At the Boardwalk now - is black mold that common?

We are currently in the Boardwalk and there is black mold all over the vent in the bathroom. Last time we stayed here we ran into the same situation with black mold all over the vent in that bathroom. We have stayed at the Boardwalk many times and have never seen it before our last trip. We expressed our concern and after going back and forth with a manager she finally agreed to move us the following morning (reluctantly). I waited until the end of the trip to grab a day manager that was on schedule. I wanted to wait till the end of the trip so they would genuinely hear my concern and not think I was fishing for a free cupcake. I explained to him the situation and how poorly it was handled. He then thanked me for bringing it to his attention, but then he went on to explain that this was a common occurrence in Florida and people just live with it down here. I thought that was odd, but since we were checking out I didn't think too much into it.

Here we are six months later and again, our room has mold. You can see it in the picture below. The couple of people who I have mentioned this to (one being a Florida resident that we know) said this was common for Florida, but NOT acceptable. If there is mold in a house when it is inspected it would never pass inspection.

So now I am at a crossroad. The DW wants to complain and have us moved out of this room. I really do not feel like dealing with the fight I had last time to get them to move us. I know the Boardwalk must be sold out this week so if we do move it will probably be a different resort. That is fine, but again, still such a hassle when we are checking out Saturday anyway.

What do you think we should do? It is just DW and I, we do not have children.

Thanks!

I would ask to me moved. I live about 20 miles from the parks in a 70 year old house and I have never encountered anything like that. I would say that you have major allergies to the mold if they give you a hassel about it, but really they shouldn't. That's disgusting!

It is hot and humid there, it probably grows like crazy. Is that mold or mildew? Just wondering. We were at the BWV a few weeks ago and didn't see anything like that.

i noticed mildew at CBR last year but NOTHING like that. I would NEVER stay at a resort with black mold. Not even a question to put your family at risk like that. They shouldn't give you any trouble either. I would say something and have them come take a look at it.

I'm not sure if that is black mold or mildew either, but not acceptable in a hotel room, ESP one your paying $$$ to stay in. I would also forward that photo to the guest relations e mail.

I luckily didn't notice that in our BWV room a couple weeks ago. I have seen that in the past though, not just at BWV/BWI, but at other Disney resorts and other hotels around the country. It's gross! I'm not sure what the best thing to do about it is, either, and I wonder if they'd even come clean it if you ask. Unacceptable, but really not that uncommen.

Just went down to the desk and spoke to a very nice Manager named Lorenzo. I explained my issue and he is looking into moving us.

Thanks for the posts, not sure why I thought we should just live with it. Maybe because I didn't want to admit the wife was right?

Glad you talked to them. The quicker you let them know there is a problem the better.

Op that is a problem they should be aware of. But I'm glad you went forward to let them know about it.

Thanks again all. We're heading to Animal Kingdom now. They were able to get us a 1br Savannah view. We're coming from a 1br preferred view at the BWV. We will deal. Looking forward to checking out Kidani. Hate that we're so far away from Epcot and F&W.

This is probably mildew and not stachybotrys (black mold). When people take long hot showers and don't let the exhaust fan run, you are going to get mildew, especially if they have the AC set to cold. The housekeepers should wipe down the vents. All it takes is a little bleach and water solution.

Alright, so the drama continues. Got to Kadani (absolutely gorgeous) and checked in. They had us in a standard view. Grabbed Eric the manager here and showed him the picture if the mold. He understood my concern and was able to get us into a 1br Savannah view. Stinks to be so far away from the Epcot area, but I am glad we were forced to check this place out. We are so used to the old BWV rooms that this is a NICE change!! Two bathrooms!! That alone is great!

Thanks again all

Deb & Bill, I think you're right. Looks like mildew, not black mold. Still housekeeping should take care of properly cleaning.

I agree with the other posters that it is mildew as opposed to black mold. Still, it shouldn't be there. A quick wipe with a bleach solution is all it would take to clean it.

We live in FL and have no mildew or mold anywhere in our home. It doesn't grow any faster here than it did up north. With my allergies and asthma, I would quickly detect the slightest bit of mold in the air even if it was not visible.

Glad you got moved. I would have done the same thing.

It does look like mildew to me as well. BUT...I have family that lives in Pompano Beach, right on the ocean, and my ds lives in Tampa, close to the Bay. Neither of them has that in their bathrooms!!! So, while it may be an issue in Florida, it isn't something that you should be expected to just 'live with'!!
Housekeeping can easily clean that...spray bottle of bleach water. Easy. And it is preventative..the more it's done, the less mildew will occur.
