Hi All. This TR is about our 10 night vacation to Key Largo and Orlando (both Universal and WDW/MK).

For those who have not read the PTR (found here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/were-back-pretr-–-me-dd12-and-mom73-–-girls-trip-to-fl-keys-universal-and-wdw-4-18-4-27.3384558/ ), here’s a little bit about us. I’m a happily divorced mom of a 12 year old daughter. I traveled with my DD, aka Boo and my 73 year old Mom. Boo’s a typical tweenage girl who flips back and forth from child to teenager several times each day. Mom is a very young 73. She is a tiny thing who eats like a truck driver and has enough energy to put most 20 year olds to shame. She’s usually very easy going but we call her The General when she gets all bossy. We three have taken many vacations together and we usually all get along pretty well even when we’re tired and cranky!

This trip we planned to spend 1 night in Ft. Lauderdale, 5 nights in Key Largo and 4 nights in Orlando at the Universal Royal Pacific with one epic open til close day at Magic Kingdom scheduled for Friday 4/24!

I don’t have a picture of the 3 of us together but here is one of Mom and Boo and another of Boo and I:

How this trip came to be:

The past few years we’ve traveled at the end of the school year (mid-late June for us) returning on or around July 4th weekend – each time from the West (Hawaii and Cali), ending up with jet lag and missing out on one of the best times to be home in Boston. By the time I recovered from the time away from work, the summer was ½ over! This year we decided to go away during April school vacation instead. Boo is a great student, mostly A’s so I don’t mind if she misses 1 or 2 days of school at the beginning or end of a break. The original plan was to go on a Caribbean cruise along with my DB, DSIL and DNephew. I thought a cruise would be fun for Boo as she has never been and it would be a great way to see multiple islands with no packing/unpacking and no driving. We had a cruise from San Juan all picked out (but not booked) and were just waiting for a better airfare window to open up when DSIL and DB decided that they could not swing the cruise this year after all due to some unexpected other expenses.

I didn’t think just the 3 of us on a cruise would be as much fun as with a group so we started looking for a single Caribbean island to visit instead which soon turned to a search for a FL beach vacation so I could use my hotel points and Southwest points to pay for most of our trip. We ended up deciding on the FL Keys because we are not ones to lie around on the beach or by the pool all day and the Keys has plenty to see and do. I’ve been to Key West several times and have always wanted to see the other Keys. With that decided, I started checking reviews on Trip Advisor and flyertalk. Originally I booked the Hilton Key Largo Resort but a few months later I got scared off by a sudden influx of bad reviews. I switched us over the Key Largo Hampton Inn which had glowing reviews from just about everyone. We decided to research but not plan any specific activities, just to wing it while we were down there. NOT our usual style at all. I’ve been accused of over planning by Boo several times, especially after last year’s 10 day, 9 night, 6 hotel, road trip from San Diego to San Francisco. I agreed to wing it this time around hoping we would not come to regret that decision!!!

Since Boo and I have APs for Universal which are good through November, we decided to add a few days on the back end of the trip and stop in Orlando on the way home. The General has had her fill of theme parks over the years after raising 3 children and then doing it all over again with 4 grandchildren… She opted to fly home and skip Orlando altogether.

After this first bit, this TR will be a bit pic heavy as I am a photo hobbyist and there was some gorgeous scenery to be found on this trip!

Friday – Travel Day

This was a very easy day for us. We had an 11:35am departure scheduled on Southwest. We live less than 20 minutes from Logan airport in Boston so we didn’t need to get up at the crack of dawn which was nice. On the other hand, we were so excited that we were up and ready to go by 7am so we ended up going out for breakfast before heading to the airport just to kill some time. Our local diner has THE best pancakes I’ve ever had anywhere.

