We are going on a 3 day Bahama cruise in February. We have 3 boys (ages 9, 6, and 3). I've been looking at the Nassau excursions and the prices seem outrageous! Would love to do the Atlantis waterpark day but can't afford that :( Would it be a waste of a visit to Nassau to just stay on ship? Or maybe just get off and check out straw market and get back on ship?

Also, what activities for boys are must do's? Not sure they will let me leave them at kids club but we will see :)

Stay on the ship and enjoy the less crowded atmosphere. There is plenty to do while on board, and you have already paid for it! We sailed on the dream in 2011, our first cruise and first time to Nassau. We didn't get off the ship, not even to visit the straw market and had a great time on the ship! We did look down at all the people standing in line to go to their excursions and said "glad that's not us!" ::yes::

Especially since you are doing a 3 day cruise, you will want to enjoy as much ship time as you can get! I would totally reccommend staying on the ship in Nassau and enjoying your beach time at Castaway Cay.

My cousin and her family have done the 3 day once, and are doing it (and we're tagging along) in 2 weeks. I believe they stayed on the ship in Nassau last time, and are doing the same this time. They have NO regrets.

My little family is going to get off the ship, and just walk around local to the port. We'll probably visit the pirate museum, which I've heard is fun for kids, and walk around just a little more. If I can figure it out, I want to set foot on some sand there, too. There are a couple free beaches, and I hear Junkanoo beach isn't expensive and is nearby. Yikes, almost no time left, really have to get that worked out!

Then we'll be happy to go back on the ship.

We have been to Nassau twice, going again in March. The first time we did a dolphin encounter at Blue Lagoon which was amazing. Last time (Jan 2013) we did the walking tour you can find on Trip Advisor, which takes you to the Queen's staircase, Fort Fincastle and the pirate museum, as well as the free beaches. Our boys 7.5&5 yrs) loved the fort and the pirate museum, although the $4 fort entry was nice compared to the $36 to get into the pirate museum ;). Because we were just there, we will be staying on the ship when we return in March, but do get off an explore a bit, especially any areas away from the port. We have found people to be very friendly and helpful.

I know I have read about another option for the Atlantis waterpark by booking a hotel room at the Comfort Suites, a neighboring hotel. I think I remember it being around $220. When we make it back there, we will try that, I think.

Might be a WAY more affordable way to try it out! :)

I agree with staying on the ship. But if you want Atlantis, check booking a room at the Comfort Suites next door to it. In doing so, you get armbands for your party to go to the water park in Atlantis included in the room rate. The cost is sometimes 1/2 of excursion rate per person depending on the season. I have done this several times with no problems.

I'm going to get off first thing and do the walking tour then coming back to get a massage on the ship. I have never been to Nassau and I think I will regret it if I don't get off the ship

My family and I enjoyed our walk through Nassau last year and I look forward to visiting again someday. However, for your young children, staying on the ship may be your best bet.

    Enjoy your cruise!

    :)

This is our 2nd cruise to Bahamas. Last year we did the Comfort Inn/Atlantis water park and I'am glad we did it, to say yes we have been to Atlantis. It wa much cheaper for us a family of 5 with the Comfort Inn then through DCL. We saved almost $600.00:yay: This March the kids are staying on the boat and DH and I are just walking through Straw Market for a bit. We had though a 5 day and now 4 day cruise. I think for a 3 day cruise, it is very short and with young kids you may want to experience the ship more.

Can you put more than 4 people in Comfort Suites? We are a family of 5.

If you're cheap like us, we spent a good part of the day going over to Paradise Island and walking up the beach to the back part of Atlantis and only spent $ on the taxi and some drinks. Link on the trip report below - it explains how we did it.

no you must reserve 2 rooms, it was still cheaper then going through DCL though.

I am leaning more towards a day on the boat...seems like a lot of money for essentially 6-7 hours tops!

We did the Pirate Museum last year. If was corny, but cool...the kids loved it. pirate: We walked around, bought rum cakes and shopped at Del Sol. They carry neat products, that change colors in the sun. :beach:

We've also done the day at Atlantis. It was okay, but not a must do...;)
