Thoughts about the new Magic

We just came back from a three-day cruise on the Magic. We are platinum cruisers, have been on every ship, and were looking forward to the "reimagined" ship. We also were wondering if, having been on the larger ships, we would be disappointed. Here are some thoughts:

1. I know some people like the smaller ships for the "nostalgia" effect, but when you change things, then you lose the nostalgia! When I walk into the lobby atrium and it's completely different (only one staircase, different chandelier), it's not a nostalgic feel, it's more like a feeling of being on a miniature Dream or Fantasy.

2. When we were on our balcony and looked down, the railings along the whole length of the ship (not the handrail, but metal pieces that run the whole length) were completely chipped of all paint and were rusted. Definitely not a sign of a well kept, or even recently renovated ship. That was disappointing.

3. The pool deck had huge puddles of water on them and seemed to not drain well. I don't remember this being an issue in years past (and there was not a big rainstorm or anything). DD7 hated the Mickey pool as compared to the larger ships.

4. The AquaDunk was AWESOME! DS20 and I loved it. The rest of the family thought it was too intense to even give it a try. The new Mickey slide was fun too. Nice additions to the pool area, with options other than just the pools.

5. The food was great and we enjoyed our meals. One thing we did not appreciate was our night in Animator's Palate when our assistant server showed our daughters these light-up cups, how cool they were, and then said, "You can have it if your parents say it's ok. They're $4.95". That's definitely not a classy move and we thought very tacky for Disney.

6. Lastly, our poor DD12 caught a stomach bug and had to spend the entire day of Castaway Cay in bed, throwing up. So sad for her, but she caught up on some movies and TV shows and we tried to make the best of it. Thank goodness no one else got sick! Our stateroom host was very accommodating and helpful. Luckily we had two connecting rooms so weren't all on top of each other!

We are booked for Alaska 2015 on the Wonder. We are very excited!

Interesting.

The Magic is still my favorite even after seeing the dream and fantasy. Each are good in heir own way. Thinking of going back to the magic. Some changes are welcome like the pool areas. I am not looking for nostalgia, so a renovated lobby is no biggie. I like the "smaller" crowds on the classic ships. So, looks like refurbished but some maintenance issues? My kids are older teens now so not worried about the Mickey pool. Etc.

Do you immediately think, "wow this is way smaller or in any way lacking compared to the larger ships."?

I have only been on the Dream and the Wonder. We really liked the Dream but fell in love with the Wonder. Sounds like a lot of what we loved about the Wonder has been removed from the Magic.

Not necessarily. We have not been on the Wonder, but have been on all the other boats, including the original Magic and the reimagined Magic. Our take of the new Magic was that they got rid of all the things we didn't like, but left all the classic boat things that we did like.

People will have different opinions, but there are still plenty of differences between the Magic and the Dream/Fantasy.

Some things I missed that were on the original magic that we're not on the larger ships were the location of the buena vista theater, the location of the restaurants, the pool layout (adult area kind of better on larger ships), but overall the larger ships seemed too crowded up there. I like the magic cabanas outdoor seating better. Not quite as much walking distance to get where you want to go overall....

Yes, the larger ships are very good and very impressive. Still miss the overall experience of the classic ships.

I'm all for less people no matter what! I loved how Castaway Cay was so much less stressful without all the people, although DH felt it was a little "depressing" to not have as much commotion going on.

When we got on, we did not think that the ship was tiny or anything like that, it was just different...not as grandiose as the larger ships.

Surprisingly enough, there was NEVER a line for the Aquadunk (is it possible it's too intense for people?), and not much line for the Mickey slide, especially later during the cruise.

I agree about the light up cups. I was annoyed at how they did that.

The assistant servers are now supposed to try to offer to sell you a light up cup. Most will try to sell you one, some choose not to. Our server was very polite about selling them, just held them up and asked if we wanted one. I can see how a pushier server would come off as tacky and annoying trying to sell the cups. I think the cups should be out for display or on the menu, but the servers shouldn't have to advertise them.

Thanks for sharing!

Am surprised how a 4.95 cup can irk so many people. You just spent thousands of dollars on a cruise, another 4.95 doesn't seem like a big deal to me no matter if you felt backed into it or not.

I can only speak for myself, but i would be upset by the upsell. My issue is that the servers tend to address the child(ren), rather than the parent(s), knowing that it will be harder for the parents to say no. It is, IMO, an ugly business practice and one that I will not reward. I would be much more likely to make the purchase if the cup was shown on the kids' menu and the choice/decision was completely our own.

You are right about spending thousands on the cruise, so why not just give them to the kids?

It would bother me...I hate upsells and you get a kid all excited about a light up cup and the parent has to be "bad guy" and say no if they don't want it. It is the principal of the thing. Of course another $4.95 is going to break someone. Just irks me.

I think it depends on your servers. We have never had the upsell experience on DCL while many others have. They also do this at some of the WDW restaurants, the Prime Time at the Studios is one that comes to mind, but, again, it depends on your server.

We were on the Magic and loved it. We went in Feb and have been on all ships as well and prefer the classic ships. The pool areas are our favorite. I can spend all day just watching the classic Disney movies. I do love the new AquaDunk. Cabanas is wonderful. We are know waiting on the rest of 2015 so we can book the WBTA.
