If you see me sitting in a rocking chair, it's because I'm tying my running shoes.

I discovered 1/2 marathons and like the distance because I feel I can still have a life. I've completed around 30 and many are within 10 minutes of the same finish time and I want to get faster. I'm working on run/walk now, even though I'm probably faster just walking at this point. But I'm trying to build my running endurance. Who would have thought I would some day want to be a runner :-). I told my DH I know it's happening because when I see people out running, I wish I was out with them.
You will definitely get faster with the run/walk once you get the hang of it. I found 30 sec/30 sec intervals work best for me. After trying to continually increase the run intervals I found I was fastest (and most comfortable) at the short intervals. Who would have thought that would be the case?

My DH says I switched from walking to running as my response to becoming an empty nester. LOL.

I have to say, this thread is SO inspiring!! Congratulations to you - I know that you and your best friend are going to totally rock it out at the PHM!

I'm considering this myself, on a total whim! After reading all of the replies to your post, especially the ones about C25k not working for many, it has me believing I could do this, too. I tried C25k last year and had to quit after a few weeks because my knees were killing me. I'm very curious now about the Galloway method, and am thinking I might actually be able to run after all.

Thanks for posting, and best of luck to you!!

Isn't it the strangest feeling?! I've never wanted to run. Even when I was training for PHM, I never got into running. The past few weeks while training for W&D, I.cannot.wait. for run days and when I people out running, I'm so jealous!

I am on the registration page for the Tinkerbell half right now. I am registered for the DL 10k in August, but other tan a 5k a month ago, I've never been a runner. I'm thinking i should just stick with the 10k. Who am I kidding; I could never run a 1/2...right?

Well, you don't have to run the half. I've completed two runDisney half marathons and I did a combination of walking and jogging in both. You just have to maintain the 16 minute/mile pace for the entirety of the course and you will finish!

Finishing a half marathon is about equal parts mental and physical. If you can convince yourself you can do it and then follow through with the training, you should be able to do it!

Laura428, thank you for your kind works and encouragement! I say go for it! At first, I thought the PHM was totally out of reach (in fact, laughable) but I have never been more excited to start a challenging journey such as this. We have plenty of time to prepare and train. I say if the desire is there and your heart is in it, by all means, register and join me! I promise you this -- registering is half the battle.

We have a wonderful bunch of people on this thread and we'll ALL be here to cheer you both on! Kathymford, this is for you, too!

Thank you for posting this. This is exactly what Jen (my best friend) and I have in mind to do. We plan to use a combination of walking and jogging.

We just sat down and mapped out the entire month ahead for our training. It's nice to plan ahead and have our days locked in. Tomorrow we're meeting up for pedicures before we hit the Running Zone for our shoe fittings. Let the journey begin...

Thank you and you're welcome! I'm glad it is a help to you. I was fortunate to have a friend who was experienced with runDisney when I went the first time. The knowledge she shared with me took away a lot of anxiety about what to expect, so I have tried to pass on that knowledge and help others in a similar way.

You're welcome. I am glad you posted this thread. Despite having done a half before, It was over 3 years ago and I am benefitting from the encouragement as well!

As stated in my trip report, I didn't tell many people I had signed up for the half because I was so afraid of not finishing that I didn't want people to know I was attempting it!

My favorite pair of sneakers came from a store that has people trained to fit your sneakers. I need to do that again, but I need to find a local store. The one I went to last time is where my mom lives, several states away.

We went to a store just like that this morning. We stopped for pedicures first to kick off our girls' morning out. I purchased a pair of Brooks Glycerin 11's. I was pretty bummed that I had to order them in wide width but good things come to those who wait...I definitely don't want to be uncomfortable or create risk for injury. They'll be here in about a week. Yay!

One small victory for Team Kelly & Jen! This morning we met up at a beautiful park and hit the sidewalk around 08:20 for Day 1 of C25K. It was so peaceful and quiet with very little traffic.

I'm happy to report that our morning was a HUGE success! We took one small break to hydrate (definitely need to find a better water bottle solution) and after that, we conquered it. I may or may not have uttered a few choice words half-way through but my frustration quickly turned into all out determination as we pushed on. I'm very much looking forward to Tuesday's Day 2.

And Jen, if you're reading this... We've got this girl!

Aww, thank you Kyle! I'm very much looking forward to what's to come. Despite being so new to this, I really do think I'm going to fall in love with running in general. It's great! I appreciate the support of everyone on this thread and I wish you all nothing but the best, too.

Great job on day one!!

Remember when you run you should still be able to carry on a conversation. Not and easy one but you shouldn't be so winded that you can't talk.
