Using DVC points to book a cruise

I know using dvc points isn't considered a good use of points but if you don't have the cash? Does anyone know how booking onboard works? I think you have to call dvc within 3 days of your cruise ending. Is the points discount worth it? Are there any other perks--on board credit? Help!!!! And thanks.

We booked our first 5 cruises (2001-2004 & 2008) using our DVC points , for us it was an easy decision, cash out of pocket or points, we choose points. We wanted to book a 7 day cruise in 2010, but it looked like the points required had jumped up considerably. Since then our last 5 cruises have been cash. We use our points to do 2 or 3 days before a cruise & then 4 or 5 days after. We also hit the parks at least once a year w/o going on a cruise.

The process was pretty easy we just called DVC gave them the dates we wanted & they hooked us up with the Cruise folks & it was done.

For us, it's definitely not worth it to use points for the cruise. I rent out my points here on the boards and that pays for the cost of the cruise, spending money, and port adventures. If you're unsure about renting your points, check out the threads to see how others do it. It's at least worth considering!

We used our points last year to book the cruise as we had alot left and didnt need them for this year. I figure I am already paying for points, why pay out more cash! This year we will pay cash to take advantage of the special out of Galveston. We are also saving points for 2-3 trips next year!
We just called DVC, option for DCL, and they moved over the points with the $95 transfer fee.

To answer OPs questions. You can now call Member Services within 7 days of your cruise and make discounted points reservations. It does not include an onboard credit.

We have used points and cash to get cruises. Cash is a better deal from several perspectives, my major one is cancelation. Once you book on points those points are reservation points and not good for dvc resorts if you cancel. If you cancel with $$$, those $$$ are good anywhere.

If you have the points and are not into renting , go ahead and have a great time. A Disney cruise is a great experience that includes a nice hotel room, all the food you care to eat and good entertainment.

Just because it worked for me or worked this way in the past or is part of the great Dis lore is no reason it will work this way in the future. Depending on the CM you get, new interpretation of the rules, changes in rules, weather over the Himalayas, your results may be different.

Thanks. Good advice. Does anyone know how much of a discount you get using points right after getting off a cruise? I'd like it to be 10% but I doubt it.

Booked a cruise onboard a few months ago and converted it to DVC points. We got a 3% reduction in points. DVC said it can run from 0 to 10% depending on the cruise.

A good use of points is what YOU want to use them for.

My mom and I are doing a 14 day Panama Canal cruise and I used my points and she paid cash. My portion was less than 2 yrs worth of points so it was worth it to me not to have to fork out $2073. I've already paid for the points so if you look at it from my point of view I only paid $95 for my part of the cruise. If you look at it from the cost per point then I paid almost double what she did out of pocket . Just depends on what you want to use your points for.

Not into using pts for a cruise at all totally a badv deal. We are a family of 5 anditwould cost us close to 1100 to 1200 pts for a seven nt cruise.... I usually rent a gd portion of my points and use that cash to pay for the cruise.... Just my opinion

I just did the math and I am kicking myself in the butt for not renting my points out and paying cash.

We always rent our points to pay for cruise. Such a better deal financially.

Really wish I had known about this a while back; ugh, what an eye opener.

We do 3 night cruises and use points for a few reasons; it's only $95 cash, only 188 points for everything, and we are lucky enough to have plenty of points, but the biggest reason is because I don't want to deal with renting. If we were doing a longer cruise than the renting would be worth checking out. I didn't know about getting a discount. I need to check into that!

How easy is it to rent points? I see a lot listed but haven't been following so don't know if they sit there for a long time or not. They are saying 771 points for this 7 night cruise for 5, a Cat 4A.This is agony... I have 102 points that would need to be booked from this year (2013), My 2014 points are 300 from OKW and 225 from Beach Club. And I would still need 144 points to complete the reservation. Maybe I need to buy not sell points.
