Some politicians in the city of Seattle want to ban certain terms...

...because they think they may be considered offensive. One of these terms is, "brown-bag lunch". They are proposing its banishment because they think it may conjure up racist connotations.

The fact that the word, "brown" in "brown-bag lunch" refers to the bag and not a person doesn't even need to be implied; it's literally a part of the term.

What possesses some people to suggest nonsensical changes like this, to the point of actually wasting public money and time?

Id'd say that Seattle probably has too many politicians with too much time on their hands so maybe with the next election they should decrease the number of political spots there are available so that those who take them have to focus their efforts on important things.

That way there won't be so many people sitting around thinking of stupid stuff like this.

Maybe they need to dye the bags? But they'd have to choose the new color carefully so they wouldn't offend another ethnic group.

What kills me is trying to get rid of parts of words. Not that long ago I read something about someone trying to make "penmanship" into a more gender neutral term. Seriously? What's next - manufacture... manual.... ..... let's get rid of them all!

Especially since the "man" in penmanship has nothing to do with gender. All they'd need to do is consult a good dictionary to find that out. Likewise for manufacture and manual . Manipulate. Manifest. This is fun! I think I'll go get a non-gender-specific-icure at the spa.

Yes, but since people have also gotten upset over the phrase "black hole" or the word "niggardly", I would not be shocked if someone has already tried to replace manufacture, etc.
