Placeholder move process?

After you book a placeholder and find a cruise you would like to take what is the process to rebook? Im guessing there is no way to move online that you must call DCL. Correct? Is there a new added deposit if new cruise costs more or any other fees?

yes just a call to DCL or your TA to move it. If there is a higher cost, you will have to put down an additional deposit (but I assume you booked onboard, so the 10% down rule would still apply to the new cost)

A few days ago, I tried to move the date we booked onboard last week and it said I couldn't do so online and had to call. Don't know why.

Ok so here's another good question for those that have done this before...

I understand about the additional deposit. Let's say you move your placeholder cruise like 6 mos later. When you do finally find your actual cruise date, do you book it at the rate that it is "today", or at the rate it was 6 mos earlier when you booked the original placeholder?

Thanks.

You will get the 'today' rate. This is important to know.

Hey SuAve - thanks very much, that is good to know... Since opening rates are traditionally better, you would lose the advantage if you wait long to move it. I suppose it does give you a little time so when you get back home outside of the hype of the ship you can spend some time and see what dates are good and get it moved as soon as you can.

Thanks!

If the dates you want to sail have been released, you will be better off booking the actual sail date you want onboard vs. making a "dummy" booking and moving it later. This is particularly true if you'll be sailing during a peak time (i.e., spring break, summer, holidays). If you want to cruise in 2015, you can book an inexpensive cruise for late 2014 and move it as soon as the new dates are released.

This is best utilized when you book a dummy date to move when the next batch of cruise dates opens up. Doing this on opening day secures the lowest price and keeps the OBB benefits.

Both are very good points, thanks for the advice.

We are sailing in this December and are thinking about something in 2015, and since those are iffy a placeholder would be good. The other issue is the 2014/15 school schedule :S But either way we can grab the best available rate. Thanks!

If you named a TA when you booked on board, you will not be able to make any changes to your reservation. Your TA would have to do it. Otherwise, the "modify your reservation" should be active and allow you to change the date of your "dummy cruise"

More than likely early 2015 Dream and Fantasy (up until end of August) might get released in December. Late 2015 Dream and Fantasy, and all of Magic and Wonder will probably be released in early 2014 (Jan-Feb). If it's a peak period you will be cruising, you may want to book on opening day.

You can then reshop on board and if it's the same, you can transfer your deposit to the new one. If you use a TA, you could book a new one and then the TA will have to cancel the old one.

Good idea. Thanks.

If that does happen, and I book a new 2015 cruise before taking our December cruise, while on board can they re-book it, and still get all the goodies, OBC, 10% dep (well, I guess I would already have the deposit), and 10% off?

Or would they need to cancel the existing and rebook it on board? I wonder if they do this would there be a small chance of losing it? i.e. the computer releases it and someone else grabs it before its remade? I guess that's only a big concern if trying to get a room in high demand, but either way it would be good to know the process... thanks.

They changed the rules a bit ago correct...is it true you can only move it twice before you lose the original booking benefits? Or am I making this up

This is not true. Currently there is no limit to how many times you can move an OBB and retain the benefits. As a side note, there have been rumors in the past that DCL may change the policy so that you can only move an OBB once, but this is the first time I've heard of two moves being the limit!
