We are taking the 5/16 Western cruise and are interested in any reviews of the Mexican Cuisine Workshop and Tasting. Has anyone done this excursion? If so, did you feel it was worth spending 5 - 5.5 hours on?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

It was absolutely, hands down, without exception, the best thing we have ever done!!!

The guide/chef was amazing with a great personality. Free drinks and it was very informative. The food was great and it was so much fun doing it. After the meal, the time at the beach was awesome.

I'd do it again tomorrow if I could.

What time does it start and what time would you get back to the ship? We may make ressies for Palo that night?

I would love to do it, but the girls will be with us, so we'll have to wait for another time.

Thanks for the indorsement. How much time did you get to spend on the beach, they really don't talk about it much in the description.

I wanna go with you! Unfortunately DH will be diving and I don't have the heart to leave the kids on the ship while I am having fun in Mexico. I hope it is a blast!

I did the workshop in Dec. 2007. As opposed to rewriting everything (it has been awhile and I don't remember everything), I found the review I wrote last time. Here it is!

OK everyone....I'm back from my trip! I kept this excursion while my parents went horseback riding and I'm so glad I did! It was a great excursion that I would definitely do again should I ever be in Cozumel.

First off, I did take photos of the excursion but have not loaded them to my computer or to photobucket, so once I do, I will post pics of everything.

We met at 10:45 at Sessions, and were led off the ship to meet someone from the Playa Mia resort. There were 6 of us on the excursion from Disney, as well as more from other cruises. All together, there were (I think) 17 people in the entire class. After a short taxi ride (about 20 or so minutes), we arrived at Playa Mia. It was quite a beautiful resort. Since the class before us was not quite done, we waited in the buffet/bar area under a huge tent (which reminded all of us Disney dorks of the Cirque du Soleil building at Downtown Disney). We were told that we could get drinks from the bar, but we weren't sure if we had to pay so we all skipped it.

Once we finished waiting (about 15 minutes...we spent the whole time taking photos of the area and talking) we were escorted to the building where we were to cook. It was a very nice room with windows on 3 walls overlooking the ocean and beach area. We were broken up into groups of 4, since each table had room for 4. One quick thing to mention...if you have trouble standing for an extended period of time, you should pass this excursion. We stood the whole cooking time (about 2 hours). You might be able to use a chair or stool, but I didn't see any available while we were there.

The very first thing you do in cooking is...........(as all the Disney people screamed) wash hands!!! WRONG!!! We silly people were all trained on the Magic that we cleaned up before eating. Nope...you place your drink orders! They had rum punch, pina coladas, margaritas, beer, etc. All were included in the excursion and they offered refills. After we finally cleaned up, we started cooking. The first thing we did was dessert, since it had to cool in the fridge before serving. It was a sweet rice pudding layered with sugar cookies with rum and lime zest in the dough. After preparing that, we started on the entree. It was grouper with a mango-chilie sauce, garneshed with a stuffed pepper. We only partly cooked the fish in the pan since it needed to finished in the oven. If you don't like fish, they offered chicken. However, as I was talking to a couple on one of the Carnival cruises, the wife told me she hated fish but loved the grouper. It was the first time she ever actually enjoyed fish.

After finishing the fish, we moved back to the dessert so that we could plate it. They brought back out the rice pudding (which was cooled) and the sugar cookies (which were baked). We learned about decorating with sauces and creating designs with them. Again, once we finished, the took them back to the kitchen to place in the fridge to stay fresh until we ate them. Lastly, we worked on the appetizer. We created sopes, which are very thick tortillas that are hollowed out and filled with beans and other ingredients (can't remember off the top of my head) and topped with lettuce, cheese, and cream. Once we finished plating, we were led upstairs to the dining area (again, overlooking the ocean and beach) were we ate the sopes. All the dishes were paired with Mexican wine. I must say, they were very good. After that, the entrees were brought out. After the finished the fish in the oven, they added rice to plate as well. Again, a very good dish. Lastly, the dessert. And again, very good.

