Disney's WILDERNESS LODGE and VILLAS INFORMATION THREAD ~2014~

FOR CURRENT WL POOL CLOSURE INFORMATION AND NEWS, PLEASE SEE POST TWO.

LINKS OF INTEREST:

Disneys Wilderness Lodge is located on Bay Lake in the Magic Kingdom Resort area.

901 Timberline Drive
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

Phone: (407) 824-3200
Fax: (407) 824-3232

~Check-in is after 3:00 for WL guests and after 4:00 for VWL guests
~Check-out is before 11:00

Opening on May 28, 1994, Disneys Wilderness Lodge was inspired by the Great American Northwest National Park lodges from the turn of the 20th century. It is an architecturally grand Disney Deluxe Resort honoring American craftsmanship and artistry, and celebrates the majesty of the unspoiled wilderness.

Designed by architect Peter H. Dominick, Jr., who also designed Disneys Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Grand Californian, the theme of being in harmony with nature winds through the lodge, inside and out. Authentic décor and genuine artifacts pay homage to ancient Native American cultures and the pioneering spirit of early American explorers.

A 10-foot totem near the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile features some famous animals. Disney character Humphrey Bear stands at the base and supports Donald Duck. Lodge legend has it that rubbing Humphrey Bear's black nose brings good luck.

Step inside the 7-story lobby, the centerpiece of Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and be awed by 2 towering totems. Each reaching 55-feet tall, the hand-carved pole, one topped with a raven, the other an eagle. Draw your eye up the 4 levels of corridors that surround the lobby and provide access to sitting nooks, terraces and nearly 730 guest rooms. The various animals, from whales to raccoons to eagles carved into these totems, depict Native American myths and legends.

While looking up towards the ceiling in the lobby of Disney's Wilderness Lodge, notice 4 massive teepee-shaped chandeliers suspended from solid Lodgepole Pine beams. Authentic rawhide, hand painted with geometric designs, stretches over the lights' structural framework. Each teepee chandelier, with its bronze and steel ring of silhouetted buffaloes and riders on horseback, weighs 600 pounds.

NEWS FROM THE LODGE

THE WILDERNESS LODGE SILVER CREEK (FEATURE) POOL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT.

9/3/14

The pool will be closed 9/3/14 - 11/27/14. Guests may use the CR, FW and VWL pools. Transportation will be provided as well as free Blizzard Beach water park passes. Guests will need to ask for the BB tickets and then they will be added to their MDX account/MB. The Trout Pass Pool Bar* and hot tubs at WL are also closed while the Silver Creek Springs pool is closed. Diznotyzed reported on 9/6 that the playground on the beach is closed. The VWL pool and hot tub remain open to all guests.

*Diznotyzed reports: "They have set up a small, sorta makeshift bar at the Villas pool near the entrance to Health Club/Restrooms."

This is how the beach looks standing on the path to the boat rental dock. It looks accessible, but bike and boat rental CM said she didn't think it was open. Bike and boat rentals are open:

Stacks of partitions on the south side of pool deck.

9/5 Photos and comments courtesy of Diznotyzed:

"There has indeed been a lot going on in the past few days, as pictured below. They started down by the marina and are working their way up to the main pool."

"Unfortunately, the playground is closed."

"Just walked back from the boat dock and they were putting up wood walls to block off the path that goes along the lake side of the pool. As of this morning it looked like the marina/bike rental and part of the beach were still open. To get from our room on the north side to the Villas pool we had to go through the building, and it seems from the south side to the boat dock will have to as well (but not necessarily through the lobby depending on room location)."

8/12/14 UPDATE/PLANS LOCATED HERE

The Wilderness Lodge feature pool closure was publicly confirmed HERE.

6/18/14: SFunaro was told that they are putting in a fence (all resort feature pools with lifeguards will have them), a sidewalk around the pool and a kid's splash area will replace the kiddie pool.