We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare courtesy of our usual driver, my stepfather. This was the first time on Southwest for Mom and Boo. I tried to explain the no assigned seat and boarding position thing to Mom but she just couldn’t quite grasp it. I had paid for early bird check in for all of us so that we would not have to stress about getting seats together. IMO, the $12.50 pp for EBCI on SW is well worth it. I consider it part of the price of the ticket when comparing with other airlines. No way am I sitting in the middle seat between 2 strangers and fighting for overhead space when I can buy my way up front and on the aisle. We ended up just in front of the wing.

We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on time and headed to collect our luggage and find the Alamo car rental check in. Leaving the terminal to walk over to the car rental area, it was the first time we had been warm while outside since our last FL trip in November! We all stood for a minute just soaking in the warmth and sunshine. At Alamo we chose a Dodge Journey from the mid sized suv aisle. I loved this car! It was easy to drive and tons of room for all our stuff - bigger than a Honda CRV but smaller than my Pilot. Luggage stowed and phone GPS programmed, we headed off to the Hyatt Place - Ft. Lauderdale Convention Center and our first snag of the trip.

I had to do some haggling with the front desk - they tried to put us in a 1King room instead of 2Queens which I had reserved and confirmed prior to arrival and then they mentioned a $7 parking fee that I hadn’t seen on the website. We prevailed on the 2Q room but they would not budge on the parking fee. I think it’s a total rip off when hotels charge for parking unless they’re in a major city where parking is at a premium like DC or NYC. I pay it when I have to but I always put up a fight first. You’d be surprised how many times they wave it “as a courtesy” if you push back nicely and politely. Not this time however!

We got our room assigned and went to freshen up. We were starving at this point and wanted to get right to the beach to find some dinner. Boo was in charge of the GPS with the General tossing out instructions and suggestions from the back seat so of course we ended up at Bubba Gump’s which is a favorite vacation restaurant of hers. There seems to always be one at our destination when we travel. So far we’ve been to Bubba’s in Maui, City Walk, Santa Monica, Miami, San Fran and now Ft. Lauderdale. Since there isn’t one back home, I don’t mind that Boo and Mom always want to eat there. Boo had the fried chicken dinner (a family favorite), Mom had shrimp scampi and I had ribs. We were totally famished and ate like it was our last meal, lol. One of our favorite items on the menu is the chocolate chip cookie dessert. It’s a freshly baked warm chocolate chip cookie with ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Boo and I split one of those and the General had strawberry short cake. All items were totally yummy!

Here’s a pic of our cookie dessert – sorry about the missing bites, I couldn’t snap the pic with my spoon in my hand. There won’t be much food porn in this TR as I don’t usually remember until after we’re done that I should’ve snapped some pics of our meals…

We were all greatly anticipating our arrival in Key Largo the next day as it had been so cold and horrible back home and KL was expecting sunny and high 80s for most of the week!!! Yeay! It started to sprinkle as we were left Bubba’s. Hopefully it would not be raining for our drive south in the morning! The plan was to sleep in, have the free Hyatt Place breakfast and then take our time getting to our hotel in KL. Unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards…

Thanks for joining! I had so many pics to go through, still working on that but wanted to start the write up. Just realized I forgot to post the pic of our dessert, going to add it now.

Yes, Mom looks very young! She definitely has more energy than anyone I know.

I read your PTR and I'm eager to enjoy your trip! We also live minutes from Logan, it is so nice to not have a big drive after a flight :)

I hear you on feeling the sun, it was a long, hard, snowy February...

Day 1/Saturday/Key Largo/Sunsets and Manatees!!!

Ahhhh sleeping in on vacation… it’s the best, it’s so nice not to have to set an alarm clock or worry about waking up early. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. Crap, there goes my alarm on my phone, must have forgotten to unset it!!! Nope, not mine. BEEP BEEP BEEP. Not Boo’s either and the general couldn’t find the alarm on her phone if you offered her a million dollars (she’s living in the 80s when it comes to technology). BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. Not the hotel alarm clock… Now we’re all awake – and it’s only 6:45 am!!!! What the hello is going on here? I reluctantly get up and check out the window. The view if of the hotel parking lot apparently they’re getting deliveries at 6:45am on a Saturday morning right below our 4th floor window. Argh!

