I have 102 points that would need to be booked from this year (2013), My 2014 points are 300 from OKW and 225 from Beach Club. And I would still need 144 points to complete the reservation. Maybe I need to buy not sell points.
If you rent 771 points, at $11 a point (apparently a good price), that's $8400. How much would your cruise be in cash?

It depends on the renter. Some need hand holding (hours of emails, explanations, contracts), and some are super easy (literally, 10 texts, Paypal, done).

It really depends on the person that you're renting to. It also takes some time to "weed" through people just asking for availability vs someone who is willing to commit.

In other words, YMMV. But it's generally more work than people talk about and it's not as simple as "just renting."

We use a third party who handles all the contact with the renter. He emails the details and we make the reservation. He makes sure everything is on the up and up. I am not sure if I can mention his name on here, but you can google him. Never had a problem and he often contacts us because he has so many people wanted to rent points. It is really a good deal if you want to cruise, we can rent less than one years worth of points and use the cash for cruise.

kcx2njdisney, do you get cash or do you make the reservation yourself?

The cruise I want is $7276.10. Unfortunately I don't have 771 points, just 627 which would be $6897. I don't know if I have the nerve to do it. The 3rd party mentioned on the DISboard renter thread sounds good. Maybe I'll contact him. I'm still trying to figure this out but I'm really excited to cruise with my daughter and her family as they have never been interested in cruising. One thing I know is that we are going! One way or another.

Just bought into DVC and we had a question about cruise points. If we were short points, they suggested paying adults portion in points & child portion in cash as it was fairly cheaper than an adult. Just an FYI. Hope this helps. :-)

For our family of five, for our 7 night Western Caribbean Fantasy cruise, it was 542 points. Were you trying to book concierge?

No, but trying for one of the cruises out of San Juan. Only 4 Magic cruises doing this and she is going on a very different itinerary than has been done before. I need to call dvc and find out the cash price for the two children. One adult and two children cost $1836 so I need to find out what 3 adults on points and two children on cash costs, hopefully that would be affordable. I know it sounds like I'm thinking out loud here but I'm using the DISboards to help me think this through. I'll call dvc later today. I need to ask if I can borrow into 2015 for a cruise. Or maybe book the adults with the points I have and book the kids when I'm in my 2014 use year. That could work.

When did you go on this cruise and what type of stateroom did you have? I am going on the Dream today and it was about 400 for 3 of us for an inside stateroom. Seems like you got a good deal.

We paid for our kids with cash because we were short on points. You can also purchase points from people who are selling them. It's kind of like renting them. If I had known this we would have done that because we were only short 15 points.

Many dvc owners suggest selling your points for your use year. There are companies that purchase them or you can sell them personally. The company that I looked at was $10/point. However, we had already booked the cruise on points. I think we will be selling our points in the future and saving the money for a cruise.

Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

Can I ask another booking on points question?

I booked 3 of us on points, but reserved booking my youngest at all as we really weren't sure until recently we'd be bringing him at all. I plan on paying cash for him. As long as there is still room for him to be added (the cruise isn't until Dec.2014), will I also have to pay a $95 fee to add him? Do I need to go through member services or can I just call DCL directly?

You'll have to call MS. I'm pretty sure you'll be charged $95 as you are making a change to your reservation.

Yes, you will have to pay the $95 again. It sucks... and we've had to pay it before to add a person (which seems dumb).

You might want to ask whether you can pay for him first and whether it would cost you a $95 to DROP him. I don't know the answer to that, but it can't hurt to ask. Just make sure you drop him before the cancellation penalties begin.

Here's a tip--- I've booked 2 cabins before on the same cruise and paid the $95 only once. The CM told me that some people will allow this and some will not. I don't think it works unless you're booking for the same cruise in one transaction. In other words, you will get charged $95 twice if you book 2 separate cruises in one phone transaction, but the $95 fee only once if you book 2 cabins for the same cruise. At least that's what I was told. I have found DVC MS to be inconsistent.

We gat cash for our points and then just book through TA and get on board credits.. It would cost us at least 2 years worth of points, or more. At $10-$11 a point, it only takes about a years worth of points, or less. A much better value, we think.
