Last I heard it was being canceled but now I see chatter about it being back on the books.

    What's the latest info?

    Thanks in advance.

I've been hearing that its on hold...

Even though the Festival of the Lion King is moving doesn't mean that Avatar is replacing that area.

It is coming... They moved the characters out of Camp Mickey Minnie (although some are there temporarily) and construction is about to begin, if it hasn't already, on a new area in Africa for Festival of the Lion King. All of this isn't happening for nothing, Avatarland is coming.

By all indications...they are building a new lion king theater in Africa and emptying out the camp area...

So something is being built there.

I still can't believe it till I see it. Avatar that is...to say that this may be the most tepid response to a major addition in Disney history might be the biggest understatement in human history.

Avatar...as a whole...seemed always to be an enigma. It was a billion dollar movie that everyone saw...
...and yet I've never heard ANYONE mention it in any context since:

It's almost like the Enron of box office history...it's tough to believe it made that much money.

I can only assume that Disney is getting a great deal on this...as in Cameron is throwing significant money in.

If Disney were footing the entire bill...the response - basically none - would have "shelved" it.

The only thing I question in this post is the "tepid" comment-- If it is referring to the publics response to the addition, what are you basing it on? If it is these boards, I think the people who are pro avatar do not have the energy or desire to post " yey avatar" every time they are on, where the cons seem to always be more vocal. Maybe a poll is in order---

Tom Staggs just confirmed this today in his Disney Springs announcement. He said progress in 'on track'. Link is below

Dave protesters are always the loudest (think tree huggers and tea party folks)

when Avatar was announced it was trending on twitter all day... once actual ride/rides are announced you ll see a little more excitement...just my opinion...

For me, its less the "protesters", and more of the fact that Avatar has become little more than a footnote in cultural history. It never had the cultural impact that a lot expected it to, and the fanbase has more or less died out. It was a huge movie, sure, but it's not a "classic" and will never be.

we ve had these arguments before so i half way dont want to post about it but,

    all time gross
9 academy award nominations with 3 wins
highest rated movie premiere on FX
all time high #1 Blue ray sales
40,000,000 likes on face book page compared to 10,000,000 likes for star wars (no im not a star wars hater i actually hope we see expansion in DHS)

you re right one movie that came out four years ago so they definitely need to add to the franchise with more movies (avatar 2 and 3 out by 2015/2016)

i guess we will have to wait and see how popular it is at animal kingdom but i would bet anything if avatar is done right you ll see a 10 to 15% increase in attendance at DAK

Never said it was not a success.
It's pretty widely accepted that it didn't have the cultural impact that many expected it to have. People like it (and will like Avatarland), but there's no denying the fact that it doesn't have the actual fanbase and impact that other "big" films do. Sure, a lot of people casually "like" it, but not enough people actually LOVE it.

You can turn on the TV and see a number of pop-culture references to Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Disney films, superheros etc; you just don't have people passionate about Avatar.

    trust me on this one.
as someone who spends much of their energy going to media conventions and as someone who studied film, its easy to see that Avatar is more or less considered a thing of the past at this point. It would be wise for Disney to wait on the sequels, if they ever appear (Cameron is notorious for ditching projects), and see if they are actually worthwhile.

but i ve given you several hard facts/examples as to why avatar is and has been relevant..you re giving opinions

maybe its that you re not passionate about it....regardless avatar is alive and hopefully people keep an open mind and visit it when it opens...carsland is a very average film yet the land itself is incredible you hardly need to have a great film in order to have an incredibly immersive land..avatar is set up perfectly for a theme park with the bioluminesece and floating mountains themes of living in harmony with nature/conservation is perfect for DAK

i mean is song of the south relevant? or twilight zone? neither are but the rides are some of disneys best....a great ride is a great ride

i think the greatest movie franchise ever is The Godfather...great storyline, great quotes, and characters but it would make a terrible ride in a theme park...sometimes we over analyze these things..bottom line line is what make s a great theme park attraction and are they fun for families

i think avatar presents something fun and possibly interactive for families of all ages..maybe im wrong we will see

the OP wanted to know the status of the land not peoples opinion on avatar thats for another thread feel free to rip away

avatar was so popular because it was the first truely spectacular 3d effects film... other than that... blah

dedicating a whole land to that movie would be EXTREME overkill in my opinion - if they want to build a section of the park for mythical creatures and have an avatar "attraction" then so be it... but being tied to "avatar" for a whole land... not smart

I was going to respond...instead see above

EXACTLY...no one is doubting the stats on Avatar...but it has no measurable cultural impact.

    No buzz...none.
