Grand Cayman Help Needed

We just booked a last minute 7 night on the Fantasy and I have Cozumel and Jamaica excursions booked, I was trying to avoid doing another formal excursion on the Grand Cayman day but would LOVE some casual ideas as we have never been. Can you walk to anywhere neat from the port? Any help is MUCH appreciated! It will be 2 adults and 2 kids ages 13 and 10

Take a taxi to the turtle farm. There's also a restaurant inside there with free wifi.

Yes, the ship will tender in to the pier. You can walk a short distance to a shopping area which has a few restaurants ( Margarita ville) etc. There are some really nice shops. I am sure there are lots of other things you can do, we just chose to grab a bite to eat and walk around. Have fun!

Hi - the stop is tendered so the boat ride back and forth is fun.

We just walked around near the dock - there was some nice shops and places to eat. We did the partial sumbmerged sub ride and it was a lot of fun as well.

We dropped about $60 on a quick lunch on the water - it was expensive but we enjoyed eating on the beach and seeing the Fantasy in the distance.

Did you get a good deal? Often wondered how easy it would be to do a "last minute" cruise...

Have fun!

If you are interested in a beach day, check out Royal Palms Beach Club. That is where we'll be headed!

We booked the Duck boat tour since it does a little island tour before going out into the water to see some ship wrecks. I think it was fairly cheap.

After our snorkeling excursion a couple of years ago we headed over to. Margaritaville with the kids. Had a great lunch and cocktails....great view of the harbor and the Magic. After lunch our boys jump in the pools and enjoyed the water slide. After that we walked around and shopped a bit. Very nice....

We were also there on our honeymoon many years ago....Turtle Farm fun....7 mile beach gorgeous....just a cab ride to any of these places. Grand cayman is a very wealthy island .....clean.......the people are wonderful! Enjoy!

Thanks! Great advice. I am a travel agent and I got an agent rate of 3400 for the four of us, so excited, just was assigned to an oversized verandah (booked it yesterday) I'm so thrilled!

Just a note here, while there is also a pool at the Royal Palms it's adult only. Must be 18 to use the pool, however under 18 can be in the pool area.

Take the public bus to either Seven mile beach or continue to Turtle Farm or Hell. Bus fare on Feb '13 was $2.50 per person per ride.

The public buses are 15 passenger vans. Many tourists take them. Note that cabs are ALSO 15 passenger vans and they wait until they get filled up.

We made a mistake of taking a cab to seven mile beach. We then wanted to go to Hell but no cab would take us because all of them were only taking passengers back to the port. They eventually told us about taking the public bus and that's what we did. If we had gone to Hell first, we could have come back and stopped at seven mile beach and then would have been able to take a cab from there.

The cabbies don't like the buses because they take their business...

Just my opinion but I'd definitely have a destination in mind (Turtle Farm or Royal Palms, etc.) or a planned excursion. We were there a few weeks ago and had decided we would wander around the pier area to shop/eat before going to the Turtle Farm. The immediate pier area does have some decent shops if you're looking for high-end jewelry, etc but otherwise I wasn't too impressed. It was hot, somewhat confusing to find "regular" shopping vs. the shopping on the maps provided by Disney (jewelry, jewelry, jewelry). Also, we didn't want to do a chain restaurant but didn't have an easy time finding an alternative (again, we were only right near the pier). Next time around I'd make sure to do lunch on the ship and then head straight to a beach

Edited to add: I second what su_A_ve recommended. The buses are quick, easy and cheap. Just keep in mind that they don't really LOOK like buses - more like unmarked passenger vans. Bus fare was still $2.50 at the end of April.

If you just want a beach day, the 7-mile beach is a (really long, as you can tell by the name) beach nearby. You can't walk to it, but you can just find a taxi (lots near where you arrive on the tender boats) and have them take you somewhere for not much money (about $10 if I remember). We just had him drop us off at some random location. Some local guys were renting beach chairs/umbrellas, and selling water and soft drinks out of a cooler, so we had a good time just hanging around and swimming. There were some big inflatables in the water that you could pay to play on, there was a bar within a short walk (probably could have picked up food there, but we just were there just a few hours). It was a VERY nice beach - I thought it was the best I've ever seen in terms of sand/water quality. If you wanted more structure, you could probably find one of the beach clubs along the beach and pay to go there for the day.

My plans are to take a cab to Hell, then a cab to the Cayman Turtle Farm, a cab from there to the Royal Palm and then a cab back to the port...

Does this sound reasonable? How difficult is it to get a cab at each of those places heading to our next stop? How long is the usual wait for a cab?

Many thanks...
