Any old Remedies that made you well. . . Sick?

The one that stands out in my mind was a mens work sock filled with salt that had been heated in a skillet. The remedy for seemingly whatever ails you in my home growing up!

As a kid what disturbed me was the itch of that wool sock!

Maybe, it was the odor?

Wonder how many times that sock had actually been worn!

My mother did the salt in a sock thing too! For earaches.

Yes - I used to use essential oils until I developed a horrible allergy to rosemary oil from using it as a "home remedy." Now I can't even walk by my rosemary bushes in the back yard without wheezing, and touching them makes me break out in hives. Rosemary was my favorite before that, so I threw out all the essential oils after that.

Sweet oil in the ear for an earache.

Eucalyptus oil in the humidifier to clear up stuffy noses.

Vapo Rub on the bottoms of your feet with socks to get rid of a cold.

And of course soup! Preferably chicken.

Gargle warm salt water for a sore throat.

*** I misread! These are the ones I use that work. They don't make anyone sick though.

Worm761:. You reminded me of another one. Homemade vapo rub lozenges this was way before commercial products were available, made again in that skillet. I do not know what went into that concoction.

But, the ODOR and remembering the horrible taste left db and I hoping we wouldn't get whatever our parent(s) were ill with.

Not quite what you were asking for, but Pepto Bismol always made me throw up, rather than settling my stomach.

Mine's similar. My mother thinks Alka-Seltzer is a cure-all for whatever ails you. I don't think I've ever taken it where it didn't make me vomit. She would say "It tastes just like Sprite!" Uh, no it doesn't... but I can't drink Sprite anymore either because every time I even look at it, I think of that nasty Alka-Seltzer stuff.

The Vicks scarf! My mom would rub vicks all over this particular scarf and wrap it loosely around us so that those vapors could penetrate. All I remember it doing was making my eyes water. Vicks was SO much stronger "back then" (I'm 42.) Now, I put Vicks on my kids feet at night and then put socks on when they have a cough. Works like a charm and it's not right by their face!

My Middle daughter too! Even if she wasn't feeling nauseous before taking it ( but was taking it for other tummy problems)