Some guests with bookings are reporting that they have called the WDTC and spoken with Guest Services regarding their reservations. Some report that they have been offered nightly room rate credits and/or alternate accommodations at other resorts. WL pool closure complaints, etc... are being discussed in THIS THREAD.

I was told the following in late June:

I spoke with a CM and I asked her what would be done for guests who are displeased with the pool rehab impacting their stay. She told me that before arrival, WL does not "own" the reservation and they can't make any monetary adjustments, but after check-in, they "own" the reservation and can work with each guest on a case by case basis. Every booking and situation is different so this is why it has to be done on a case by case basis. She said that the guest would need to speak to a manager or leader.

Reservations are dropped into the resort at about the 1-2 week point. Prior to this, the WDTC, "owns" the reservation, if you made it though them. At the time I asked in late June, the CM did not know whether the WDTC or Disney Guest Services were making or would make any monetary adjustments to reservations prior to check-in. The CMs physically located at WL are not involved with what the WDTC/TAs do before the reservation is dropped into their system. They can't really "see" that activity. Also, at the time I asked, I don't believe that the WDTC/DGS was making guest booking adjustments. I think this is something that started recently.

6/18/14: EpcotBill provided us with the following TA (Travel Agent) information:

In addition, the Silver Creek Springs Pool at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will be closed for refurbishment Sept. 3-Nov. 27, 2014. During this time, the leisure pool at The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will remain open. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit either the Main Pool at Disney’s Contemporary Resort or the Meadow Swimmin’ Pool at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Complimentary transportation will be provided to both of these neighboring resorts.

If the pool was your Client’s primary reason for choosing Disney’s Wilderness Lodge during this timeframe, please consider working with your Client to find an alternative Walt Disney World Resort hotel that will suit their needs.

6/6/14: Wilderness Lodge POOL WORK PERMITS, found online by TheLodgeLady, show "Main pool and deck area" work to be performed. The permits were filed at the end of 2013.

7/28/14: SILVER CREEK underwent a summer rehab and is now filled and running again. The lobby bridge has re-opened.

WL/DVC/RESORT-BRANDED MERCANTILE MERCHANDISE LOCATED
HERE, HERE and HERE.

According to XtraEdGe: In August, a CM said they were changing the WL logo on everything from signs to shirts.

The first and third hyperlinks above have September 2014 photos of the logo that replaced the ones pictured in the second hyperlink from July.

VWL REHAB: All villas have received a hard goods rehab that begun January 2014 and was completed at the end of March 2014.

MOST RECENTLY POSTED WL/VWL ACTIVITIES FLYER AND MOVIE SCHEDULE

Due to the pool rehab, Movies Under the Stars, err, Roof? has been relocated from the beach to the Carolwood Pacific Train Room at VWL. This is the location that used to be used during inclement weather. The movies currently begin at 7:00.

Also, the children's activities, now called "Pavillion Activities," have been relocated to just outside the Cub's Den. This month's activities begin at 1:00 and conclude with "Giant Games" starting at 3:30.

POST-REHAB

YELLOWSTONE'S SWEET VIEWS

THE YOSEMITE VICE-PRESIDENTIAL SUITE

The suite was rehabbed in 2013 so portions of the following description may be outdated. The king bed that is pictured in the 2010 Presidential Suite photos on the previous page is now in the Yosemite Suite.

The 885-square-foot Vice Presidential Suite is outfitted in upscale cowboy style featuring rawhide curtains, branding-iron towel bars, wood-paneled walls, Native American artwork, and lodgepole trim. The living area offers a distressed leather sleeper sofa, two leather easy chairs, oversized desk, Remington-style lamp, Southwestern rug, and an armoire with a flat-panel TV, DVD player, and stereo. A wooden walk-in bar is complete with swinging doors, microwave, under counter refrigerator, sink, toaster, blender, coffeemaker, and two leather barstools. The small dining room has hardwood flooring with a circular, six-person table with rustic twig chairs.