Well, we were all wide awake so we decided to get up and have breakfast and hit the road earlier than planned. It was Saturday so no rush hour traffic to work around. The weather was a gorgeous sunny 80 degrees and there was nothing keeping us in Ft. Lauderdale.

After a just ok free breakfast (no waffles maker????) with lots of people who were getting ready to leave on their week long cruise on the Oasis of the Seas, we packed up and headed for Key Largo. Boo and the General decided that Boo would take the co-pilot seat since she gets car sick on long rides and the General had plans to go back to sleep. A pretty uneventful 2 hours later we arrived at the Hampton Inn Key Largo.

Our room wasn’t ready so we put on our suits and headed to check out the grounds and the pool. The hotel was nicer than many Hampton Inns. There was a heated pool with plenty of seating, a tiki bar/outdoor lounge area, a man made beach and a dock area. We’d reserved a pool view and requested 2nd floor so I could pretty much see where our rooms would be.

The General headed right for the pool, happy to be out of the car and ready to soak up some rays. TG doesn’t burn and likes to lie in the sun. She’s ½ Portuguese so she just gets a nice tan. Boo and I tend to burn so we’re diligent about sun block and I will always sit in the shade whenever it’s available.

Boo and I headed to the beach and jumped right in. The water was an unbelievable 90+ degrees. It was literally like bath water. The hotel is on the bay side of Key Largo, Tarpon Basin, which is totally protected from the open water. The bay is like glass when there is no wind. The only waves we saw all week were when a boat would go by off shore. A little boy swam over to us and started talking a mile a minute, telling us all about himself. He was adorable. Later at the pool his mom was telling me that she rescues and fosters Yorkies and being that this was a pet friendly hotel, she had brought her latest with her. This little guy was hilarious. He was wearing an Elmo diaper because she was worried he would mark the hotel room and his tongue was about 2 inches too long for his mouth.

4pm finally a text that our room was ready! I was a bit disappointed that they hadn’t honored our request for 2nd floor. They offered to move us the following day and I said I’d take a look at the room and let them know. The reason I’d asked for 2nd floor is that I like to leave the sliders open at night and have fresh air but didn’t think we’d be able to do that with people walking by our room on the way to the beach or pool. The room itself was great. Fridge, microwave, wetbar, coffee maker, nice flat screen, table and chairs and sliders to a small patio - and yes, we would be on the path to the beach for about ¼ of the other rooms. Boo and The General decided that they liked the easy in/out to the pool and beach though and they overruled my intention to move to the 2nd floor.

We headed out to get some very late lunch/very early dinner – the highly recommended Mrs. Mac’s. Food was just ok but that had more to do with our choices than the food quality. We’re not big seafood eaters and the Keys is all about fresh seafood, some restaurants don’t even have steak on the menu! Your options in Key Largo are pretty much fish or Denny’s! Since Boo and I love BFD (breakfast for dinner), you know we did Denny’s at least once. While my dinner was unremarkable, the key lime pie I had for dessert was fabulous. My first key lime pie. Not sure how I avoided it on previous trips to Key West…blame it on the margaritas I guess.

Returning to the hotel about 7, we could see that the sun was setting. Boo and I headed to the beach to watch the sunset. Mom decided to sit on the patio and read her book and relax. We stopped at the Tiki Bar so I could grab a frozen anything and we met Mango, the bartender’s parrot. Mango and Don run the Tiki Bar. He pulls up in his little boat every afternoon with Mango riding along on his shoulder. He also has a bike with a wagon that he pulls his groceries and laundry in and Mango rides in the back.

