Am I crazy for saying no to some pixie dust? Has anyone else did anything this crazy?

My wife and I are going to Disney next week to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. This is the first time we will be there without our children. I decided to splurge and book a club level room at the Grand Floridian. Well I just received a call from Disney. They wanted to upgrade our 1 bedroom king size room to a suite. One bedroom with a king bed, one with 2 queens, plus a living room and a partial MK view and I said NO thank you! I must be certifiable!!!!

I just felt guilty taking that upgrade and wasting all that space. Like I said it is only my wife and I. I told the gentlemen who called to give it to someone who could use it more that we can.

Please tell me someone else out there has done something this "stupid". Now, the real question is should I let my wife know what I did. :rolleyes1

P.S. Thank you Disney for being so awesome. I really wished I could have used it.

1. I'm with you.
We don't spend any time in our room at WDW (other than to sleep and get cleaned up.)
Let someone who wants/needs that room have it.

2. In my case, my wife feels the same as I do about the accommodations fitting the vacation style.

I'm right there with you. I would have said no to that upgrade, as well, if it was just my husband and me. We don't need all those beds! And some parents with kids in tow might REALLY enjoy having their own room. ;)

What you could do, though, is buy some flowers, or chocolates, or a little gift for your wife and ship it to the resort ahead of time. Or hide it in your luggage. Or splurge even more and get an in room celebration for her. I know I'd be completely floored if my husband ever surprised me like that.

Thanks for agreeing with me.

Agreed, I have 4 children and that is how I was thinking. If I had our children with us it would have have been worth it, but since we don't I would be just wasting it. And I do have some surprises up my sleeve.

Chances like that don't come up very often you probably should have taken it.

I'm sure it was a once in a lifetime chance that I passed up but I just couldn't do it.

Sometimes you need to say thank you and accept the gift. That room may sit empty now or they may give it to a family but they may also offer it to another couple who will also just end up "wasting" the space. I don't see how it is wasting the space if it was just going to sit empty anyways. Chances are they offered it because they were predicting it was going to sit empty and they needed your room because it was in demand.

I would have taken it. We were upgraded once from a Garden Suite at the Boardwalk to a 2-bedroom Suite and gladly accepted it. It was just by husband and I and it was wonderful.

I think it was very nice of you to decline and let someone else have it -- I'm sure they won't let is sit empty, but will upgrade someone else. I probably would have taken it if I was otherwise going to be in a single room, but since you already have a suite you already have plenty of room. Have fun! Hubby and I are coming for our first kid-free visit in two weeks!!

Once at our checkin at POR, they told me we had been upgraded to the Royal Guest Rooms. I declined, and asked them to keep us in our standard view room in Alligator Bayou. There were only
four of us, but I still was glad to have the pull down trundle bed so the kids could have some extra space!

I think your decision is quite commendable as others have mentioned. Now if they had offered to move you to a room of the same size/type as yours, but with a theme park view, that would have been some pixie dust to not pass up on!

This is what I though too, offered them a upgrade cause their current room was in demand.

I would have taken the upgrade. Its nice to have a partial park view, nice. Also agree this was a once in a life time chance. Also don't tell your wife unless you for sure she would have done the same thing o_O

Do. Not. Tell. Your. Wife.

That is a Fantasy Dream that you just gave up!!!!! What a wonderful 10th anniversary present they were giving you! I have a feeling I know what suite that was. We stayed at GF a couple of years ago, and we were thrilled because they upgraded us from a standard room to a Theme Park view room- my dream room. I stood there at check in with tears rolling down my face I was so excited. The guy told me- oh you don't even know what you are missing- I was trying to get you somewhere even better, but I couldn't. I thought we had hit the absolute jackpot. My friend went two weeks afterward- being one to always outdo everyone :)- without even being asked, his 3 person family was upgraded to a GF suite. He promptly texted me video and pictures. It was amazing. There was even a piano. They weren't even celebrating anything. It was their 1st WDW trip ever. Needless to say- he was hooked. They have been back 2 or 3 times since- no upgrade, but they still love it!

You sound like a very nice person for declining it and hoping it went to someone who would get more use out of it, but if I was your wife I think you would be hearing about my displeasure about that one for years!

With all the families checking into that resort every single day, I'm sure that room won't go empty!

And if it goes to another couple instead of a family, so what?

I don't like having "more" just because it's there. I like having "enough". I'm basically Goldilocks, rejecting the biggest beds, looking for one that's just right. :)

Maybe that other theoretical couple always likes to have the biggest and best of everything. In which case, awesome! Everyone's happy.

I would probably have done the same thing, given you already had a suite. Now if you just had a plain ole room on a regular floor, you betcha I would have snatched that puppy up. DS and I were upgraded to CL once at CR and we took it but it was just to a regular room, it was nice being on club level since little boys can eat their weight in food.

I would have taken it, and in fact something similar happened to me. I went to New Orleans in 2013 and was staying 2 nights. My first night the AC was wonky and the room was really hot. The next morning I very politely and good humoured mentioned it at reception. The lady was really nice and apologetic and I was switched rooms. When I unlocked the door to the new room, I found I had been upgraded to a mini suite, with an extra room with a sofa, second TV and dining table. I was a solo traveller and didn't need the extra room and spent the minimum amount of time at the hotel, but it was really nice to get something I wasn't expecting. Just be glad that you have been given something extra, too many times people complain that nothing nice ever happens to them.

I think that it only qualifies as pixie dust if you are comfortable with what's offered. so you did the right thing for you. I live in fear of my hotel being overbooked usually a moderate and being offered a move to a deluxe. Most people will think I'm mad but I book moderate because I want moderate. I was a little unhappy at being upgraded to river view at POFQ one year as I don't like hearing the boats, Yup I know it's crazy but I like to be comfortable. so I don't think your crazy at all.

I don't think you're crazy. What you did has allowed someone else to enjoy an upgrade that you would not have appreciated.

OP,don't feel bad-during Year of a Million Dreams, some Guests actually TURNED DOWN the ultimate upgrade-a night in the CINDERELLA CASTLE DREAM SUITE!!!!:)

It is unlikely that they will upgrade a family when they can upgrade a couple. There is a lot less housekeeping work for two people than for 4 or 5. Some other couple is going to get the upgrade you declined.

What you did was noble, but I'm not that noble and if my DH declined such an upgrade, I wouldn't want to know.