During the actually cooking time, a picture was taken of all the people at your table, along with the chef and sous chef. In typical Disney style, the photos were printed out and available for puchase (as they were pouring more wine in your glass, no doubt). However, I did purchase the photo and frame, which came out to (I think) $21. So after the workshop and tasting (which is very filling), we had full use of the resort. We had about 45 minutes until the taxi came to take us back to the port, so 5 of us headed to the beach to lay out. Needless to say, after 2 rum punches, a tequilla shot, and 2 glasses of wine, all I wanted to do was lay down. After the nice rest, we all headed back to the front where the taxi was waiting for us and we headed back to the port.

I am so glad that I did this excursion. It might be that we were all Disney dorks, or maybe it's the magic that Disney brings, or maybe I'm just niave, but I really believed the 6 of us from the Magic bonded somewhat on the excursion. And that's something that's important to make any excursion enjoyable. I would highly suggest this excursion to anyone visiting Cozumel who is even somewhat interested in cooking. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Disneycruise 05, Were the drinks served with filtered ice?

I heard you can get sick from non filtered ice in Mexico. Either way, I hope you didn't get sick.

Thanks!
I would assume that the drinks were with filtered ice. Like Heather said in her post, resorts have to use filtered ice or they would go out of business very quickly. As far as I know, none of us on the tour got sick afterwards from bad water or ice at the resort.

My grandson (14) would love this excursion. He loves to cook. Do they offer non-alcoholic drinks?
They do! I know that Luis (the chef) offered sodas, and I believe also water.

Wow, this sounds excellent and is soooo up my alley because I love to cook (I also love the tequila/wine part of the experience!!!). I know the rest of your family went horsebackriding while you cooked, but did anyone else's family hang on that beach during the excursion? Or did they pretty much all go elsewhere? Thanks! I'm glad you got to go after all your investigating!!!
Everyone that went on the excursion participated in the class, and I know that none of their families went to the resort. However, I don't see why one couldn't get a taxi to the Playa Mia resort, pay the entrance fee (there a 3 different "levels" of entrance...all of which I believe cover full use of the facilities and the food buffet) and hang out on the beach while others would be in the class. It certainly is a relaxing area and I would love to go back some time just to relax.

Hey, William! Did you have Veronica (I think that is her name) and her mom on your excursion? Veronica is a CM that had just finished her time on board and had taken her mom on a cruise. We did the tequila tasting with them and had a lot of fun. We saw them on pub night and they had mentioned doing a cooking excursion and drinking entirely too much.
Hi, Cristi!!! Yes, Veronica and her mom, Nadia were on the tour. They were a blast. Luis did have somewhat of a crush on Veronica. Then again, she was the youngest female in the class and he looked all of 15 years old. It was great having a cast member on the tour with us. She was talking about life on the ship and the new itineraries to St. Croix and Tortola. I believe she is both a life guard and works at the shore excursions desk.

As soon as photobucket stops taking so bloody long to upload my photos (it's been 10 minutes or so and it's only uploaded 1...ugh) I'll post them so you can see the resort and what we actually made. HTH!

Hey everyone...sorry for the delay in getting pics up.

This was the tent that we all waited in for the class to begin. Inside were a few bars, as well as the food buffet.

This was the food station that we worked at. It was a four top (four people per station). The grill and stove tops are all gas instead of electric.

This is the appetizer we made...sopes. They are uber good!
100_3404.jpg

This was the main dish...grouper with a garnish of a stuffed pepper. This was before we gave them the plates so that they could finish the fish in the oven and add rice and a little bit of slaw.

The last course was the sweet rice pudding and crisp sugar/rum/lime cookies. Again, very good.

Lastly, this is Luis and Veronica. See my post above, as well as Crisiti's. As you can see, Luis can't be older than 15. Sweet and funny, but looks way younger than me.