When we reached the beach area, we took off our shoes and waded in just a bit. I had my camera with me and was snapping some pics of the sunset. There were a few other people standing in the water and many sitting on the beach. Suddenly one of the teenage boys near us called out “there it is” and something large and dark swam by us! It was a baby manatee, about 4 ft long. It swam around and right over to us. It was amazing!!! We’d read in the hotel reviews that some guests had seen manatees in the bay but I didn’t expect them to be so people friendly! Boo put her hand in the water and it swam right up to her. She sort of petted it for a few minutes. When she took a step back it followed her like a dog wanting more attention.

We’d see the manatees, both the babies (there were 2) and what we assumed was the mom, throughout the week. Very cool experience. Boo declared it “the best hotel ever!” Great first day!

It absolutely does sound like a great first day! Very relaxing - despite the unscheduled early start - and your daughter will always remember the manatees! How I would love to have a leisurely pool and beach day, taking pictures and just enjoying the fresh air and the scenery.

Great photos as usual, and I look forward to your next installment! ::yes::

Great update!! That Yorkie in a diaper was sooo cute!!! I really liked Mrs. Mac's...but you're right - the key lime pie was definitely the highlight!! I would go back just for that and the key lime freeze....basically the pie blended into a shake lol. The beach there looked so relaxing. I love the pic of Boo with the bird on her shoulder too...so cute!

The leisurely day at the pool and beach was a nice change from our usual breakneck speed!

Mango was a funny bird too - not very obedient. Several times we heard Don yelling "Mango, come down!" when it was time for him to go home and she would hide in a tree waiting for him to break out the treats (I think they were sunflower seeds but not certain). Don told us that Mango was very possessive of him and had bitten several of his previous girlfriends out of jealousy.

Boo was fascinated by that bird. We had to go to the Tiki Bar every night either before or after dinner to see if Mango was there. And when we got home she was researching having a parrot as a pet. Considering that in the past 12 years I've received printed memos on the costs of owning a Guinnea Pig, powerpoint presentations on owning and caring for a bunny, a music video with a song about taking care of a dog and dozens of emails and texts with pictures of cute puppies, I was not surprised by the sudden interest in parrots and I'm expecting to hear more about it from Boo any day now. Please note she does have a dog but he decided when he was a puppy that I was his person so she thinks we should get another one just for her.

Day 2/Sunday/Islamorada/Sunset!!!

The Hampton Inn has breakfast included and it was pretty good for a free buffet. Waffles, eggs, pastries, fruit and bacon or ham every day. It was uncrowded most days, just like the beach and the pool - even though the hotel parking lot was pretty full. After breakfast TG and Boo wanted to know what the plan was for that day. Now I think I said previously or in my PTR that they had accused me of overscheduling after last year's Cali trip so when they asked what the plan was I asked them what they wanted it to be. Crickets then started chirping at 9am. Seriously though, I had researched several things we could do and I had the info available but I had not made any solid plans or reservations. The options for Day 2 were explore Islamorada, snorkel in Key Largo, Dolphins Plus in KL, The Turtle Hospital in Marathon Key, Bahia Honda/7 Mile Bridge, catamaran sail, wave runner tour of the mangroves, kayaking... The hotel had kayaks and a stand up paddle board available on the beach for a small rental fee.

Boo of course wanted to see dolphins. She has been chasing that dream for years and was very disappointed when we were in Hawaii that we didn't do a dolphin swim. Frankly the options in Hawaii were just not what I wanted and since it's so expensive, I decided to wait until it was exactly what we wanted. Dolphins Plus in Key Largo came highly recommended from several sources. Mom was a little leery about the dolphin swim but didn't want to be left out. Her main issue with it was that she doesn't like to be in water over her head, even though she can swim ok (not great). I called Dolphins Plus but they could not accommodate us until the afternoon. We opted to schedule it for the next morning instead and then we headed out to Islamorada hoping to find some type of downtown area to walk around and shop, get lunch etc. After a day on a plane and the car ride and leisure time from the 2 days before, we all wanted to get some walking in.

