Target Red Card important news

I know lots of you use Target Red Card in an effort to save money on gift cards, etc.... I thought you should be aware of this news. May none of you be personally affected. - Dreams

"Target Customers Hit in Major Credit Card Breach

"Payment card data was stolen from an unknown number of Target Corp. customers starting on the busy Black Friday weekend in a major breach at the U.S. retailer, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Secret Service is investigating, according to a spokesman for the agency, which safeguards the nation's payment systems. Target officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Investigators believe the data was obtained via software installed on machines that customers use to swipe magnetic strips on their cards when paying for merchandise at Target stores, according to the person who was not authorized to discuss the matter and declined to provide further details.

Krebs on Security, a closely watched security industry blog that broke the news, said the breach involved nearly all of Target's 1,797 stores in the United States, citing sources at two credit card issuers. The report said that "track data" from at least 1 million payment cards was thought to have been stolen before Target uncovered the operation, but that the number could be significantly higher.

"When all is said and done, this one will put its mark up there with some of the largest retail breaches to date," the report cited an unnamed source as saying.

The biggest credit card breach at a U.S. retailer reported to date was an attack against TJX ***, the parent of TJ Maxx and Marshalls. The company disclosed in March 2007 that data from 45.7 million payment cards had been stolen by hackers over 18 months. Banks later asserted in court documents the hackers could have obtained more than 94 million account numbers.

The data breach at Target could have extended from just after Thanksgiving to December 15, Krebs said, citing evidence from investigators.

It is not yet clear how the attackers were able to compromise point-of-sales terminals at so many Target stores across the country. Doing so would have required careful planning by sophisticated cyber criminals.

An American Express spokeswoman said the company is aware of the incident and is putting fraud controls in place.

Representatives for Visa and MasterCard declined to comment.

There are no indications that the theft affected shoppers on Target's website, Krebs reported."

I doubt red card users need to be worried, it's their own card. It's other debit and credit users that are effected.

From what I have been able to read, this isn't limited to RED Cards. If you swiped any card at a Target store between the dates - which are changing daily - your card information is at risk. The last date range I heard was the 27th of November to the 15th of December.

It is not limited to redcard holders. They were able to read card numbers, subscriber name and the cvv number. If the card was used as a debit card it is possible the PIN may have been captured as well.

I'll post what I put in the Budget thread. I logged onto Redcard (have a debit card) and changed my pin. Then I called Chase (have a Disney Visa CC) and they were already well aware of the situation (the rep said they'd had thousands of calls) and would monitor my account for any suspicious activity. So I would just contact the bank or credit union you use and make sure they're aware of what's going on. I was on Target's FB page earlier and there were reports of people's bank accounts being cleaned out. I don't know if they were related or not, just passing it on. Just now on Target's FB page, NBC news is recommending cancelling any card that was used during the three week period.

If your card was used at Target during the time frame, call your bank and ask them what to do. I did just that and they asked me to just keep an eye on my account and assured me they are doing the same. They also reminded me that I have 0 liability in the event of fraud. I would suggest anyone concerned about their accounts do the same and find out what your exposure might be and find out just what action they suggest.

My Disney Visa was hacked this weekend. I did shop at Target on Black Friday with this card. Thankfully Chase caught it and notified me.

Not to minimize a serious situation, but I've done a very good job of cleaning out my bank account without any help (dues, WDW, cruise... that Mouse has a hold on us)!

I just read an update to an article that Target has confirmed that PIN numbers were not captured.

Not a big deal for credit card users. If you have bogus charges, just call your bank, have the charges deleted, and they will issue you a new card. It has happened several times to me. Hassle? Yes. Serious problem? Not really.

And that's exactly why I use "credit" cards.

The reports I saw on the news last night said it was not just the credit card that was used at Target but all your cards AND identity could be affected. Identity theft was a very big concern with this, more than erroneous charges on your card.

They said to keep an eye on ALL your accounts.