CLUB LEVEL:
THE OLD FAITHFUL CLUB

Mike, just one of the wonderful Old Faithful Club concierges.

If you have booked a club level room at Wilderness Lodge, you should receive an E-mail from the IPO (ITINERARY PLANNING OFFICE) welcoming you and inquiring about any reservations they can make for you. When they initiate contact varies. Sometimes it's soon after booking or it can be just prior to the 180 or 90-day mark. Sometimes they will attach a planning form. After you have emailed back the planning form, you then might receive another email like this:

Howdy!

Thank you for choosing Walt Disney World as your vacation destination.

We have you arriving to Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort soon and staying in our exclusive concierge club.

Attached is a copy of your itinerary thus far. Please review the itinerary and notify us of any adjustments or changes that need to be made. Any events not booked through our office will not appear on your party's itinerary.

Upon your arrival at our resort, please proceed to the Valet Desk or Curbside Cast Member. You will then be escorted directly to the Club Concierge for check-in.

Please feel free to contact us if you require any further assistance
with planning.

Happy Trails,

Walt Disney World Itinerary Planning Office
Phone: (407) 934-5348
Fax: (407) 824-3162

While the WL IPO cast members are not physically located at Wilderness Lodge, they are actually based at Disney's Polynesian, they will be your point of contact until arrival. If you havent heard from the IPO before the 180-day mark (and this can happen), you should use the email address below to initiate contact. You can contact the IPO at any time after you have booked. Make sure to include your reservation number in all correspondence with the IPO:

Wilderness.Lodge.Itinerary.Planning@disneyworld.co m

When you arrive, let the bellman or curbside greeter know you are a club level guest. If you are driving, most likely the guard will have announced your arrival. They will either instruct you to go into the lobby and check-in at the Bell Services counter, which would only occur if they are very busy or if it is before 7 AM or after 10 PM when Club Level is closed or a Club Level Curbside Greeter will greet you outside. The CM will check your name against a list, might ask you for ID, and will then call upstairs and let them know you have arrived. If someone needs to park a car, have the bellman store your luggage (if you'd like), go park the car and the curbside CM will wait to take you upstairs until your party is all together.

Once on the 7th floor, you will check-in at the concierge desk immediately to your right as you exit the elevator (between 7 AM and 10 PM)

If your room is ready, you will then be escorted to your room. If it is not ready, you will be called or texted when it is ready. It's the goal to have all guests in their room as quickly as possible. You will be given your KTTW card and/or Magic Band if you have not pre-ordered, with park tickets and dining plan loaded (if applicable) even if your room is not ready. You have full lounge access from the time you check-in until 10 PM (when the lounge closes) of your check-out day.

Club Level room number map courtesy of TheLodgeLady

The Old Faithful Club at Disney's Wilderness Lodge has a high CM-to-Guest ratio. There are only 44 Standard Club Level rooms, 4 Honeymoon Suites and two other suites on the 7th floor and 25 Deluxe rooms on floors 1-6. All 7th floor rooms have balconies with solid railings (dormer balconies). Rooms with one queen bed and one set of twin bunks are available by-request only, but can't be guaranteed.

Concierge level guests have the same amenities as non-CL guests, PLUS:

~Two robes (additional robes can be requested).

~Automatic nightly turn-down service.

~Upgraded toiletries in suites.

~IPO and concierge staff available prior to and during your visit for reservations and vacation planning assistance.

~Access to the exclusive Old Faithful Club featuring daily continental breakfast, snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, appetizers and desserts.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation via bus, boat and trails to Fort Wilderness. Wilderness Lodge is the only Magic Kingdom Deluxe Resort not located on the monorail line. However, the monorail can most easily be accessed via Blue Flag boat launch to Disney's Contemporary Resort. From there, the monorail makes stops at the Transportation and Ticket Center with continuing service to Disney's Polynesian Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, the Magic Kingdom and returns to Disney's Contemporary Resort. The Epcot monorail can be accessed from the TTC.

