DH and I are planning on taking the Xceret excursion on the Fantasy. I've read a lot of references on this board to the ferry that needs to be taking to get there and the concensus seems to be that the ferry isn't a good experience. Why is the ferry not a good experience.

How funny you ask. I was just reading on another forum today that some people have never had a bad experience on the ferry. Most people complain about the choppy water. Just be sure to take bonine or the like and you shouldn't have any problems.

We've taken the ferry to the mainland several times, and maybe a third of the time, it's been very rough. People getting sea sick in the seriously choppy waters and throwing up, crying children, insufficient bathrooms, less than pleasant odor. If you're not sensitive to motion sickness, it may not be personally bad for you, but it may be bad enough for other people to make it unpleasant for everyone. ;)

It isn't awful every time. However, the last time we did it, hmm, maybe 5 years ago now, it was an bad enough experience that we haven't gone back. It was a hot day, the water was very rough, and we (and many of the others onboard) were just miserable.

It's also about a 45 minute ride in each direction. When you're tired after a long day on shore, it can feel like forever. Particularly if it the ferry is bouncing all over the place and children are screaming around you.

    1. The waters tend to turn choppy in the afternoon, when you'll be coming back. The ferry is 'fast' and this can make for a bouncy ride.

    2. The ferry is not the type where you move around especially if the waters are rough. Rather there are rows of airline type seats. Depending on the time of the year you are sitting with a lot of wet and/or hot people - results of their tours. Some may feel closed in . .

    3. Some folks may have had too much libation . . .

    4. I've often seen 'peddlers' allowed on the return trips, selling stuff during the ride to the captive audience . . .

think of it as riding the New York subway for 45 minutes at evening rush hour on a work day....

Our ride TO the mainland was fine - fast, smooth, no problem. However, on the ride home - totally different experience. People throwing up everywhere, kids, adults - the workers were passing out barf bags - there's no air moving, you can go outside to escape it - it was bad.
