I feel like such a Disney newbie writing this but here goes. For our upcoming trip in Nov my folks want to do a day at Universal Studios and 6 days at Disney. I just need some advice on how to work this out with park passes and the dining plan. Can we stay 7 nights at a Disney resort with a 6 day pass to Disney Parks with 6 days of a dining plan and then do 1 day at Universal?

Southwest has an option to add a 1 day pass to Universal with transportation from our Disney hotel.

Normally we just do a full week at Disney so this has never come up for us before.

The dining plan is tied to the number of nights you stay. Your park tickets are not. So with a 7-night stay you can get park passes from 2-10 days. You will have the dining plan for your entire 7-night stay.

So just to clarify I could get a 4 day park ticket and still have the DDP for 7 days?

You have a few options on what you can do. You could book a regular Disney package for 7 nights, and if you do the dining plan that would also be for 7 as well (it isn't changeable) and then for the day you want to do Universal you would just taxi or rent a car. We have rented cars at the Dolphin before and it's pretty easy. You'll probably end up having an extra sitdown meal leftover so you can do a double TS credit dinner one of the other nights to use it up. By doing Universal during your Disney stay it allows you to still be able to take ME to and from the airport.

Another option, just do a six night package at Disney and completely checkout of your resort and go to Universal for the last night of the week. You would still have to rent a car or take a taxi to get there, but it would allow you to stay at a Universal resort which would give you front of the line access (this is MAJOR in my opinion). Then the next day you would either taxi to the airport or you'd still have your rental car. You can rent a car from the Dolphin for 2 days and return it at the airport.

Our last trip we did a day at Kennedy Space Center in the middle of our trip. We had a room at POP for 8 nights. 7 day tickets to Disney and 8 nights of the dining plan. We just took a day off from Disney and traveled to KSC for the day. Since Disney tickets are good for 14 days from the first use and the DDP is tied to your room reservation it makes it real easy to take a day trip somewhere else.

This is correct in that the DDP goes by the number of nights you stay and not ticket days, so you can't stay 7 nights and only have the DDP for 6. With that said, just to clarify on the tickets, you only need a minimum 1 day base ticket when paying for the DDP and a minimum of a 2 day base if you get free dining.

Thanks for clarifying. I was going under the assumption of Free Dining. I guess I forget that people do actually pay for it.:rotfl2:

No problem :). I wasn't even going to mention it as it looks like the OP is wanting more than just the 1 day ticket, but I thought if someone else read the thread and only wanted to buy the minimum required, it would help them out ;). LOL on forgetting that people do pay for the DDP :rotfl:.
