my husband and I are wanting to go to WDW for our 10 year anniversary (no kids with us) in January 2017. We are DL veterans, but want to try out WDW.

We do have a limited budget so we would stay at a value resort and go for about 5 park days with park hoppers. Do value resorts have king beds? I only see 2 doubles/queens online.

I know we won't be able to do everything, but we want to do things that are not at DL for sure. Then of course the classics. Any suggestions of what not to miss?

Since we would be going in an off peak time, will there be night time shows during the week or only on weekends?

What's a good fp+ strategy? We typically arrive early for RD and do rides while lines are short. Then grab fp and go from there at DL. I have to admit, fp+ kind of freaks me out. What is a good strategy?

Any other tips for DL regulars doing a one and only trip to WDW would be great. Thanks!

Start by reading easywdw.com. Find out the best days for each park. Then decide which nighttime shows you want to see. Then assign parks to each day. Then go after FP+ and then do dinning reservations. I would recommend one TS dinner at Epcot. Give the most weight to preferred days for MK as it has the most rides.

Also read the Unofficial guide to WDW and use the code in the book to access touringplans.com. This is a bit more time consuming but is also worth it. In particular the planning of the MK days can be very dialed in if you spend a few days using the site.

Both easywdw and touringplans have touring plans. The one park that needs a touring plan the most is MK

For night shows MSEP is a must in my book. Perhaps the MK Wishes fireworks. Illuminations would be a must in my book for someone who has never done it. F! might be a pass as you have seen the DLR version. However for me I like both. In AK there will be the new ROL show.

Decide which rides you want to ride and which you want to skip.

For me I skip Dinosaur in AK, Mission Space Orange in Epcot. I just don't enjoy the rides. I also skip almost all of future land in Epcot except for SOARIN and TT. It is basically an out of date science fair??? Others may disagree.

Do see living with the land in Epcot.

I would for sure do TOT at DHS as it is better then the DLR version. I would also do Kali River Rapids (note you may want a change of clothes or very quick dry (non-white) clothes. At this time of year there is no shame in using a poncho.

You might consider skipping SOARIN in EPCOT and TSMM in DHS. Doing so can greatly simplify touring plans. However if they do fit in there is no reason to miss them...

Decide on coasters. If you ride SCREAMIN and HSM at DLR then you should also ride RNR coaster in DHS and EE in AK.

FP+ strategies for the parks vary and AK will change with the new ROL show (perhaps sort of like the WOC show in DLR)

Basically one possible MK FP+ strategy:

Rope drop every day and FP+ starting at the two hour mark. Use the phone app to move FP+ times up as you board the first FP+ attraction. Go for 6-7 or more FP+ Ride other rides outside of FP+. this is a great park for evening EMH if it is offered. Tune these days in touringplans.com to reduce the amount of walking and waiting in line and increase the amount of time on rides.

EPCOT:

Rope drop with FP+ for TT (as you have never ridden it) and hit SOARIN first then use FP+ for TT. If you don't care about SOARIN you can arrive at the park at any time with a FP+ for TT. Learn the loaction of SOARIN as it does not have an exterior building like DLR.

AK:

Currently no FP+ is needed except for perhaps Kali in the afternoon. However since you are going during the winter you will not likely need FP+. With ROL this may all change. However currently it is possible to rope drop AK without FP+ and then leave for another park with a FP+ for that park in hand.

DHS:

Not a lot of rides here. However FP+ TSMM if you want to ride.

One possibility is:

2 Days MK
1 Day Epcot
1 Day DHS
1 Day AK

However you have hoppers...

You could

1.5 days MK
1.5 Days Epcot
1 Day DHS
1 Day AK

or

1.5 days MK
1.5 days Epcot

DHS hoping to AK
AK hopping to DHS.

There are many other choices.

I would spend one full non-hopping day in MK
I would hop only once a day
and I would not hop every day.

AN exception might be Rope Drop Epcot with SOARIN FP. Ride TT in single rider line and use FP+ for SOARIN before leaving for DHS and then hopping to MK for night and late night EMH. I would hop a second time for evening EMH. Try not to hop for meal reservations. Eat in the park you are at.

the values do have some king rooms but they are limited you can request one but it is not guaranteed. As for the what not to miss I am not familiar with Disneyland do I do not know what all attractions are there so sorry can't help you with that one.

yes there will be night time shows during the week

If you go at rope drop book your FP+ for later in the morning or afternoon

I don't know if you planned for any days off from the parks but you should there is a lot of things to see outside of the parks. You can go to Disney Springs, take a stroll on the boardwalk, tour around all the different resorts, ride the monorail and even the boat over to the boardwalk. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Small detail in the grand scheme of your plan but double and queen beds are not the same thing and I wasn't sure based on your comment format of "double/queen" if you were thinking they would be the same size. Double is fancy word for full-sized bed and U.S. size measurement says 54" X 75" or 54" X 74" whereas Queen is a size measurement of 60" X 80" (though I do not know if WDW uses standard sized beds).

As far as Value resorts go:
Suites have queen but no king
Other rooms have double beds or you can request a king (as far as I know rooms with king-sized beds are accessible rooms and therefore persons who truly need them will have priority..though I'm not completely positive the only rooms with the king beds are the accessible rooms)

If you are hitting RD then make your FP+ selections for later in the day when the crowds are heavier. That was our strategy when we went a few years ago when FP+ was in its infancy and it worked well for us.

WDW isn't like DLR with the night time show......WDW has its shows on during the week even during slower times.

WDW is a different animal than DLR. It's much larger and more spread out so we would take an afternoon break back at the resort to enjoy the pool.

Have a great trip!

First of all, there are no off peak times anymore. Parks are crowded year around now. Second you can plan on doing almost everything that you want to multiple times. Just as many have said, plan on being their early and not be in the Sunday stroll mode. The most important thing to remember is, plan on wearing very comfortable shoes, because you will be walking about 20 miles per day literally.

mesaboy2 has a new FP Superthread with lots of tips: http://www.disboards.com/threads/the-fastpass-frequently-asked-questions-superthread.3491680/

Because you are used to rope dropping, plan on doing the same and scheduling your first FP for the late morning.

If you watched the Electrical Parade when it was at DL, then it is still the same. If you've watched Paint the Night at DL, then MSEP may appear outdated or nostalgic. We always like watching MSEP.

When California friends visit WDW for the first time, my CM friend has a basic must-do list which includes:

Restaurants:
Be our Guest, SciFi, 50's Prime Time, Sanaa, Jiko, Beaches and Cream

Attractions:
MK: Philharmagic, Mine Train, BTMRR
Epcot: Test Track to see how it differs from RSR, Living with the Land
DHS: ToT, RnRC, Fantasmic! - it's quite different than DL's version
AK: Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safari, Dinosaur if you want to see how it differs from Indy, Rivers of Light (show) will be open then
