st maarten tours

Hi,
We are interested in taking one of the tours in St. Maarten to see the island. We would also like to do shopping, including jewelry. Would love opinions on tours you have taken what you liked or didn't like. Thanks

Bernard's is the biggie that's talked about everywhere. But I've heard really good things about Joyce Prince, too.

FWIW if you just want to do the cruise-ship type of shopping (tanzanite, etc, bamboo sheets at Cariloha, etc) you can just walk to the main part of St Maarten or take the water taxi over there (costs a few bucks but saves you some time and sweat), and it's right there.

Of course, if you want to go to the French side, you'll need some sort of transportation.

We did the Under 2 Flags tour 2 weeks ago and at this time I would not recommend it. We're pretty easy to please but the bus was hot and the speaker system did now work well so we could not hear our guide. She was very kind but the majority of the time it felt like a sight seeing drive around the island.

We did enjoy some shopping at the end but as the pp said, it's was easily accessible just by walking off the ship.

We did the Sightseeing and Butterfly Farm Tour. I would NOT recommend it to my worst enemy. We got on the tour bus and my DH had to sit in the front with the driver and I had to sit in the back. The driver was extremely rude when we asked to sit together. There were single people sitting alone, so we did not understand why one of them could not ride up front so we could sit together, but anyways. The bus was very hot and the speaker system did not work, so I had no idea what sights I was supposedly seeing. The island was not at all what I expected. It was very run down and dirty. The tour dropped us off on the French side for some shopping. It was an open air type market. Every booth had the same old stuff and they were very very pushy in trying to get you to purchase from them. After that we went on to the Butterfly Farm. It was awful! It is a screened in area with a bunch of overgrown weeds. We saw a few butterflies that probably could have been seen in our backyard. We had seen everything and were ready to go in 5 minutes. Worst port adventure ever! After that we took the water taxi to the port shopping area where we hoped to improve on our horrible day. The people inside and outside the shops were no different than the French side. They were very pushy and rude. They were the worst in Hard Rock Cafe! I had been most excited about stopping at St. Maarten on our cruise, and I wound up hating it. It was very disappointing, and you couldn't pay me to go back there. However, we absolutely a LOVED St. Thomas! My advice would be to skip a port adventure, do what shopping you are interested in doing, and then enjoy the rest of the day on the boat with less crowds at the pools, AquaDuck, etc.

Hi, Scrapping..Im in Ontario too and have been on the Disney Dream with my daughter. We are in the midst of doing the Fantasy and was wondering if you went to both st. maarten and st. Thomas and if so which you preferred? We are planning on going may 2015 if DCL ever releases the next batch of itineraries (anxious).

I have been looking at the excursions. I would like to do a tour of the island but I definitely want some beach time? Any suggestions the best way to do it?

What I don't like about all the tours or excursions is that they all pretty much only go to Orient Beach. You don't get much of a choice if you want to go to any other beach such as Maho beach or Le Gallion instead of Orient.

Bernard's

My crew did a tour with Bernard's-there are several to choose from so you can pick your focus. We were more interested in shopping so our tour focused on that, but there were beach focused tours as well. My favorite stop in St. Maarten was Maho beach where you can watch the planes fly in and out...very neat. Our shopping focus tour still allowed 2 hours at Maho Beach. I would highly recommend Bernard's for an overview of the island and spending most of your time at Maho...
