Has anyone ever been offered or been allowed to purchase an upgrade at check-in for an Aulani DVC reservation?

You can not purchase an upgrade with cash for a points reservation. Points & cash do not mix. If there is availability, you can upgrade with points. On rare occasions, if your assigned room has to go out of service for a maintenance issue, and there are no similar category rooms available, you may receive an upgrade. Upgrades are few and far between with DVC Point reservations.

I wonder why though....would be a good way for them to get extra revenue if the upgraded room is empty.

    1) Cash rooms and points rooms are different inventories.

    2) You are working with different legal entities, Disney cash reservations would need to be paid for the room. What happens to the originally reserved points room?

Think of it like two houses next to each other. You paid to rent House A, but really want to stay in House B, but it is owned by someone else. The owner of House B is going to want full price to let you stay there, not just the difference between what you paid the owner of House A, and the normal price of House B.

You can pay cash for 1 or 2 nights and the rest points. The end result might be what you want to do, assuming availability.
