Generally speaking, in ports, you need your KTTW card (each of you) to get off the ship. And, to regain entry to the port area, your KTTW card and a photo ID for adults. That could be a driver's license, state ID, or passport.

There are some ports around the world where you are required to have your passport off the ship. On all our cruises, we've only been required to take our passport off the ship in 3 ports.

Panama Canal; Alaska; Med; WB Transatlantic; Mexican Riviera; Hawaii; Baja CA; Bahamas; Eastern/Western Caribbean

I leave my passport in the safe and bring a copy (just in case to help with a replacement if needed). In theory the ship will get your passport to the ship's agent in that port if you can't make it back to the ship. In a lot of ports (Mexico in particular), I'd be worried about passport theft. So if it's not required, just bring your DL and leave the passport in your stateroom.

Foreign port I always take my passport and leave a photo copy of it in the safe on board.. Its useless to you back on the ship if you have an issue. Domestic port, it's stays in the safe.

No need to bring your passport for the Atlantis excursion, we left ours in our room. We did go back for them after the excursion and got them stamped at the office just outside of the docks.

In case you run into problems in the port it would be wise to at least bring a copy of your passport. We have never taken our original. What we have done is to make a reduced size copy of our info page. It is credit card size and we laminate it. Easy. We do that whether cruising or staying on land out of the country. Peace of mind for the "just in case".
