When I go to WDW, I try to pay for everything on gift cards because I can get them at 5% off at Target using my RED card. So, it's like getting 5% off of everything down there, which is great.

The problem was, $3000 in gift cards that come in $50 increments is kind of a pain and then redeeming them one at a time at the hotel desk takes a LONG time.

Target has $100 gift cards now (for Christmas), which cuts the number of cards in half, yay. Also, I found out you can go to the Disney gift card website, create an account, and transfer balances to reduce the number of cards. Each card can hold $1000. That way if you lose a card, you can also transfer the balance off of it onto another one.

TL/DR:
  • Buy discount cards
  • Create an account at https://www.disneygiftcard.com
  • Transfer balances
  • Charge everything to your room
  • Get a "discount" on everything during your trip
  • Save a lot of time and have protection from losing your card(s)

In addition to your tips, also watch for specials that Target runs on their own giftcards. Before Christmas, they had 10% off of up to $300 in Target giftcards.

So, using my Disney Visa, I bought $300 in Target giftcards for only $270. And received Disney Reward points on the $270.

Then on the Target website, I purchased $300 in Disney giftcards by posting my Target RedCard in the payment area and then posting my $300 Target giftcard. I received the 5% RedCard savings so the $300 in Disney Giftcards only cost me $255 in the end because I still had $15 left on my Target giftcard - that had originally only cost me $270.

Perfect way to save on Disney before you even arrive!

I did the same thing! I think they only run that discount once a year. The year before it was on Black Friday.

The last 4 trips have been paid using discounted GCs (saved close to $1,000), and by using the Disney GC site to combine them:) Another big advantage of using Disney's GC site is if for any reason you lose or accidentally throw out the primary card, you can quickly get on their site and transfer the remaining balance to another card. We have saved up to 12% by combining cardpool and Target discounts. Currently Cardpool is selling Target GCs with a 4.5% discount and then you would use those GCs on Targets site to purchase Disney GCs with the additional redcard savings of 5%, for a grand total of 9.5% savings.

If you are paying with a Target gift card for a Disney gift card, how does the 5% red card discount get applied?

When you go to post your payment method, first post your Target RedCard. The system then knows to apply free shipping and the 5% discount. Then post your Target gift cards and you'll only pay the discounted price.

The stackable discounts only can be done on the website, not in store.

The target redcard discount is automatic
No. Not automatic. You have to have the REDCard as your default form of payment when paying online. Then, you need to change your form of payment to a Target GC after the 5% discount has been applied to your total. Just having the REDCard attached to your online Target account is not going to work. You have to follow those steps if you want to ultimately pay using a Target GC.

Thanks for the tip. I just transferred all of my gift card to one! Big help thanks!

Yes, thanks - will work on this soon.

Yes, agree it does work like this - at least did for me.

I don't shop at Target....but this deal sounded like it might be worth opening a charge account there just for the Disney discounts. But.....when I look on Target's website it specifically says:

5% discount does not apply to the following:

  • Prescriptions, clinic services at Target and Target Optical™ eye exams
  • Target gift cards and prepaid cards
  • Previous purchases
  • Target credit account payments, Target Debit Card cash back and cash advances on the Target MasterCard
  • Gift wrap and shipping and handling charges on Target.com purchases
  • Wireless protection program purchases and deposits required by mobile carrier
  • Where otherwise prohibited by law
Wouldn't Disney cards be considered "prepaid cards"?

As of right now, Target categorizes Disney GC as "entertainment" cards, so they qualify for the discount. However, because of the increase of GC "churning", many fear the Disney GC will be reclassified. Please go to the budget board and check out the gift card thread. Excellent explanations there.
