What if only one person doesn't show up?

A friend of mine who lives near WDW would like to join us at epcot one day of our trip. We're planning to snack around the countries in the early afternoon, and then go to Garden Grill for the character dinner (she wants to go to a character meal with my kids, and I told her we were planning this dinner for Epcot so she asked if we could go when she's with us). I know I have to give a cd it card number. Including my friend, we will be a party of 5. What happens if she doesn't come with us? Will they charge us $10 for her? I feel bad taking up a table for 5 if we end up being only 4. In case she ends up not coming, do you think I could call disney dining that morning and ask them to reduce our party to 4 people?

No problem, as long as at least one person shows ther is no penalty.

ADR "NO-SHOW" CANCELLATION FEES:

1) The rule says you are charged $10 per person for "no-show" ADR's.
. . . penalty applies when none of the party appears for the ADR
. . . penalty does not apply as long as some guests in party appear
. . . character meals and signature meals usually have these penalties
. . . other meals that request a credit card hold may include a penalty fee
2) The "no-show" penalty procedure
. . . podium person lists ADR as no-show (checks "On Hold" box in computer)
. . . usually after 30-minutes tardiness you are marked as a "no-show"
. . . once listed as "no-show", your name and number of your guests are listed
. . . the computer is reviewed by a manager at the end of the day
. . . the eatery manager SOLELY determines whether or not to charge you
. . . if charged, the cost penalty is on your credit/debit card
3) Exceptions - policy
. . . penalty is not assessed for cancellations made the day before ADR
. . . for some meals, a different 24-48 hour cancel period may be in effect
4) Exceptions - not policy, but at manager's discretion
. . . cancellations for lunch/dinner made early in the same day
. . . you come to the eatery ANYTIME during the same day and apologize
. . . a few minutes tardy, podium person usually will not denote "On Hold"
5) Trial Period
. . . this was done on a trial-basis for 4-weeks in Epcot
. . . cut down no-shows by over 75% at Epcot eateries
. . . Le Cellier cut daily no-shows to 1-page from 2-3 pages
. . . now a policy, as no-shows greatly can reduce eatery revenue
. . . a no-show takes a ressie someone else might have kept

[i]NOTE: During busy periods, there might be no grace period and
late-is-late, and they might even cancel your ADR. However, whether
the ADR was canceled due to tardiness or not, it does not affect
the application of the penalty fee. For the "no-show" fee at other
eateries, you could show for dinner with a breakfast ADR and not be
tardy or a "no-show". In fact, at two eateries I know, you are at the
front of the line for the next table even when you are late, whether
late by 15-minutes or 5-hours.

Great, thank you!

Would you call disney dining that morning if you were me, if she can't come? So they could change it to a party of 4 so we don't unnecessarily take up a larger table that another party could use?

I would leave it as is and just show up short. I don't think they're supposed to make a NEW reservation to adjust yours, however last year they closed out the reservation and then said, "Sure Michael, let me check availability for your party of 2. Oh sorry, nothing is available for 2." Hung up, luckily re-booked the 3 I just canceled.

HEEEYYY South Jersey! I agree - I would not touch it. Leave it alone and you won't get charged if one person doesn't show it.

Oh ok, I understand. They can't change the number of people without first canceling the ADR and then rebooking, same as we could do online. I'll keep it then if she doesn't come...my kids would be crushed if we missed Garden Grill!

No, I would leave it as is. Just let the CMs at the podium you are a group of 4. The booth we were seated in looked like it could seat 4-6 because it was a banquette style seat where everyone is on one side of the table looking out at the Listen to the Land attraction.
