Disney Cruise Review: Star Wars Day at Sea, Part 1

We were also on that cruise and after experiencing it it wasn't such a crushing blow that my son got sick the night before! We spent the morning in our room and we kept him from the Jedi training just in case it wasn't just a case of too much ice cream the night before. The roaming characters were fun for hubby and son who went out in the afternoon for a bit to scout for them. We made it to dinner and loved the special menu. After that the kid insisted on going to the fireworks and show with dad but with a toddler who wouldn't go to the nursery I had to miss it. It really doesn't sound like I missed much though! If it had been a stellar star specked day like people had been hoping for it would have sucked so much more for his timing on being sick. We feel like you, it wasn't a complete fail but definitely lacked the Disney magical touch and they didn't deliver as they described.

I read your report this morning and it's been bothering me all day. If the cruise cost appx 20% more it's inexcusable that it was so lame, and especially that they didn't do more to include more kids in the Jedi training, and that it was so poorly run.
I especially find the part where they over-promoted and hyped then under-delivered irksome. I don't come to these forums to bash DCL, but your report really brings home what I've been hearing from many about the fading magic of the line.
If the cruise had been the same price, or only a bit more, or the events had a separate cost to them, then how thing were run would be acceptable. But to up-charge the whole cruise and then leave so many kids out, or to promote a speaker who doesn't know what she's talking about, or to advertise that one of the adult clubs would turn into the Mos Eisley Cantina from Episode 4, but that never happened, or that “celebrities and insiders from the Star Wars galaxy will share their experiences, meet fans, and sign autographs” didn't happen either sounds like a bait and switch. I'm glad your family made the most of it, but I would have been royally p*ssed. (I would have LOVED to see the cantina re-enacted!) And if I thought that any of the above was part of what I was purchasing, to not have it would have sent me, and especially my husband (a contracts lawyer) over the edge.
Thanks for writing your report. I really hope that DCL makes the SWDAS at least what they promised, and of course why we go to Disney is that they often over-deliver!

Our family's going on the trip for Feb 6th. DCL just sent us an email that talks about SWDAS. Guess what they omitted from the letter? “celebrities and insiders from the Star Wars galaxy will share their experiences, meet fans, and sign autographs”

At least they tell us in the email that there will not be a fireworks display or themed late buffet on Pirate Night.

We were on this cruise. I booked first day prices came out. When they announced Star Wars Day, I thought about trying to change it to the cruise that left the week earlier, but as we are in Australia & our trip was for 5 weeks, everything else had been booked and planned, so it wasn't going to work.
We are not really Star Wars fan, but everything I read about the day sounded great, so thought this was going to be fun.
Well let me say , we had a nice time , but it wasn't as magical as I thought it was going to be, I read so much information & looked at so many photos of Disney cruises, this was going to be the highlight of the trip , or so I thought.
The Sail Away party, we were up on deck and I stood my kids behind a short lady & her daughter, little did I know after standing there for 30 mins, she was only holding the space for the rest of her family as she had seen the show before, the rest of the family turned up on their scooters just as the show began, so we got pushed back, so feeling a little annoyed I told the kids to stand on one of the steps behind us.
Things got better, we enjoyed Cozumel, apart from the rain in the morning, had a lovely day in Grand Cayman.
I was very disappointed to find out there was no Pirates Menu & that the servers didn't wear their pirate uniforms at dinner service. Oh well, but I made sure the kids got up on deck and got a spot on the railing to see the show, lol yep it rained, so the show was moved inside, wow too crowded. & noisy & too late to get a good view after making our way from the deck.
Star Wars day, really ? Saw a couple of storm troopers at the pool, we didn't get to go to the meet & greets, even though we handed in the form? Kids not interested in the Jedi training.
I was. Again dissapointed at dinner, I thought the servers would be dressed to fit the scene, nup.
Got up on deck about an hour before the so called show, people already staking their spots, so walked around & then walked up to where one person was standing, she literally ran & pushed me out of the way, I must admit I let her have a few choice words, there was enough room for 3 or 4 more people to stand there, but she was obviously saving the space for the rest of her party. That was enough for me, I took the kids down to the pool area , they sat & watched there & I walked up to the 18plus area, had a drink & watched the fireworks in piece, they were excellent, I must say.
BTW, where was the laser show? Was that with the show?
The kids recorded the show & said see " it was pretty crappy, you didn't miss much mum". Lol
The biggest disappointment was not docking at Castaway Cay, I understand the safety issues, but that was hard to take, then when the rain came and you couldn't go outside, we just walked around, nothing they arranged really appealed to us, in fact I just wanted to be back in Port Canavaral and off the ship.
We felt that the menus at dinner, were nearly all the same, just different names, our servers were good, but nothing to rave about, we had 2nd serving & always felt like it was rushed to get us out. They never offered us more of anything or mentioned you could have 2 appetisers or 2 desserts. Even when we didn't eat something because we didn't like it, they never asked if we wanted something else.
The cabin attendant was nice & funny, I didn't realise though he threw out most of our navigators, I kept them in a neat little pile and wanted to bring them home, we managed to bring 3 home.
Also we did have to ask for soap & shampoo twice.
All in all it was good, but as I said not magical.
We did manage a few photos with characters, not Star Wars ones as they seemed to run off as people were trying to take a photo.
I think we were sick of lining up as we had just spent 2 weeks at WDW and some of the lines for character photos were always soooo long.
I did get tickets for my daughter to meet the princess & we all did the frozen girls.
I doubt if we will get the chance again, 19 hour flight and costs, probably not!

