Okay, I'm back. Here is your friend's answer:
Beans are very good protein. They are in the vegetable category and protein category for SBD. In Phase 1 you should not eat pinto beans, navy beans, or black-eyed peas. Their GI number is a little high, but you get them again in Phase 2. So basically, yes the type of beans your friend is interested in eating are allowed on Phase 1. I was making chili in Phase 1 and still enjoy it from time to time in Phase 2.
