That was always a big huge fear of mine when we were at hotels when DD was little as she was a climber. We tried to stay in hotels without balconies or when we had them not to let her know they were there! We also checked and re-checked to be sure the door was locked because I was terrified that she would sneak out when we weren't looking. I can totally see how a little one could scale that railing trying to get the animals, or just trying to get up on it to lean over to get a closer look at the animals, especially if there are chairs and tables to use to climb on. Hope the child is ok.

Ironically I am working on a layout of DS on the balcony, and back then, it never occurred to me that he could clamber over it or push a chair up to it. He just stood there and looked with his binoculars. Of course, he was 8 and not a climber.

Hope the little girl is okay.

The BLT balconies scare me a bit. My kids are grown but I would be a wreck if we were on a high floor when they were little.

They will probably sue Disney now and next thing you know all balconies will have nets or something.

Is that not the case at Jambo?
Kidani is the same as Jambo where there is the road area between the building and the savannah area and there are the metal "fans" that keep the animals inside the savannah area.

I know this isn't funny at all, but the picture of the giraffe watching did give me a small chuckle.

We stayed on the 14th floor at CR when DS was little, and I was terrified.

Hope the little girl is ok. Third story is quite a drop...

I do agree I liked that the giraffe seems concerned and he made me chuckle a little as well. But not at the situation.

You might be right on this. When I was in high school, there used to be an observation deck at O'Hare where you could watch planes take off and land. One of the kids at our school fell or was pushed off the observation deck, with the predictable result, and shortly afterward, the observation area went away.

Not to minimize the effect of the child, but the adults involved need to have some common sense. I do hope she is OK. I am wondering how many people have actually fallen off of balconies at WDW.

The giraffe is cute. He must be wondering what in earth id going on. That certainly isn't his hay truck!

I'm glad to hear that the girl seems fine.

I hate to be even more flip about the situation but I wish that the article would have specified if the dad threw on pants. I have an image of a naked man in the savanna (perhaps the result of a French film that I once saw) but then, I'm not sure if I would stop for clothing if it was my child!

My daughter was 6 when we stayed on the savanna this past Feb. It never occurred to me that such a thing could happen. Maybe I'm correct in my assessment that my child has sense not to climb over the rail or try to perch for a better view or maybe I'm just lucky. I guess any child could be overtaken by excitement.

It's like he/she went over to the balcony, convinced the child to climb onto him/her, and then got scared and ran away and decided to see what would happen. But didn't think the child would actually try to jump onto the giraffe. It is Disney, after all.

I was there and this is what i can tell you. We were going to dinner at boma and went out to see the anima,s. There were paramedics and officials running like crazy. Aasked us if we saw anythting because they wre having trouble finding the room from that vantage point. I was surprised that he actually toldd us what hwappened. My friend has a 6 yr old daughter so it really upset her. When we came back arround to wLk oud they were ca,ling in animal keepers. I guess so they could cut through. There was a lady talking to them holding a small child. She just kept saying " you dont even kniw where the room is". I just kupt thinking i would be on that balcony losing my mind, they would have no trouble finding jt.
