Hotel to stay in before checking into Grand Californian

We are flying in the night before we check into the Grand Californian. I am currently not planning on renting a car for this trip. I was thinking that we would stay at a nearby good neighbor hotel that night (we will land around 9 PM) and then just walk over to GCH in the morning to check-in before our first day at the parks. Is this reasonable? This is our first trip so I am not familiar with the surroundings and hoping this will work.

Any suggestions on which hotel would provide the most straightforward route to do this?

You can try Best Western Stovalls. They are within walking distance to the Grand Californian Hotel.

For walking, this is a good choice since you don't have to go through the esplanade and is a pretty good value compared to some of the ones on Harbor.

FWIW, I have walked across the Esplanade with luggage twice before and, aside from the security crowds at times, the CMs do not check your luggage. You tell them you want to go across and not into the parks and they will assign a CM to walk with you to the other side. So no big deal if one needs to do it.

In another thread you mentioned you will visit in late February, so I assume you will take advantage of the Dapper Day rates
The excellent rates at GCH, reduces the savings (and motivation) to spend that first night off-site.

Taking a taxi (or shuttle) directly from the airport to the Grand will give you the full luxury hotel expierience

I love the GCH and VGC, but will have my first DLH visit (post-remodel) for Dapper Day.

EDIT--- I just read your other post, and see you will be staying at VGC.
You could still take advantage of the Dapper Day rates, and stay at GCH or PPH (directly across the street). Make a view request in advance, there are details in the VGC superthread.

We did this in 2011 we stayed 1 night at Best Western Plus Anaheim Inn and finished staying at Paradise Pier Hotel which is across the street from Grand Californian. It is a walk across the street from the main hub, then through the hub. But we also went to the park on the first day to get our AP's so being across the street was what we where looking for. Best Western Stovalls is right down the street from Grand Californian and doesn't require going through the hub. The walk from Best Western Plus Anaheim is .5 miles or 10 min. The walk from Best Western Stovall's is .3 miles or 6 min. The walking distance is from google I tried to post the maps but it didn't show up right.

Thank you everybody! This has helped a lot. And thank you Nonsuch for the Dapper Dan tip. I had not heard of the Dapper Days! I think those rates just might bring an onsite hotel into range for us.

And after reading their site that looks like some serious fun!! My DH and I talk a lot about when we were little, going to Disney meant you dressed up. He will get a kick out of participating in this.
