sitting in port..
But Monarch of the Seas is just pulling out.
I would think it would be leaving soon, and on a side note, I figured out how to watch the PC webcam though my Apple TV. Yay me!
How did you get it to work thru your Apple TV?
AirPlay by your iPad, iPhone, or itouch.