We soon found out that Islamorada, like most of the other Keys, doesn't really have a downtown/pedestrian friendly area. Not like Duval St. or the off Duval areas in Key West. We did find a bunch of galleries in a sort of compound right on US1 where we found a nice smallish print of a manatee to compliment the dolphin painting I had bought Boo in Hawaii a few years ago.

We had had such a big breakfast that we decided to skip lunch and have an early dinner. We do that often while on vacation - as long as we have a few snacks before and after dinner, it seems to work for us. We decided to head back to the hotel around 3 and have a swim. The manatees came over to see who was in the water but they basically just swam by, no stopping to get petted. Boo was happy because my Mom got to see them. I was impressed that Mom didn't head for the hills when the first one swam by her! We hung out with the manatees for a while then ordered a pizza and spent some time just relaxing out on our patio waiting for sunset. This would turn out to be the prettiest sunset of the trip. The rest of the nights were nice but either a bit too cloudy to put on a good show or not cloudy enough to be interesting. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the sunset:

We went for another swim after sunset (in the pool this time because The General didn't raise no fools). After a few rounds of crazy 8's we went to bed excited to go on our dolphin adventure the next day!

You and your daughter are so alike!!

Lovely pictures, it looks so beautiful where you were and I love the parrot picture with daughter ::yes::........looks like it may be on a wish list in future.....unless of course you get another dog just for her..........

Looking forward to reading more of your trip :thumbsup2

I'd get another dog in a minute if I could be certain that the new dog would not also decide that I was it's #1 person. I work from home often and that is how i ended up with our dog being such a mama's boy instead of Boo's bff. When I get home later I'll have to post a pic of my little fur baby.

Sounds like a wonderful relaxing time...just what you need before tackling the parks...can't wait to hear about the rest.

Key lime pie...yum...you're hard on my diet...maybe I have some key lime yogurt in the fridge.

We interrupt this trip report to bring you a special post about my fur baby.

April Vacation 2015_6388a.jpg

Favorite food - pizza
Favorite place - beach
Loves - all people, big and small
Hates - going outside in the rain
Afraid of - the vacuum, plastic bags, the dry mop, other dogs (even yorkies), thunder storms, getting his feet wet, halloween decorations

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Day 3/Monday/Key Largo/Dolphins Plus

We were excited for our dolphin encounter. Breakfast was quick (and free!!!) and we were out the door. I programmed in the place on my phone GPS, we pulled out of the hotel parking lot and "your destination is on the right"! It was right next door - well the sheriff's office was in between but that was it. Needless to say we were early. Boo and I had gotten a bit sunburned the day before. I had a swimshirt with me but none of Boo's fit her from the previous year so we looked in the gift shop and found this great swim shirt which would also serve as her souvenir from our swim:

Universal Sony_7044a.jpg Universal Sony_7045a.jpg

Dolphins Plus offers a few different programs. We'd reserved the full swim which is 60+ minutes in the water with the dolphins. I'd also paid for the photo package since I'd be in the water and not able to take any of my own pics. It's outrageously overpriced but since you're already paying through the nose for the swim, you have to have the pics!

There were quite a few families there from other countries - France and Denmark and one other that I just can't remember. The trainers seemed to speak enough French and German to be understood and I saw some parents translating for their children. We were divided up into groups of 6 and assigned to a trainer then those 6 were divided into A and B. Much to Boo's dismay, we were in group B which meant we would be 2nd group in the water. I didn't mind because we got to watch the other groups and get an idea what to expect. Boo was literally vibrating with eagerness while waiting our turn. When it finally came, we climbed down the ladder off the dock into the lagoon. Water was about 12 feet deep according to the trainer. Our dolphins were Elvis and Leo. They were adorable. Elvis had a bit of a crush on me and kept breaking his training to come over and nudge me. When that happened I would have to cross my arms and put my hands under my armpits which I was told was the signal to "reset". Once Elvis figured out that he was not going to get away with anything, we were able to get things moving. First the dolphins swam over to us and we got to rub their bellies and then they splashed at us with their tails. Then we got to... you know, this would be easier to show than to tell:
