I won't be anywhere near Boma or Mara anytime soon, sorry. I'll have to make it up to you another way...I did find a recipe for Red Chile Toffee that I'm debating on trying sometime in the near future...

nope.

Not really. Bought it.

I mean, it's just meant to be right?

A couple of days later, I'm coming back from... I don't remember.
Doesn't matter.

I was on a section of road where the speed limit is 80kph/50mph. But frequently, during the day, depending on traffic, you can expect to be at a dead standstill at least a couple of times before you get through the next set of traffic lights.

Traffic's moving okay... probably around 60kph/35mph or so.
And of course, we come to a standstill.

I'm sitting there.
Just behind a car who's sitting behind another car and so on for about 50 cars.

I glance in my rearview mirror and there's a truck behind me.
He's about one car-length back.
It's one of those big flatbed trucks that you see for hauling around lumber, or as was the case here, stacks of drywall.

Do you guys south of the border call it drywall? Or is it sheetrock?

Whatever.

That's not really the issue.

What was the issue was that this big truck...
That was a car-length behind me...
With me and everyone in front of me stopped, waiting for the lights to change...

Was still going about 80kph/50mph.

I think my eyes might have gotten really, really big. And I know... I mean I know my adrenaline kicked into overdrive.

I had no where to go.
I did the only thing I had even a chance to do, which was crank the steering wheel as hard as I could so that when I got creamed from behind, I might not (that's might not) die by being turned into a pancake, but would instead get catapulted into the cars beside me. An angled crash might just save my life... but it's still going to be bad.

I didn't think all this at the time. All I know is I reacted on instinct, to GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!

So I didn't die, obviously.

At the last second, the truck driver woke up.
He jinked to the left for a nano-second, then swerved to the right. He bounced up over the curb and onto the gravel shoulder and roared past me in a cloud of diesel fumes and road dust.

I sat there for a second, watching my life flash before my eyes and pondering what to do now.
Should I pull over and follow him?
What for. Why would I?
I figured he was probably just as shaken up as I was.
Maybe more. "Holy *expletive* I almost killed that guy!"

So I just drove home.

Wow! I'm thankful both of you are OK. It's the scariest thing being in a situation like that.

A few years ago, just after we got married, we were going to meet with our realtor to begin the process of buying our first house. We were on a road, that at the time, began as a two lane and then merged the right lane over until it became a one lane for the next mile or so. The merging lane begins just after a light, and of course you have those people who are rushing to get by and thinking they can cut everyone off before they merge. What they fail to notice is that this isn't a "yield to merge" lane, this is a, "this lane is going to end and you will have nowhere to go if you do not merge" lane. Basically a, you have no choice situation.

Anyway, so we are in the lane that is now merging to the left, and there are about 3 cars ahead of us. The first car in the lane begins to merge and gets cut off by one of those "in a hurry" folks, and slams on their brakes, in turn, the car behind them, slams on their breaks, and the SUV in front of us, slams on theirs. Now we see everything that has happened, and start to break, of course we are not stopping as quickly as we would like, so T-Man has to slam on the breaks, but we stop in time...In time to see a white SUV behind us, coming at a pretty decent 45 mph speed just as he slams into the back of the truck. I really don't think he even stepped on his breaks. This in turn sends us into the back of the SUV in front of us. As we watched the SUV approach us, T-Man was seriously debating jerking the truck up on the sidewalk to the right of us to get out of the way...It's a good thing he didn't. I can only imagine the damage that could have happened to the SUV in front of us, especially since they had kids in the backseat. At least with us being pushed into them, it wasn't as bad as taking the brunt of it all. Needless to say, we were late for our appointment with the realtor.

We haven't closed it yet, I think T-Man just posted on it yesterday, replying to others, so you still have time if you want to post, but no pressure, you don't have to. Just knowing you are reading it and enjoying it is all we care about.

Odd, how it's not you or your driving that gets you in trouble. It's the inattentive driver behind you.

It's a sad fact of life that there are some people out there who have licenses... that shouldn't.

I actually did that once. Two cars ahead of me suddenly braked. The car ahead of me braked. I started to brake... glanced in my mirror and instead pulled over to the side... and watched as a pick-up truck crashed into the car that previously was in front of me. He was braking, though, so it was just a fender bender... But if I hadn't moved, it would have been a lot worse for both of us.

Yeah, so this is the rest of the story. After work about two days before we met you for the trade off at the airport, I was like, "Kids, Mom needs to run a quick errand for a friend. We're just going to take a quick drive to Canada. You guys don't mind do you?" Upon which I burst into "Canada, My Canada" for approximately 48 hours or so. The song tends to loop in my head.

It was great catching a momentary flash of the Pkondz family as I donated Tinkerbuzz to you for a period of time. Hope she was well behaved for you.

Rest assured Pkondz, you can't tick me off. Okay, you could but I would still get you zebra domes because it's become a mission and there is a way to make it happen. I'm looking at you Pembina, ND!!!
