Photos on the cruise

Do photos on the ship work the same way as WDW photopass? Will the photographer use your camera, as well as theirs? Can you buy a photo package in advance? I really prefer to take my own pictures...but Im curious how it works...

It's done by face recognition so no need for any photo pass.

When you get on they take a security photo for your ship ID, this is linked go your card and the stateroom.

Then as they take photos on the new ships they use face recognition and out all your photos in a folder for you, on the two older ships there accessible by terminal using your card or on shelves to view.

This is a photo of the folders on the newer ships fantasy and dream

You can by a package online in advance or on ship and you can take your own photos and ship CMs will take for you with a character.

You can pre-purchase the CD before the cruise or on board. It is the same price either way. You can pre order them from approximately 6 weeks before your sail date. We had to get our room key scanned every time we had photos taken. We had 2 of us, on a 4 day cruise and we ended up with 1300 individual photos For our 4 day cruise, we paid $229.95 for all our photos onto a CD. You can also add all the prints for an extra $50. If you want to purchase photos, it makes more sense to purchase the CD. To purchase 10 photos on our cruise it was $150. 15 photos were $200. For $230, we ended up with well over 1000 photos.

The ship's photographers are not DCL employees and will not use your camera. If there happens to be a crew member around they will but this is not always the case.

At most character greetings the handlers used our camera. We purchased the CD and had probably 200 pics. We felt it was worth it. Also we didn't have to lug our camera around every where.

Doesn't leave a lot of time for excursions.

As other's have stated, most of the time the handlers will take a picture for you, but I have had the ship's photographer take pictures with my camera. Maybe it just depends on the photographer.

One big difference is that you have to buy the pictures before you get off the boat. The parks photo passes allow you to decide after your vacation, but this is not the case with the cruises.

If you are going to use your own camera, you really need to have a decent camera with a strong flash. Most pictures taken with my phone or my pocket camera don't come out well (with the exception of Castaway Cay where there is a lot of light). When I use my DSLR with a separate flash, I usually get good pictures.

We have always bought the photos and appreciate the great quality. We usually find a photographer in particular that is patient and friendly and tip them $10 or $20. In return, they have always taken extra pictures, given us photos of the characters, etc. we don't expect it, but it sure is nice.

The one thing to remember, the photos taken all have a border around them with something disney. You can crop or zoom in to avoid this, but not always the same picture. With your camera, of course, there is no border or marketing.

On our disc we have 5/6 poses sometimes with the same character so it can really add up. We knew we wanted the CD so we would seek out the photographers. Same on CC we got several when they usually just snap 1 or 2.

No excursions for us we never left the ship

Also keep in mind that the ship photographers are professionals, while WDW/DL photopass photographers are not. I calculate what we pay for ship photos against what I would pay for a professional sitting and prints/digital files on land and it's quite a deal.

Yes, it was a lot of photos. But our main interest is meeting characters. we met every character we could on the Dream, most on multiple occasions. One morning we did the Princess Gathering (6 princesses) Minnie, Tinker and Daisy. There is two of us. The photographer took 3-4 photos of each of us separately with each character and then 3-4 more together. That one morning alone, within two hours, we would have averages 80-90 photos.

When we picked up our package, the manager did say she didn't think say one had ever taken so many photos on a 4 night cruise. We went on Castaway but stayed on board at Nassau

I agree that the photo package can be a very good deal if you really make an effort to have a lot of photos taken. It is especially true with kids that the more photos you take, the better chance you'll end up with good ones. Plus the more we did it, the more comfortable our kids became with the photographers. I can see how much more relaxed they are and their personalities shine through more in the pics that were taken towards the end of the cruise vs the beginning. We would have paid at least the same amount if not more for someone locally to do a single photo shoot and I know we would not have ended up with the same type of photos.

So children had to wait to see characters so you could have 12 photos taken per character.
