Can anyone here tell me about Pompano or Fort Lauderdale?

We are thinking of staying somewhere else for a week after some time at Disney. We did St. Pete with side trips to Venice and Sarasota in 2003 and are looking for somewhere different for this year.

We have 7 nights at Disney, then one week off, then another 7 nights at Disney...

What is there to do in the area? Can you recommend any activities? Would you pick Pompano or Fort Lauderdale? Why or why not?

We are looking at a lot of auctions on skyauction for these areas. Anyone have any experience with any properties in the area?

We were going to go to Naples for the week but since my parents won't be there this year due to building onto their house, no sense going there until next year when they will be there.

We are a couple (33 and 36) who do not drink or gamble much. We like the sea and boat tours. We want to relax after the busy summer we have here at the motel...

Anything you can say will be welcomed...Thanks :hyper2:

We live in Boca Raton, which is just north of Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale. There really isn't much to do in Pompano Beach. The beach areas are along A1A. Most of the activity is where the 2 big piers are, one at Commercial Blvd., and one at Hillsboro Blvd. We like to walk out on the pier but really not much to do if you aren't into sunning on the beach. There are some very small shops around the two piers, and not a lot of restaurants.

I think there is more to do in Fort Lauderdale. Lots of shopping and restuarants. There are water taxis and intracoastal cruises. We like to take the sightseeing cruises from the Las Olas Riverfront Marketplace (954-267-3699, http://www.goriverwalk.com). On the intracostal cruise you get to see Fort Lauderdale - the Venice of America Tour. You see lots and lots of spectacular mansions, close up views of the cruise ships, mega yachts, beautiful scenery, etc. The intracoastal cruise is air conditioned and narrated by the Captain. Besides the Riverfront Marketplace, there are museums, the Las Olas shopping district, and the famous Fort Lauderdale beachfront. "Where the Boys Are" was filmed in there. There is also the fancy Galleria Mall, close to the beach area.

There is also an outlet mall in Sunrise, Florida (about 15 miles west of Fort Lauderdale). It is huge, lots of great shops and a Disney Character Premier shop!

If you need any more info, send me a PM - I would be glad to answer any questions. I'm actually new to posting on the boards although I have been a lurker for a long time. I have enjoyed your posts - I remember you from your picture!

Just make sure you call the hotel & ask for specifics about the area around the hotel and the area you have to drive through to get there. Florida is very funny 1 block can be gorgeous the next block slums.

Not really if you stick to the A1A beach area.

If you decide to go to the Sawgrass outlet mall, you could take Sunrise Blvd., all the way from Fort Lauderdale to the Sawgrass. It is a straight shot all the way east (ocean) to the west (everglades) down Sunrise to the Sawgrass. Sunrise Blvd. it is a busy, big street but you would go thru some bad areas. Not anything bad enough that would keep me from driving there.

Sounds great...Sounds like Ft. Lauderdale wins...We would love the boat tour...

What is there to do in Boca Raton? We love to do driving trips every 2nd day so we want to explore a lot.

Thanks for all the help... :dog2:

I love Fort Lauderdale. The beaches are beautiful, there are tons of excellent restaurants and Los Olas Blvd - great shopping and restaurants. It is just so beautiful there. One of my favorite places period.

From Fort Lauderdale, you could drive north on A1A thru Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, up to West Palm Beach. The A1A drive is beautiful for the whole drive. That would be nice. Boca Raton has Mizner Park for very fancy shopping/restaurants. Boca has some of the nicest beaches and parks along the ocean. Boca did not allow the condo canyons to take over and spoil the ocean views like other cities and has preserved much of its its beach access for the public. We have great beach parks!!

You could always drive south to Key West! From where I live in Boca it is 200 miles to Key West and 200 miles to WDW. I just came back from a trip to Key West and had a great time. The drive to Key West is one of the "great drives" you hear about. Lots of bridges with spectacular views on both sides. Great seafood restaurants in Key West, too! :Pinkbounc

My folks live on beach in Pompano and I say skip it. Truly a residential area of retired folks. Nothing to do - ask my kids. I do not care for inland Pompano. Ft Lauderdale will give you lots of options for activity. Quite a few boat tours, even a huge speed boat that does the intercoastal and then tears along beach in the ocean. If you like to shop then Sawgrass is the way to go. We plan all day there with Rainforest Cafe for lunch. Boca has a great beach - Red Reef Park. The parking area is even covered in trees with picnic area. The beach is private with huge dunes covered in trees. There is a man made reef - you can snorkle feet off the beach. I mean within 15 feet of the waterline you see the fish. Colorful fish. We go for the day, stopping at the subway for sandwiches. You need water socks, the reef is sharp (like concrete drippings). Also look at Butterfly World if you want to see a bazzillion up close butterflies and humming birds. Nice half day visit (do in am while it is cooler). Just north of Pompano area off highway. And there is plenty to do in Miami just down the street.

Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach is a nice "drive thru" animal park. I also vote for the beach in Ft Lauderdale.
