Advice: DTD vs ASMu

We have booked DTD doubletree, for 3/26-3/30. I have been trying and trying, and got the ASMu (with AP discount, which I would have to buy, lol) for 3/30-4/2. We have no definitive plans to go to WDW again within a year, but it would take not much urging (but careful financial planning). I would only spend $189 more (plus loss of free breakfasts), staying in 2 connecting rms at ASMu (as long as I eventually get 3/29, lol). Is it worth it to switch to that plan and cancel the Doubletree DTD? I have never been to DTD...
I am travelling with my dh and 4 kids, and am sooooo frazzled, planning this out! Can't decide, since I have no experience with DTD. I would even factor in which time will be less busy, if it came down to that!

Oh, help!

We will have our van (we are driving from NE Ohio), so if I never get 3/29 at ASMu, I can move from DTD to there after one night. I just don't know if it's worth it!!!!

Beth

We have only stayed one night at DTD and then switched to the All Stars. It is very easy to switch, especially with your own car. I prefer to stay at Disney resorts because I like the transportation better but if it was a choice between a DTD stay and no vacation we would be happy at DTD again. One plus staying at DTD is that you are close to the crossroads and with your own car you can easily eat there if you want. A plus of ASMo is the theming and you really feel inside all the magic. Good luck whatever you decide.

I'd go with the All Stars. Especially with four kids two bathrooms would be great. I may be prejudiced but I wouldn't go to Disney if I couldn't stay on-site. There's just that Disney Magic.

You will be giving up much more by staying at a DTD hotel instead of on the property. You won't have access to Extra Magic Hour (and the evening hours are great). You will have to pay for parking each day unless you have an AP. You will have to travel to and from the parks each day in your own transportation and park the car, plus ride the tram over to the gate. At the MK you will have to then get on a monorail or boat. If you stay at AS resort, you will hop the bus and get off at the theme park, no catching a tram. If you use the Doubletree bus, you will not have the bus available as often or when you want it like you will with Disney (every 20-30 minutes for another bus).

Bring a big box of cereal along and get a jug of milk (with some ice in the sink or garbage can) and make that your free breakfast.

We stayed at the Doubletree one summer for three nights (got a great deal - $66/night - and free tickets to Sea World, but we had to check out the Hilton Grand Vacation Club for two hours one morning). It was okay, but not a Disney resort. The beds were not nearly as comfortable. The hotel had a musty odor to it.
