Southwest question

On Southwests's website, there's a note that says, "We are currently accepting air reservations through March 7, 2014. On August 26, 2013, we will open our schedule for sale through April 6, 2014. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently"

I need to make book flights that leave on Friday, April 4 & return on Saturday, April 12 (return flight will be outside their booking parameters, if they don't revise from stated dates)

My question for you Southwest gurus: Should I book a one-way ONLY for my outbound flight when these dates open up and then wait until April 12 opens up and book a one-way return flight then? or should I book a round trip with my correct outbound flight and a dummy return flight right away and then change the return as soon as that date opens up?

I'm new to Southwest, but I believe they don't charge change fees, so maybe the second (round trip) option is best????

You are correct, southwest does not charge a *fee* to change your reservation, but they do charge the difference in fare. Normally fares are lowest when they open them up. However, you can also "change" your reservation for a lower fare, for free, and get a refund (in the form of a credit) if the price drops. So you are not at risk to buy it now & then if the price lowers, re-ticket it. It doesn't buy you anything to buy the return trip now if it's not open yet.

All flights on SWA are one-way flights. You will not save any money by waiting to book them together.

It won't make a difference in price if you book the flights separately, but it is more convenient to have it all on one booking, otherwise you'll have different confirmation numbers.

There is no charge to change tickets, but if the flight you change to is cheaper than what you paid, you get a credit. You have to use the credit for the same person within one year from the date you originally booked. For example, if you booked a ticket today for October for $300 and later change it to next April but it only costs $260, you'll need to use the $40 difference by 10/14, and it's not just that you need to rebook by that day, you need to fly by that date.

Prices on SW can change several times within the same week. Sometimes tickets are cheaper on T-W-Th, sometimes on the weekends, sometimes they aren't cheaper at all. I wouldn't rush to book it unless it is a really cheap deal. Check around a little or try it on different days.

PP is correct, all flights are one way and you don't get a discount for booking round trip.

One thing to note; Southwest ALWAYS has sale rates come out on Tuesdays so it's best to wait until Tuesday to look for fares.

Does anyone have a *best guess* as to when they will extend the schedule? I need one-way to San Diego for the repositioning cruise in May.

That isn't true. Sometimes they have a special fare for one day, or a weekend special (I get an email). I've found sales on weekends pretty often lately. Sometimes I check every day for a week or two and jump when I see the fares move.

I'm needing March 14 & March 22 tickets. Their website says they will release new rates on April 26th which is a Monday. What time? Is that the day the prices should be lowest or do I wait for the next day which is a Tuesday in the afternoon (saw somewhere to do after 3pm EST)? So confused. I've been watching their rates the last week and looking at Feb for reference. They just bumped all prices today. Advice? Buy Monday or wait for Tuesday. We are cruising spring break, so I would guess the prices will only go up.

There's no way to know exactly when those dates will open up, but if you look at this thread you can see when May has opened for booking in recent years to give you some idea of when it might be. May generally has opened for booking sometime in October.

Tickets will go on sale bright and early. Typically somewhere around 5-5:30 a.m. CT. As far as sales go, there's really no way to tell if the first-day fares will be the lowest or if prices will go down later. You're traveling during Spring Break season, so demand tends to be higher and sales less likely. In my experience, from our airport (STL) the fares on day one almost always have been the lowest and prices have only gone up from there.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll be ready At least its good that they offer credits if the price does drop. Do you know if there is a "farewatch" software for SW fares to monitor our specific date/location pair or will I need to watch everyday for rates to drop in addition to watching the email & ding specials?

SW doesn't share baggage handling with anyone but ATA. If you book part of a trip on Delta and switch to a SW flight, you have to go get your luggage and re-check it.

I doubt you'll see SW joining the onboard check-in any time soon.

We booked our flight going down the day it became available on SW and had to wait over a month for them to open up the dates for our return flight. I keep looking at their specials but our flights, all booked the day they first became available, have only gone up in price. From what I understand if the price drops I could call for an adjustment.
