What do they do with all of the left over food?

I was reading a very extensive trip report with a lot of food/restaurant photos... I got to thinking, what do they do with all of the food that doesn't get eaten from the buffet lunch/breakfast? do they save the lettuce, huge cases of uneaten sandwiches and refrigerate them for the next day? Or does it get thrown out after every meal? Anyone know this? Seems like a lot of wasted food if it gets thrown out.

Last week on the Magic we were told that they grind it up and release it to feed the fishes. We did not pursue the topic further.

If you cruise, go to guest services and get tickets for the galley tour. They will share these little types of tidbits. It's very interesting to see the kitchens.

I would assume its like a restaurant. If the food is still good it's wrapped and stored and brought out again. Things like leftover prime rib become beef stew or soup. Anything that's old or no longer good is disposed of. Food from a buffet has to be treated differently. You can't re-serve it because you have no idea if its been touched.

Leftover lobster has been known to show up at the Castaway Cay adult barbeque on Serenity Beach.

I don't know about the leftover buffet food, but the food scrapped off plates is turned into fish food. I'm thinking they may do that with the buffet food just because of the chance for contamination.

They really do this. I've been told by head servers a few times. DD has allergies and they usually bring her 3 or 4 dinner options a night, which I've never been comfortable with since it's such a waste. Usually the HS come over and explain the process to me to make us feel comfortable with ordering, etc.
