Looking at Grand Californian resale, it's almost double the price of, let's say, animal kingdom. Wouldn't it make more sense to go with AKV? Am I missing something? I understand the home resort advantage, but would it really be worth double?

If you want to stay at GC often, then yes. For us, even though DL was being visited way more often than WDW when we bought, we have zero interest in GC. It's my (and to a certain extent DH and DS though DS's memory is hazy) least favorite resort and we would far prefer to stay elsewhere. So it would have made no sense for us to buy there.