Thank you for sharing this. We're scheduled to go April 16th. My son is going to be so disappointed if he can't do the Jedi academy, yikes! I figured they would arrange it so that most, if not all, interested children would be able to participate. I was hoping for a more intense experience than what it sounds like it will be

Wow. We tossed around the idea of booking a Star Wars cruise because DS is a huge fan, but we just couldn't make the schedule work. Sounds like we dodged an (expensive!) bullet. I would have been seriously disappointed in that experience. Sorry, OP. I hope the feedback you gave DCL improves the experience for future cruisers.

I'm anxious to hear what changes if any were put into place during this last sailing. We are going on the sailing in a week. I think the thing that disappoints me the most is the way Jedi training academy was run. My daughter is a huge Vader fan and really is looking forward to the academy.

looks like the new head of DCl is dropping the ball big time. but I think this is a matter of departments not talking to each other. PR and marketing promised more than the cruiseline could actually offer. Celebrity autographs and meet andgreets? for one day at a theme park is one thing but 7 days on a cruise ship? would be a nightmare and they would have to have the best accomodations and really there is no VIP area for them to eat so areas would have to be cut off and cabins probably conceirge would go unsold. and as far as the cantina band, there is a limited number of entertainment staff onboard and there would be no time for them to go from one costume on deck to run downstairs and change into another costume let alone having to pay to "recreate" the cantina in one of those clubs. so i think the promos were done and then the cruiseline head saw the budget and cut it. they should have changed the website then and not get guests expectations up. If i were on that cruise I would not only have complained on the guest card but i would be sending complaints to DCL. I wouldn;t complain about not going to castaway cay because that was weather related but I would be complaining that what was promised on SWDAT wasn't there. If enough guests complain then things will change and maybe this new DCL president will think twice about not living up to promises. This is just another in a long line of things that DCL has as of late screwed up and management must be held responsible.

Ugh. So my husband and I are scheduled to sail on the Feb 20th Star Wars cruise. I've been super excited, but after everything I've seen and read, I am SUPER glad we booked this cruise before the $1k price hike once they made it a SWDAS cruise. I'd be pissed as hell if I'd paid a premium.

I love the pirate stuff. I get that they maybe don't have the capacity to two fireworks on two nights. I don't understand why they can't do the pirate menu or buffet, or why they can't have the servers in pirate attire. Major bummer for me, honestly.

I also don't understand why there is only 1 real pro photo Op for SWDAS, and why the only real adult-oriented activity is a trivia contest at 11pm at night. There's no reason why they couldn't do more photo ops, especially since it is a sea day. If they can pull out 5 or 6 pirate-themed characters for photo ops on pirate night, why can't we get multiple Star Wars options on a full day at sea?

Don't get me wrong. It is a Disney cruise and I'm sure we'll have fun. But if Disney expects us to fork over a premium for another themed cruise, we'll think twice and book a regular one instead.

My family is also booked on the Feb. 20 cruise. We did end up paying the extra $1,000. :furious: We were really looking forward to this and then the reviews came out. If we had found this out prior to the full pay date, we would have cancelled and chose a non-SWDAS cruise. Not having the celebrities and only getting two real meet and greets is not acceptable to us. I disagree that it would have been difficult to accommodate celebrity guests. Most of us would have been happy just to have some voice actors from the animated series or maybe people who worked on the movies. We're not talking A listers here. I'm sure a free seven day cruise with a veranda would have sufficed. It also doesn't help that I've seen star wars themed parties on pinterest with more thought and effort. My personal opinion is Disney is trying to see how much extra they can charge for a "themed cruise" while providing as little extra as possible.

I intend to be super vocal about my displeasure on the comment cards and will probably follow up with a physical letter to their customer service office. My only hope is that with 2 more SWDAS sailings before ours, that they will make some changes based on feedback.

I hope the other SWDAS sailing make comments if they are unhappy as well. Maybe it won't affect our cruise but hopefully it'll affect future themed sailings

I know they are actively surveying people before and during the cruise. I got emailed to take a survey before the cruise and will be doing one while on the cruise.

I've seen the survey emailed to some folks, about how they'd feel about having an entire cruise themed, and what themes would appeal to them. But if that is handled anything like SWDAS, I'm not optimistic about future offerings being any better.

I was on this identical itinerary two years ago and the addition of the Star Wars stuff still sounds totally worth it to me. I am mostly disappointed that the cantina likely won't be what we hoped/expected it to be.

As to the expense, it takes a lot of time, effort and expense for Disney to put the whole thing together. Developing new shows, new fireworks, new costumes, new food, new menus, new activities, etc, for a limited run of cruises is not an insignificant thing for them to do. They can't spread the cost of that over 52 weeks a year like they can with the other entertainment they provide. They have to train their staff (who are already temporary employees) on new procedures and policies and they have to try to make it seamless and magical for us to enjoy. Seeing what I've seen so far is already enough to convince me that we made a good choice on this cruise and I'm totally excited about it.

Hey, there WAS a celebrity on this cruise! He had concierge but did eat amongst the "common folk" with his family a few times. Apparently my dining rotation but I never noticed d'oh! He was mostly left alone to be with his family, people were respectful. He wasn't Star Wars related though, he may have been more swarmed if he was. So yes, celebrities can be accommodated :).
