Disneyland carousel

Does anyone here know the progress of the Disneyland carousel restoration? It is still a big hole in the Fantasyland ground. Wasn't it supposed to be completed by the Fall? Is this another attraction that current DL management is going to walk away from? Any news would be appreciated.

It was supposed to be November, but someone on Laughing Place said that according to the DL website it would be closed through Jan 30, 2003 which was the last date the schedules were valid, so it could be even longer.

The damage to the attraction was worse than originally thought. That basically means we're getting a brand new carousel (with a row of benches for ADA, but all the same horses) which will take longer. On the bright side, it sounds like they're doing this right, so with proper upkeep this should last for a hundred years.

My understanding of it is that when they began the refurb and install the ADA requirements they found wood root and the entire carousel is having to be rebuilt, which is taking a lot longer then the original refurb was suppose to take. Don't look for it to be reopened until January / Feb.

I was there a few weeks ago and can contest to the fact that it is really all now just a hole in the ground.

Restoring an antique carousel is no small task. Take the time and do it right.

Of course they could possibly put up a tacky temporary cloth roofed fiberglass and aluminum carousel, but then, Disneyland is not "just another amusement park".

9/2 -- Rode on a restored antique carousel in Mt. Pleasant IA, which ran on wheels under the platform that followed a circular track. It was powered by a steam engine specially made for carousels. The two rows of horses did not have poles, and they rocked back and forth rather than rise and fall. The carousel was a cloth roofed portable for traveling carnivals but now permanently installed in a custom made building.