THE TTC/MK FERRY GOING INTO DRY DOCK.

FROM EPCOT go to bus stop #1:

BUS to all parks, Downtown Disney and Ft. Wilderness. The bus stop is located between WL and VWL and provides a covered seating area with a drink vending machine. Buses run about every 20 minutes. Buses are often dispatched on an on-demand basis. A CM is sometimes stationed at the bus stop in the morning to monitor bus frequency and guest demand. The CM reports back to dispatch, where buses can be dispatched more frequently if needed. The CM can also tell guests the ETA of their bus.

SEPTEMBER 2013 TRAVEL TIMES VIA BUS AND BOAT FROM WL
Travel times courtesy of GrandCalifornian:

In September 2013, the travel times were as follows. Times do not include bus/boat wait times.

BUSES:

Animal Kingdom:
Stops at GF: 29 min
22 min return

Epcot:
Stops at FW: 23 min
15 min return

Hollywood Studios:
Stops at GF: 21 min
15 min return

Magic Kingdom:
Direct bus: 5 min to/from

Blizzard Beach:
Stops at GF: 23 min
13 min return

Typhoon Lagoon:
Stops at GF: 20 min
15 min return

Downtown Disney Marketplace:
Stops at GF: 26 min
24 min return

BOATS:

Red Flag boat:
12 min to/from MK

Red/Green Flag boat:
20 min to/from MK via FW (Used at off peak times to serve both FW and WL with one larger boat.)

Blue Flag boat:
5 min direct to/from CR

5 min direct to/from FW

14 min CR via FW

14 min FW via CR

WDWKOOK: During busier times, travel times seem to be at least 5 minutes more than the September travel times listed above. Sometimes the Blue Flag boat to CR travels first to FW, which adds about 10 minutes. Also, in August 2013, the AK, DHS and Epcot buses went to FW after WL and the AK bus also went to a water park after FW. The buses back to the resort are much faster than going to the parks, except to the MK which is always non-stop. Wilderness Lodge is always the first stop coming back. Walking to Pioneer Hall at Fort Wilderness takes about 20 minutes.

BUSES FOR EARLY ADRs (Advance Dining Reservations)

Buses for the Magic Kingdom and Magic Kingdom Resort Area will start running at 6:30am DAILY.

Buses for Animal Kingdom/Animal Kingdom Lodge will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

Buses for the Disney's Hollywood Studios (covering the Epcot Resort Area) will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

Buses for Epcot (Princess Breakfast at Norway) will start running at 7:00-7:15am DAILY.

This information is valid EVERY DAY, and for ALL DISNEY RESORTS serviced by Bus transportation.

These buses are for Breakfasts only, and should not be used for general park access. Always let the driver know where you are going upon boarding the bus. Most times, the driver will be able to take you directly (ie: Contemporary, for Chef Mickey's) but sometimes this is not possible. As such, you should always allow time for a connection when going Resort to Resort. Actual arrival times will vary by location.

BOAT launch to the Magic Kingdom, Ft. Wilderness and Disney's Contemporary Resort. The boat launch is located in the back of the resort to the left of the geyser as seen from WL:

RED FLAG: The boat to the left of the dock has a red flag and goes to the Magic Kingdom. The red flag boats operate from a half hour before the Magic Kingdom opens to an hour and a half after the Magic Kingdom closes.

BLUE FLAG: The boat to the right of the dock has a blue flag, and goes to Fort Wilderness and Disney's Contemporary Resort. These boats run from 6:45 AM to 11:30 PM.

Take the BLUE FLAG from CR:

WALK/BIKE to Fort Wilderness. There are trails marked on the map below. They are perfect for biking, walking or jogging. Photos of the trails are in the ACTIVITIES section.
