Well, I can't believe I am even posting here!
but wouldn't wiping while sitting involve somehow trying to to reach down around and into the toilet??? I think there must be some misunderstanding here. I don't think 'standing' means in a straight upright position????

I did help my son for quite some time.
He actually had some issues, toddler constipation, etc.....
He was on his own by Kindergarten.
But, OMG, as a general rule, shouldn't a non-impaired 7 year old be able to handle it. Not to mention 10 years old!

What do these kids do in school?
I agree with you,my kids would of been appaled if at 7 I had to wipe their butts. Yes,there was lots of coffee stainsbut thats how they learn.

OP here. What was I thinking?? But at least I know that my initial reaction to the yelling "I'm done" wasn't off base. And my nephew is a regular kid in every other way. No special needs and you could tell from the reaction of my dbil and dsil that this was a regular occurence, not a once-in-awhile thing. Of course, they also told me that my niece (who is almost 10,) still hates the loud flushing toilets and wears earmuffs when she goes the bathroom at school . So I guess the fact that they're wiping my nephew's hiney at age (almost) 7 shouldn't be that shocking...

Barring any sensory disorder, I could just picture that conversation at school!

"Why are you taking your earmuffs to the bathroom?"

"Those are my toilet flushin' muffs! I'm afraid of the toilet."

Maybe they should get her some ear plugs...much more discrete.

As a mother of small children, discussing booty-wiping seems perfectly normal to me. Is that weird???

Sent from me.

Me again,

The niece sounds like she probably has some auditory sensory-integration stuff going on. And, this is common with kids with developmental issues.

My son has some auditory sensory integration issues.
And, because I wear hearing aides, which can amplify even non-pleasant frequencies/sounds... I know EXACTLY how this is.
OMG!!!!!

I am just sayin' that maybe I understand about the niece.
And, if one child has some things going on, perhaps the nephew does too. Even if the OP, or even his parents, don't realize it.

Doesn't make it okay for the parents to baby and enable though.

They should be addressing any underlying issues, if they DO exist.
This girl should probably be thoroughly evaluated, and given appropriate and discreet earplugs, headphones.

Ohhh, when it comes to babies and preschoolers, I would very much agree.

I think it is the TMI and details of such booty-wiping, at any age, that are

Gotta laugh and crack up at the whole "I'M D O N E !!!!!" scenario though!

My daughter still loves to horrify and embarrass her younger cousin by reminding her that she couldn't wipe her own butt when she was 5, and my daughter had to do it - and she was only 11. My SIL was such an enabler that I'm surprised that my now 14 year old niece can wipe her own butt.

Both my girls were wiping before age 3 1/2 and were proficient by age 4. It's my job as a parent to make them as productive and independent as possible.
