DCL Trip Insurance

    We bought the insurance through DCL for our Baltic cruise this summer. We bought our air separate form the cruise. Does our insurance cover our flights also or do I need to get a separate policy for them? I thought I read somewhere that it did, but can't find it in the policy info online.

    The DCL insurance only covers what you book through DCL. So since you bought your air separately, you need to buy extra insurance to cover that (and if you're traveling to your destination early or leaving late, that cost is also not covered unless you booked your pre/post-days through Disney).

    You *can* get a refund of the DCL insurance up until your PIF date, if you are interested in buying one outside policy to cover the airfare *and* your cruise. You can get much better coverage from an outside company, generally for much less than what DCL charges. The only 2 advantages of the DCL insurance is that if you cancel the cruise before the PIF date, the insurance is refundable if you've had no claims, and if you cancel your cruise for an uncovered reason, you get a credit with DCL for your cruise cost.

    Is it too late to drop your DCL insurance and purchase privately? DCL insurance costs more than most (other insurance depends on your age...so DCL may be cheaper for elderly guests), generally provides less coverage, etc. In addition, it covers only what you booked thru DCL, so in your case the airfare wouldn't be covered.

    I have the insurance & flying in on free tickets using ff miles. I arrive 24 hours before the cruise. If for some unforseen reason we have major travel issues that prevent us from arriving in time for the cruise, can we cancel at the last minute & at least get to keep the credit for a future cruise?

    Bump. Does anybody know if I can cancel at last minute & retain the value of my cruise if we run into major issues?

    That was the policy stated on DCL's web site a month ago....can't say if it's changed since then. It said that any amount not covered by insurance would be credited toward a future cruise.

    that is what I thought I had read. I couldn't find a time frame in which you had to cancel by. I am assuming this means I can cancel 1 hour before the cruise leaves if I get stuck elsewhere.

    Again, I sure don't plan on this happening, but know that on rare occassions people get delayed over 24 hours on a flight. I want to make sure before I spend the money on the insurance, that I would at least keep the value of my cruise for a future cruise.

    I'm going to suggest you call DCL and get a copy of the insurance policy. That's the only way you're going to know for sure.

    I have a copy of it & just reread it & it isn't clear. I will call them & see if I can get an explanation.

    Good news. Even if I cancel right before the cruise, no matter what the reason, we get to keep the value towards a future cruise. This makes it worth spending the extra money for the Disney insurance in my mind.

    You're right, I found it online, and it's not clear.

    It *DOES* clearly state that a *covered* cancellation is up until the time & date of your trip departure. After that, it's considered trip interruption. But the blurb on the cover page about the credit does not specify any sort of timeframe.

    This is actually being provided by DCL, not by the insurance company (Access America) so you'd need to ask DCL for clarification of their policy.
