Carry-on luggage and child with special needs

We are going on our second cruise (3 nights on Dream in July) with our special needs DD8, and I am concerned about the embarkation day. We are WDW veterans, but fairly new to cruising (we only tried 2-night "cruise to nowhere" on Magic last year from NYC). Last year we were on the ship around 1:30 PM with our carry-on luggage, and staterooms were already available. This time we scheduled 11 AM port arrival time hoping to spend some time at the pools and ride Aquaduck before lines got too long for DD to handle. We also wanted to try an earlier arrival time because of the ability to get lunch earlier - DD takes about an hour to eat and I have to ask server to puree her food (that takes a long time with all the chaos on embarkation day!). I thought that our carry-on luggage could be left in the hallways next to our stateroom while we go to lunch, and just found out here that the entrance to the staterooms is roped off until 1:30 PM. I was wondering if there was any place on the ship where we could leave our bags while we try the pools. We have to carry ourselves one bag with 8-10 small oxygen tanks (cannot check that in as per Special Needs Department), portable oxygen concentrator (size of a carry-on), one carry-on with percussion vest (too fragile to check-in), one bag with all DD medications that we do not want to leave in a parked hot car for 3 days (some medications are liquids and not allowed in checked-in luggage), one small cooler with refrigerated medications, and a bag with emergency supplies/swimsuit/?change of clothes for dinner. I was thinking of loading some of that equipment onto a double stroller - will I be able to find a place somewhere on a pool deck to leave the stroller with the bags while we go to lunch? Special Needs Department was not helpful at all when I asked them about storing medical equipment - they basically said I should embark after 1:30 PM once staterooms are available. So I am trying to figure out if there are any other options for us besides late embarkation. I know that sailing concierge level would give us a possibility to store luggage, unfortunately, is not an option for us. Any advice is appreciated!

I don't think there really is. Could u leave it with another adult to watch til then? How about one of those luggage dollys and u could stack items, think smaller movers dolly.

Have you tried a shout-out for help from the people on your CruiseMeet thread? Most of the people on these boards are so friendly and helpful, I hope you could find someone who was willing to help keep an eye on all your carry-ons.

The only thing I know of is if you are in a Concierge room. I believe they have a luggage holding area onboard.

Once you get on board let the CM that welcomes you and and tells you about lunch know you need to take your child's medical equipment to your cabin and they will assist you. Our DD is in a wheelchair and we have gone to the room to drop off items before the rooms officially open. They just don't want you staying in the room will they are getting the rooms ready. They will probably request that just one person in your group take the items to the cabin.

They don't allow access to the staterooms and do not recommend leaving anything in them before the 1:30 time noted. The reason for this is the host is busy prepping multiple rooms and they are all propped open, so it would be very easy for someone to take whatever you leave in your room. You can ask at GS if they could keep the medical equipment for you, but don't be surprised if they say no as they don't want to be responsible for it. Special needs was giving you the information that is available. There isn't a storage area for anything after you board the ship. People keep their carry on luggage and strollers with them in the MDRs or at Cabana's until they can get to their room. I wouldn't leave it at the pool since you said the medication can't be left in the heat. You will see strollers parked outside the MDR. You can leave it there instead while you have lunch.

This doesn't help with your luggage, but for lunch on the first day would it work to bring jars of baby food, or those squeezable pouches, so that you don't have to wait for them to puree it for you? That might help you save a bit of time and stress/hassle if it's a viable option.

It must be hard to travel with so many medical supplies. I'm glad it doesn't hold you back and that you're able to make these special memories with your family.

I don't think you'll have time to do it all, so decide what is more important to you.

It's unlikely you'll be on the ship much before noon, even with an 11 PAT. With all this luggage, by the time you are in a dining room or Cabanas, noon at the earliest. If it takes you an hour to eat, then it's almost 1:30.

If you decide instead to park yourselves on the deck, just pick a spot and settle in. One person can run for food, or you can take turns swimming or riding the Aquaduck.

If it were me, I'd get on around noon, pick a spot and eat lunch without hurrying. There will be other times to swim.

I realize now that we will not likely have enough time to do both pool and lunch before staterooms are available. After reading all the posts I think we will try to get a travel dolly so we can stack up all carry-on luggage and just deal with one big piece instead of 6 smaller pieces of luggage. We can ask CM upon boarding if medical equipment could be left in the cabin, but if that is not possible we will just go to the dining room with our luggage (one piece on a dolly!) and have nice relaxing long lunch. It is still better than waiting until 1:30 PM to board. I will have few baby food jars just in case there is a problem with pureeing DD's food (though she is not a big fan of baby food at the age of 8!) But since we will have plenty of time, we can wait for a chef to help us with her food. By the time we are done eating it will likely be 1:30 PM already. So now I think I have a plan. Thank you again for all the great ideas!

I work for a Special Education Department and a few months ago someone posted information about a group that helps with Special Needs children and cruising. I showed it to a few people at work and they though it was worth looking into. I would suggest anyone with Special Needs people in their family take a look at their site. Many of the cruise lines work with this group and this group helps with Disney Cruising and Disney Parks. I have not called and talked to them but looking at their site they do lots of free things all the way to having someone on the cruise ship. Take a look http://www.autismontheseas.com/

I have a DS with special needs too. He really wanted to try the Aquaduck but I knew he couldn't manage a long wait either. I went to one of the attendants there and asked to talk to a supervisor. I explained the situation to him and was totally amazed, he arranged for DS to come in the morning 15 minutes before it officially opened so he could ride. It was one of the most thoughtful actions from a Disney staff, and we really appreciated it

We typically go straight to the pool. What I would do, is request the special meal from the dining room and explain you will be at the pool and down to get it (or over depending where you order). Then, go to the pool with your stuff in tow (set up at a table) and one of you go and get the meal while your DD is happily frolicking in the water. I would then feed her at the pool.

That was such a nice thing to do.

I have absolutely nothing to add to this thread, but I've enjoyed reading the helpful hints from others. Sometimes (as we all know) threads can take on a different direction/tone when people are honestly just asking for help, and it's so nice to see this thread do what the board was intended to do...help others.

To the OP, I hope your family enjoys the cruise!

I don't have much to add, but I wanted to suggest that it may be easier to eat your lunch that day in Enchanted Garden. The big waiting area (lobby) would allow you to leave your stuff out there and eat without worrying about it. Cabanas doesn't have much of a lobby. Plus, you will have a CM that brings you drinks, so this could help with getting food puréed faster. It's still a buffet, but it may be easier for you that day.
